Tea-hybrid peony rose variety Aquarell (Watercolor)

Rose Watercolor is an original variety with an attractive yellow-pink and crimson flower color. It is distinguished by lush flowering, lasting from June to September inclusive. The inflorescences are double, moderately large, and give a fruity aroma. Used to decorate the garden and make bouquets.

History of selection

Rose Aquarell belongs to the class of hybrid tea varieties. This means that it was obtained by crossing two varieties. And the process involved:

  • tea rose. It is distinguished by a pleasant aroma, the ability to bloom lushly and for a long time, and an elegant flower shape;
  • repairable. It blooms twice a season, has good winter hardiness and strong shoots covered with wood.

The variety was bred in 1999 by breeder Hans Jurden Evers, who worked for the German company Tantau (Rosen Tantau). The rose is a descendant of one of the famous varieties, Augusta Louise. The Tantau nursery itself, located northwest of Hamburg, was founded in 1906 by Matthias Tantau. Its products are popular among gardeners all over the world.

Almost all summer residents note that the seedlings of the Aquarelle rose and other varieties from the nursery fully correspond to the stated description and take root well in different regions. They are resistant to temperature changes and are characterized by early and long flowering.

The Watercolor variety has repeatedly won prestigious awards. In 2010, he received third place (bronze medal) at the Rose Competition in Rome and Madrid. This is a popular rose that fits well into any garden design.

Important! The first variety of tea roses was obtained in 1867 by researcher Guyot (France). Since then, breeders have done a lot of work and have developed several thousand interesting varieties.

Description of rose Watercolor and characteristics

Rose Aquarell is a perennial shrub. The height of the seedling is small: from 70 to 120 cm. Watercolor rose flowers are peony-shaped, regular rounded in shape. The color is cream, while the center is golden-peach, light brown, and the petals are pink-raspberry. The colors smoothly transition into each other: visually, such roses resemble a watercolor painting, which is how they got their name.

Type of rose flower Watercolor – densely double, lush. Number of petals – 60–70 pcs. The aroma is very rich, with pronounced sweetish, fruity notes. The inflorescences are quite large in size - reaching 8–12 cm in diameter.

The leaves are medium sized, oval in shape, rich green in color, with a glossy surface.

The foliage provides a pleasant background against which the blooming buds look especially attractive

Main characteristics of the rose variety Watercolor:

  • medium-sized bush – up to 120 cm;
  • not too spreading: width up to 50 cm;
  • double flower, arrangement: singly or in inflorescences (3–7 pieces);
  • fruity aroma, very strong;
  • repeated flowering: June – July and August – September;
  • rain resistance is weak;
  • immunity to black spot and powdery mildew is high;
  • winter hardiness zone: 6 (withstands frosts down to –23 °C).

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Rose Watercolor attracts attention thanks to its lush flowers of interesting colors. The variety has several advantages:

  • flowering twice per season;
  • rich, pleasant aroma;
  • large inflorescences of original color;
  • flowers do not fade in the sun and last for more than 7 days when cut;

  • bushes can be grown in boxes and in an indoor rose garden;
  • the plant tolerates daily temperature fluctuations normally;
  • good resistance to common diseases.

The variety is not without some disadvantages:

  • winter hardiness is low (up to -23 °C);
  • the crop cannot be grown in the Urals, Siberia and other regions with cold winters;
  • if the summer is cloudy, then flowering is noticeably worse;
  • during rains the buds practically do not open.

Reproduction methods

Tea rose Watercolor is easiest to propagate by cuttings. The procedure is simple, even a novice gardener can handle it, but it takes time. Cuttings begin to be harvested in mid-August. To do this, take green shoots that are approximately half covered with a woody layer. The instructions are:

  1. Trim the shoot of the Watercolor rose from above and below, leaving a cutting up to 10 cm long (it should have at least three buds). The upper cut is made straight, and the lower cut is made oblique (45 degrees).
  2. The bottom sheet is removed and the rest is cut in half.
  3. Then the Watercolor rose cutting is immersed in a solution of Epin, Zircon or Kornevin for several hours.
  4. After this, they are planted in open ground.
  5. Cover the cuttings with films or jars.
  6. Water periodically.
  7. For the winter, the Watercolor rose is sprinkled with foliage, making a layer of 7–10 cm.
  8. They harvest in the spring and continue to grow for another season (2 years in total).
  9. Next summer (August), the strengthened cuttings are transplanted to a permanent place.
Attention! Watercolor rose can also be grown from seeds, but this is a labor-intensive process.

Seeds are planted in peat tablets in early spring, constantly watered, and given additional light for at least 10 hours a day. In this case, the room temperature should be about +18–20 °C.

Growing and care

Tea varieties are most often placed on the site in early autumn. If this is done in mid-spring, young seedlings may suffer from return frosts. The optimal period is the second ten days of September, about a month before a strong cold snap. The soil is prepared in advance in the spring. The area is cleaned, dug up and fertilized with humus (3–5 kg per 1 m2) or complex mineral fertilizer. If the soil is clayey, add sawdust or sand in an amount of 1 kg per 2 m2.

The Watercolor variety is planted in an area with slight shade.

Suitable place to plant roses:

  1. Illuminated. It is better to create weak partial shade for 3-4 hours a day.
  2. Without stagnant moisture (low areas should be excluded).
  3. Well protected from the winds (near the house, fence).

The sequence of actions is standard. For the Watercolor rose, you need to dig several holes at intervals of at least 50 cm (this is an option for extremely dense, continuous planting). Their depth should be such that the earthen ball fits freely (taking into account the drainage layer of 3–5 cm).Pebbles and broken bricks are placed at the bottom, then a watercolor rose seedling is rooted and the surface layer is sprinkled with fertile soil. Water, mulch with humus, peat, sawdust. For the winter, be sure to mulch, cover with spruce branches or agrofibre.

When caring for the hybrid tea rose Watercolor, you should pay attention to several practical tips:

  1. Watering – only in the absence of rain: 2 times a week (in drought – three times). One bucket of warm water is poured under each bush (you need to pour it right to the root). During drought, the bush is sprinkled - it is better to spray in the late evening.
  2. Loosening – after heavy rains and waterings. The soil must remain loose; the formation of a dense layer is unacceptable.
  3. Weeding - as needed. To prevent weeds from growing, it is better to mulch the soil.
  4. Rose pruning Watercolor – annually in spring, summer and autumn. At the beginning of the season, weak branches are removed, and healthy shoots are cut to three buds in the first year, starting from the second season - to six buds. In the summer, faded inflorescences are removed as necessary - 3-4 leaves from the ground are left at the peduncle.
  5. Autumn pruning carried out in early October: remove all shoots, leaving stumps up to 10 cm, sprinkle the cuts with ash. The plant is spudded and covered with spruce branches or agrofibre.
  6. If the soil is fertilized before planting the Aquarelle rose, there is no need to apply additional fertilizing in the first season. Starting from the second year, fertilizers are applied regularly - 3-4 times per season according to the scheme.

Complex fertilizer every 2 weeks in alternation with organic matter (mullein, humus, droppings)

End of summer

A mixture of potassium salt and superphosphate 1:1

Lush flowering of the Watercolor rose can be ensured by regular fertilizing

Pests and diseases

The crop has good resistance to powdery mildew and black spot. But in the summer, pests often parasitize the bushes:

  • aphid;
  • leaf rollers;
  • caterpillars of various butterflies;
  • nematodes;
  • spider mites.

With abundant watering and rainy summers, rust and gray rot cannot be ruled out. Therefore, as a preventative measure for fungal infections, in May it is recommended to treat the bushes with any fungicide - for example, Maxim, Tattu, Profit, Topaz and others. If insects are detected, Aquarelle rose bushes can be sprayed with insecticides - “Decis”, “Biotlin”, “Fitoverm”, “Karate” and others.

Treatment with drugs is carried out in the late evening, choosing dry and windless weather

Application in landscape design

In the reviews and description of the Watercolor rose you can see photos of compositions and single plantings of this flower. The bush is small and moderately compact, so it is suitable for both large and mini-gardens. Looks great in mixborders, suitable for different styles: country, modern, English lawn, French landscape and others.

Several options for using Watercolor roses to decorate the garden:

  1. Single planting on the lawn.
  2. Accommodation next to the road.
  3. Plant in a well-lit place.

Conclusion

Rose Watercolor can enliven even the most modest garden. It is an attractive flower with a rich aroma. Pink petals go well with the yellow-orange center. The inflorescences are in harmony against the background of dark green glossy foliage. They appear throughout the summer and even in September. Therefore, the flower garden will remain attractive all season.

Reviews with photos about rose Watercolor

Lyubov, 56 years old, Rostov-on-Don
The Watercolor rose came to me by accident, but I didn’t regret it at all. In the first season, she produced one branch a meter high. I started growing it right away, however, I planted it in the spring, which was wrong, it should have been in September. The flowers smell very strongly, but fly away quickly. Perhaps it needs to be replanted in the shade of trees, but it is better to do this in 3 years - let it take root for now. Spectacular variety, suitable for bouquets.

Marina Vladimirovna, 45 years old, Voronezh
My Watercolor rose began to grow quickly. The height of the bush reaches a meter. What came out was a fluffy bush, even on all sides, so I haven’t done any trimming yet. After two years it already produces 30 buds. The aroma is simply wonderful. The rose stands well as a cut rose, so it can be grown for sale.
