Hybrid tea rose Black Prince (Black Prince): description of the variety, planting and care

Rose Black Prince belongs to the hybrid tea representatives of this flower species. The variety surprises with its exotic color, for which it is known among gardeners. Rose Black Prince is one of the “old” dark-colored crops.

History of selection

The variety was brought to Russia from Great Britain; it captivated the aristocrats of the 19th century, who sought to decorate their gardens with an unusual flower.

Black roses began to be created by breeders in Great Britain. When it was concluded that it was impossible to achieve a pure shade by combining different genes, they came up with a trick.

Taking a variety of white roses as a basis, they simply painted the petals with a dark red dye. Unopened buds appeared black.

Only the work of the British scientist William Paul, who produced a hybrid tea variety with dark petals in 1866, was successful.

Description of the Black Prince rose variety and characteristics

The maximum height of the bush is no more than 1.5 m. It spreads up to 90 cm in width. There are small numbers of large thorns on the shoots.The branches themselves are of medium foliage and well developed.

The leaf blades are ordinary, oval-elongated, with jagged edges, dark green in color.

From 1 to 3 buds appear on each shoot. They are shaped like a bowl. The flowers reach 10-14 cm in diameter. A bud has a total of 45 petals, some of which are densely located in the middle of the flower.

When unopened, the rose is almost black in color. As the bud blooms, it becomes noticeable that the petals have dark edges and a burgundy center. But under open sunlight, the buds quickly fade: their shade changes to dark crimson.

Depending on the sun, the color may appear either completely dark or burgundy.

The aroma of the Black Prince bush rose is rich: it is compared to wine.

The variety belongs to the group of repeat flowering varieties. The first buds appear at the end of June and fade after 3-4 weeks. Until the beginning of August, the rose rests, and then there is a second wave of flowering, lasting no more than a month. Sometimes single buds can bloom before autumn frosts.

Important! The frost resistance of the Black Prince rose reaches -23 °C.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage of the Black Prince variety is the decorativeness and unusual color of the petals.

Rose benefits:

  • strong, tart wine aroma;
  • abundant and long flowering;
  • versatility of using flowers (for decorating a site or cutting into a bouquet);
  • frost resistance;
  • flowers remain fresh for a long time when placed in a vase with water.

Disadvantages of the variety:

  • the brushes droop under the weight of the buds, since the peduncle is thin;
  • weak immune system.

If preventive measures are not taken against diseases and pests, the bush may die.The plant needs care and feeding to form large, beautiful buds.

Reproduction methods

The most common way to propagate a crop on your site is by cuttings from green shoots.

For the procedure in the summer, it is necessary to prepare green, strong, young, but ripe cuttings. The length of each of them should be 7-10 cm. The upper cut must be made straight, and the lower one at an angle, immediately below the bud.

All lower leaf blades should be removed, leaving 2-3 top sheets

The workpieces should be placed in the Heteroauxin solution for 48 hours, then planted in open ground, covered with film on top. Transplantation to a permanent place can be done only next year.

Relevant for Black Prince roses is propagation by dividing the bush. To do this, they dig it up and divide it so that the shoot has part of the rhizome.

The resulting bushes should be immediately transplanted to a permanent place

Roses that are more than 1.5 years old can be propagated by layering. To do this, they are separated from the mother bush in order to be planted later in a permanent place.

Growing and caring for the Black Prince rose

The rose is not a flower that requires no care. If planted incorrectly, the plant quickly dies or gets sick for a long time and does not bloom.

Seedlings should be purchased from trusted producers. They must be vaccinated. Healthy specimens have several buds on the shoots; they themselves are of uniform color, without mold or damage.

Seedlings with a closed root system take root more easily after transplanting into open ground

Important! It is preferable to plant the Black Prince rose in May, when the soil has warmed up and there is no risk of return frosts.

On the site, the seedling should be allocated a flat place protected from the winds.The soil should be fertile, well permeable to moisture, with a slightly acidic environment (pH 6-6.5). If the soil is not acidic enough, then peat or manure should be added to it. If the acidity is high, lime or ash is added to the soil.

Rose Black Prince prefers partial shade: the flower only needs sun in the morning and evening hours.

Landing algorithm:

  1. Dig a hole. Sizes should be selected taking into account the rhizome. The depth of the pit must be at least 60 cm.
  2. Place a drainage layer of available materials on its bottom: expanded clay or pebbles.
  3. Pour 20 cm thick soil over the drainage. First add 20 g of superphosphate and calcium sulfate to the soil.
  4. Transfer the seedling to the hole and cover the roots.
  5. Water the Black Prince rose generously and mulch the soil around it with sawdust or bark.

The neck should be buried no more than 3-5 cm, otherwise when watering it may rot, which will lead to the death of the rose.

The soil around the bush should be moistened regularly. During the hot season, the Black Prince rose needs to be watered every 2-3 days. During rainy periods, the soil should be moistened once a week.

To retain moisture, the ground around the bush needs to be loosened and mulched. Weeds must be removed.

Feeding application scheme:

  1. Before the formation of buds, pour complex fertilizer: dissolve 15 g of ammonium nitrate, 10 g of potassium salt and 25 g of superphosphate in 10 liters of water.
  2. At the end of flowering, dissolve 25 g of ammonium nitrate, 10 g of potassium salt and 15 g of superphosphate in 10 liters of water.

Rose Black Prince needs pruning twice per season. In October, a rejuvenating procedure is carried out, during which the shoots are shortened by 2-3 buds above the ground.

Sanitary pruning is carried out after the snow melts.Rotten, dried or damaged branches must be removed.

After autumn pruning, all the foliage around the bush is removed, and the Black Prince rose itself is covered with spruce branches.

Pests and diseases

Rose Black Prince does not have a strong immune system. If not properly cared for, it can become susceptible to various diseases. If preventive measures are not taken, the bush may suffer from pest activity.

Powdery mildew appears as a white coating covering the entire plant. The affected leaves gradually fall off, the buds lose their shape and color. Without treatment, the Black Prince rose bush will die.

2-3% Bordeaux mixture or 30% solution of iron sulfate is effective against powdery mildew.

If there is a lack of potassium during the rainy season, the rose may be affected by black spot. It appears as dark brown spots on the leaves. The affected plates gradually turn yellow and fall off.

All leaves need to be collected and burned, and the bush should be treated with a 1% solution of foundationazole or 1% Bordeaux mixture

Among the pests, aphids can often be found on the Black Prince rose. It appears in the spring and multiplies very quickly, simultaneously destroying leaf blades, young shoots and buds. If disinfestation is not carried out, the pest will overwinter in the above-ground part of the bush.

The bush should be treated three times, every 3 days with one of the insecticides: Aktara, Aktellik, Fufanon

Application in landscape design

Most gardeners prefer to plant the Black Prince rose in single compositions. The flower is self-sufficient and does not need framing.

The bush can be placed in flower beds and along garden paths. The beauty of the buds is emphasized by coniferous plants planted in the background.

When planting several varieties of flower crops, their spreading nature and height should be taken into account so that the flower bed looks neat

The Black Prince variety looks impressive in rose gardens along with flowers of light shades. Daylilies and delphinium can be planted as companions. With the right combination, peonies will effectively highlight the beauty of roses.

Contrast allows you to highlight dark roses, so it is recommended to place white or cream varieties of flowers next to the Black Prince

Conclusion

Rose Black Prince is one of the old and proven varieties. The plant is demanding on feeding and care, needs pruning and shelter. If you follow the rules of agricultural technology, the crop will delight the owner with abundant and long flowering, beautiful buds of an unusual color.

Reviews of the climbing rose Black Prince

Olga Ivanovna Solodovnikova, 27 years old, Novosibirsk Olga Ivanovna Solodovnikova, 27 years old, Novosibirsk
There are no absolutely black roses either in nature or in the gardens of breeders. But the Black Prince variety is really dark, with a noble burgundy color. Despite the bad weather, if treated in a timely manner, the rose does not get sick and tolerates the rainy seasons well. For the winter, spruce branches are not enough for shelter: I use fabric or acrylic. A plant damaged by frost recovers quickly, but blooms less profusely.

Rose Black Prince is considered to be the “Queen of the Garden” among flower lovers. Its buds have an amazing rich color. The petals seem velvety and have a pleasant aroma. These roses make stunning bouquets that do not fade for a long time. The bush itself does not require special care: it, like all roses, needs watering, fertilizing and pruning.If the variety is planted correctly, you can admire the buds almost all summer.
