Tomatoes are tasty, beautiful and healthy. The only problem is that we don’t consume them straight from the garden for long, and in canned form they are tasty, but, firstly, they lose a lot of useful substances, and secondly, their taste is very different from fresh. Not everyone has the opportunity to dry or freeze tomatoes - this is a troublesome task; tomatoes cannot simply be cut into slices and put in the sun or stuck in the freezer. Of course, you can go to the nearest supermarket - fresh tomatoes are sold there all year round, as if they had just been picked from the bush, but the prices are steep.
Lately, our attention has been drawn to tomatoes collected in tassels - they just beg to be put on the table: beautiful, one to one, smooth, shiny, almost without blemishes. These are specially bred hybrids that have excellent keeping quality. Today, the heroes of our article will be precisely them - cluster tomatoes for greenhouses. They are pleasant to serve at any time of the year, and you can also grow them yourself in a greenhouse in any region.Information about raceme hybrids will be especially relevant for those who grow tomatoes for sale - their price is always high, regardless of the season, and growing them is not much more difficult than other tomato varieties.
Features of raceme tomatoes
Today, breeders pay special attention to creating carpal hybrids. Previously, we grew tomatoes collected in bunches, but they only looked beautiful on a bush. Their ripening occurred unevenly, by the time the lower tomatoes turned red, the upper ones had long been picked - if we had left them, they would either have fallen to the ground or become soft and rotted. And how I would like to pick a beautiful bunch consisting entirely of red juicy fruits.
Modern cluster tomatoes differ:
- Harmful ripening of fruits. When the bottom one ripens, the top one still hangs on the hand and retains high taste and commercial characteristics. Tomatoes can stay on the bush for a month without overripening.
- Strong attachment of tomatoes. We pick them with a brush, move them, shake them. If they need to go on sale, we transport them, sometimes over long distances. They should stick well to the stalk.
- Uniformity in size – if the tomatoes are “different sizes”, they will look worse and cost accordingly less.
- No hand crease, which happens especially often in greenhouses due to the weight of the fruit - after the formation of a crease, the fruit simply will not fill;
- High resistance to fruit cracking.
In addition, tomatoes must be early ripening, high-yielding, resistant to diseases and pests, have good taste. An added bonus of growing these tomatoes is that you don't have to pick them often.
Advantages of greenhouse tomato cultivation
Typically, raceme tomatoes are grown in a greenhouse; only some varieties can be grown in the ground, and even those only in the south. Certainly, growing tomatoes in greenhouses has a number of disadvantages, but there are also advantages:
- It is easier to fight diseases and pests in a greenhouse; drugs act more effectively in closed ground conditions;
- You can exercise full control over the growing conditions. In a greenhouse we are less dependent on weather conditions;
- Good greenhouses usually allow for two crops;
- Tall indeterminate tomatoes are best grown in greenhouses - it is easier to tie them up there, and there is no danger that strong winds or an animal will break the fragile stem.
This is especially important for the northern regions, where even early-ripening, low-growing tomatoes do not always have time to ripen in open ground.
Tomato hybrids
Let's see what varieties of grape tomatoes are best for greenhouses. If in the south tomatoes bear fruit well in the ground, they are planted in a greenhouse exclusively for very early or late harvesting, but in the north the situation is different. Even though tomatoes are grown in greenhouses there, weather conditions still affect their growth. Low temperatures and cloudy weather do not have the best effect on the development of even greenhouse vegetables - not every greenhouse is equipped with central heating and uninterrupted electric lighting. In addition, any additional energy costs affect the cost of tomatoes. Here we need hybrids that can successfully grow and bear fruit even in conditions of low temperature and lack of lighting.
Often tomatoes suitable for planting in southern regions are not suitable for cold climates. But it would be wrong to think that southern varieties cannot be grown in the north, but by transferring northern varieties to the south, we will get a miracle harvest. We may not get it at all. Northern tomatoes simply will not survive the hot southern summer - they are simply not designed for it.
We will consider exclusively truss greenhouse hybrids, and we will pay more attention to those tomatoes that grow in cold climates.
