November winter pear

After the apple, the most beloved and widespread fruit in domestic gardens is the pear. Pear trees are unpretentious to climatic conditions, so they can be grown almost throughout Russia. Among the many modern varieties, it is difficult to choose something specific; usually gardeners prefer old, proven pears as their first experience. One of these varieties is November Winter pear, which has a number of advantages: winter hardiness, early fruiting and good resistance to external factors.

A detailed description of the November Winter pear variety, photos of fruits and trees, as well as reviews from gardeners about it can be found in this article. Here all the arguments in favor of the November variety will be given, and we will talk about how to plant this pear and how to care for it.

Characteristics of pear variety

The November Winter pear was selected by domestic scientists in the Far Eastern region. This variety is almost seventy years old and has not lost its popularity over the years.

Attention! The November pear has several names: some call it Moldova, other gardeners simply shorten the name to Winter.

The “parents” of the variety were Dekanka Zimnyaya and Ussuriyskaya pear, which indicates strong frost resistance and unpretentiousness of Noyabrskaya, allowing the variety to be grown even in the difficult conditions of Primorye and the Far East.

Detailed description:

  • the tree is tall, spreading, powerful;
  • crown shape is wide-pyramidal, round;
  • skeletal branches extend from the tree trunk almost at right angles;
  • the leaf blades are dense, the leaf shape is round or oval;
  • pears appear on two- or three-year-old branches;
  • The seedlings enter the fruiting phase 2-3 years after planting - the variety is early-bearing;
  • The yield of the November pear is high and regular - every year the tree pleases with an abundant amount of fruit (up to 60 kg from each tree);
  • the size of the fruits themselves is small - the average weight is only 80 grams, but in warmer climates, November Winter pears are much larger - up to 350 grams;
  • the shape of the fruit is ovoid, the pear is unequal-sided, ribbed, the peel may have grooves and stripes;
  • The color of ripe November Winter is yellowish-green; a crimson blush may be present on one side of the fruit;
  • dark dots are visible across the entire surface of the peel;
  • the pulp is white, quite dense, but juicy and oily;
  • The November variety has a good taste, sweet and sour, the fruit is very aromatic;
  • according to the ripening period, the November pear is classified as a late-autumn or early-winter variety - the harvest must be harvested in late autumn;
  • if the weather in the region does not allow keeping the crop on the tree, it can be harvested as early as September;
  • the November pear ripens perfectly in storage; for this it will need at least a month;
  • The fruits of this variety are stored very well - the fruits can remain in marketable condition until the beginning of February (the fruits are stored in the freezer until April-May);
  • the purpose of the fruit is universal: November is very good both fresh and in jams, compotes, and in the form of dried fruits; the fruits retain their integrity even after defrosting;
  • Noyabrskaya’s resistance to fungal diseases and scab is high, and the variety is also immune to bacterial blight;
  • frost resistance is good, the roots of the tree are considered especially resistant to cold;
  • It is not recommended to plant the variety in the lowlands - plains or hills are chosen for this pear.
Important! The November Winter pear needs pollinators, since the variety is self-sterile - the flowers of the tree are not able to pollinate from each other. It is better to choose Goverla varieties as pollinators, Williams Summer, Conference or Clapp's Favorite.

Thanks to this set of characteristics, the November pear can be grown in almost any area and in any climate. This variety is found throughout the European Union, in Ukraine, Belarus, in the southern, central and northern regions of Russia. Noyabrskaya Zimnaya is rightfully considered the standard variety.

Strengths and weaknesses of the variety

The above characteristics of the November Winter pear fully justify the wide popularity of this variety. The Winter Pear has many advantages, such as:

  • early fruiting – seedlings quickly enter the fruiting phase;
  • yield - the number of fruits is not record high, but quite high and, most importantly, stable from year to year;
  • tree shoots are resistant to sunburn, which protects the pear from damage in the spring;
  • strong immunity to fungal infections and scab allows you to safely grow fruit in regions with high humidity and low temperatures;
  • strong petioles hold the fruits very reliably - November pears do not fall off even during the monsoon rainy season;
  • the harvested crop can be stored for several months;
  • the fruits ripen well in storage, which allows you to preserve the harvest in difficult climates;
  • the good taste of pears allows us to classify the Noyabrsky Winter variety as a table variety;
  • The strongest “trump card” of the variety is its winter hardiness - the roots of the tree do not freeze out even in the northern regions of the country.
Important! The Noyabrsky Zimniy variety is perfect for growing for commercial purposes: dense pears tolerate transportation well, retain their presentation for a long time, and are distinguished by excellent taste and nutritional value.

The November pear variety is one of the best in Europe, but this variety also has its drawbacks. In general, reviews about the variety are positive, but some gardeners note the following:

  • not the strongest frost resistance of the crown and trunk - in humid and cold climates, trees are pressed to the ground and covered for the winter (in the Amur region, for example);
  • unequal fruit sizes;
  • not very attractive appearance of pears (heterogeneity of shape, ribbing of the peel and inclusions on the surface of the fruit);
  • the need for pollinators, without which the tree will not bear fruit at all.

Despite these disadvantages, the November Winter pear is grown everywhere and in large volumes. The most important quality in the description of this variety is considered to be unpretentiousness.

Growing rules

Growing November Winter is not at all difficult, so this variety is perfect even for novice gardeners. Particular attention should be paid to the self-sterility of this pear - pear trees with suitable flowering periods must necessarily grow on the site or near it.

Planting a tree

It is better to plant Noyabrskaya on the south side of the site, choosing a place located on a slight hill and protected from the north wind or draft.

Advice! It is necessary to plant the November pear in the northern regions in the spring so that the tree becomes stronger by the beginning of the winter cold. In other areas, it is recommended to plant pear trees in the fall.

The planting steps should be as follows:

  1. Six months before planting the seedling, you need to dig a hole. Its dimensions should be comparable to the root system of the tree; on average, it is 70x70 cm.
  2. The pit is filled with a mixture of soil, humus, superphosphate, wood ash and potassium fertilizer.
  3. A peg is placed in the center of the hole, and a seedling is subsequently tied to it.
  4. Place the seedling in the center and straighten its roots.
  5. Gradually sprinkle the root system of the seedling with soil, leaving 2-3 cm to the root collar.
  6. They tie the tree to a peg.
  7. Water and mulch the soil around the tree.
Attention! It is recommended to use peat, compost or humus as mulch, but sawdust or other organic matter is also suitable.

In the first summer after planting, the November pear needs to be watered 3-4 times. Each time before watering, the soil is loosened to improve soil aeration.

Pear tree care

The gardener’s primary task is to create conditions for the normal development of the pear tree and minimize the risk of disease. In order for the tree to quickly enter the fruiting phase, develop normally and delight with stable harvests, it needs the following care:

  1. The November pear loves slightly moist soil, so it is recommended to water it during periods of drought. Irrigation using the sprinkling method is especially favorable, when the tree receives moisture not only through the roots, but also through the leaves.
  2. While the pear is young, the area around it needs to be removed regularly. weeds. The grass will not cause any harm to mature trees, but it is still better to loosen the soil around the trunk.
  3. Pruning is especially important for young trees. In the first year after planting, the gardener must begin to form the crown. The central shoot of a one-year-old seedling is shortened by half, and skeletal branches are formed for two-year-old trees. If you shorten all shoots by 10-15 cm annually, you can achieve faster development of the tree and early fruiting. Old, dry and diseased shoots are cut out of mature pears of the Noyabrskaya Zimnyaya variety, and sanitary or rejuvenating spring pruning is regularly carried out (shown in the photo).
  4. November Winter seedlings may freeze if the winter is snowless and cold. To prevent this, the soil around the trunk is mulched with peat; the layer thickness should be about 30 cm. Adult trees, as a rule, do not need shelter.
  5. The Noyabrskaya Zimnaya variety needs to be fed with both organic matter and mineral components. In the fall, after harvesting, you can add humus, rotted manure, wood ash or compost. During the season, the soil is enriched with phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, saltpeter or urea.
  6. Noyabrskaya has immunity to fungal and bacterial infections, but insects may well harm both the tree itself and the harvest. To prevent this, the crown is sprayed with special means before flowering. The treatment is repeated after a couple of weeks.

The November pear can be harvested at the end of September.But, if the weather permits, it is better not to rush: the fruits stick well to the branches and do not spoil.

Review of the variety

Viktor Petrovich, 46 years old, Krasnodar
My grandfather planted the Noyabrskaya Winter pear variety in the garden, and until the end of his life he recognized only this variety. As for me, the fruits of Noyabrskaya are inconspicuous, at first very hard, but tasty and shelf-stable. The harvest is stored well; the pears lasted in our cellar until March-April. The variety is excellent in jams and compotes, and is suitable for drying. I believe that at least one tree like the November pear should grow in every garden. Even though its fruits are not the standard of beauty, they are tasty, juicy, healthy, and the pear itself produces a stable harvest every year.

Conclusion

November Winter Pear is an excellent option for those who live in difficult climatic conditions. This variety performs equally well in the South, North and center of the country. The more comfortable the growing conditions, the larger and sweeter the November Winter fruits will be.

Growing a pear tree is not at all difficult - the variety is unpretentious and does not require special attention.
