Rose Pink Floyd is a hybrid tea variety that is ideal for cutting, as it keeps the buds fresh for a long time. But if desired, this variety can be grown in the garden, and then it will delight you with its flowering every year. But in order for the shrub to fully develop and form buds, it must be planted correctly and provided with care that will meet the requirements of this variety.
History of selection
This variety is an achievement of the employees of the Dutch company Schreurs BV2, whose activities are related to the breeding of new plant species and their sale. Thanks to their efforts, 15 years ago a rose with a unique fuchsia shade of petals and a dense bud was obtained. It was based on Ecuadorian types of culture. The variety was so successful that it was named after the popular British rock band Pink Floyd.
And as a result, the developed variety fully met the expectations of gardeners. And in a short time the rose gained wide popularity, which it has not lost even now.
Description of the Pink Floyd rose variety and characteristics
The Pink Floyd rose is characterized by rather large bushes, as for a hybrid tea species. Their height reaches 1.25 m. This indicator can be controlled by periodic pruning. The density of the bush is average, the growth diameter is 60-70 cm. The shoots are erect, strong, easily withstand the load during the flowering period and do not need additional support. They have alternate leaves and no thorns at all, which is one of the advantages of this variety.
The plates consist of 5-7 separate segments attached to a common petiole. The length of the leaves of the Pink Floyd rose reaches 12-15 cm. The plates are dark green in color with a glossy surface, with slight serration along the edges.
The plant forms a well-developed root system. It consists of a skeletal tap root, which subsequently becomes lignified. It is he who is responsible for the frost resistance of the shrub and the annual growing season in the spring. Also, the underground part of the Pink Floyd rose includes many fibrous lateral processes. They suck moisture and nutrients from the soil and thus provide the above-ground part.
A special feature of the Pink Floy rose is its goblet-shaped dense buds with 5 sepals. They rise on a long shoot at least 50 cm high. Each of them consists of 40 dense petals, which creates the impression of a voluminous flower. When fully opened, the diameter of the buds reaches 10 cm. The outermost petals bend slightly outward.
The color of the Pink Floyd rose is a deep pink, usually called fuchsia. The flowering period begins in June and lasts until October.And in the southern regions, the shrub continues to form buds until frost occurs. Pink Floyd rose has a delicate sweetish aroma that does not disappear even during long-term transportation.
The center of Pink Floyd rose flowers is not visible even when they are fully opened. But it is periodically necessary to remove faded buds, since this variety is not capable of self-cleaning.
Rose Pink Floyd is characterized by an average level of frost resistance. It can withstand temperatures down to -20 degrees in winter. Therefore, in regions with more severe climatic conditions, shrubs require mandatory shelter.
One of the advantages of this variety is its increased resistance to rain and humidity, as well as fungal diseases - such as powdery mildew, black spot, which makes caring for the shrub much easier.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
Rose Pink Floyd has qualities that set it apart from other hybrid tea species. But this variety also has certain disadvantages. To get a complete picture of it, you need to familiarize yourself with them.
The main advantages of the Pink Floyd rose:
- large, dense bud;
- dense petals creating volume;
- long-term preservation of flower freshness;
- resistance to high humidity;
- persistent pleasant aroma;
- immunity to most common diseases;
- strong shoots that can easily withstand the load;
- bright rich shade of petals;
- excellent commercial quality;
- long flowering.
The disadvantages include:
- increased price for seedlings due to the high demand for the variety;
- the need for shelter for the winter;
- requires timely removal of faded buds to preserve decorativeness.
Reproduction methods
To obtain new young seedlings of this variety, the vegetative method is used. It can be used throughout the warm period. To do this, it is necessary to cut the mature shoot of the bush into cuttings of 10-15 cm. Each of them should have 2-3 internodes.
When planting, remove all leaves except the top ones to maintain sap flow. It is recommended to powder the lower cut with any root former. After this, bury the cuttings in a moist substrate until the first pair of leaves. And build a mini-greenhouse on top to maintain a favorable microclimate.
Young seedlings can only be transplanted to a permanent place the next year.
Growing and care
For the lush bloom of the Pink Floyd rose, good lighting is necessary. Therefore, the variety should be planted in open sunny areas, protected from cold gusts of wind. But at midday light shading is allowed.
The shrub needs periodic watering in the absence of rain for a long time. To do this, you need to use settled water at a temperature of +20 cm. Moisturizing should be done by wetting the soil up to 20 cm.
Also, throughout the season, you need to regularly remove weeds in the root circle and loosen the soil to ensure air access to the roots. And during a period of prolonged drought, a layer of mulch 3 cm thick should be laid at the base of Pink Floyd rose bushes. For this you can use straw, peat, humus.
Due to the long flowering of the Pink Floyd rose, the plant needs feeding throughout the season. In spring and early summer, when the bush is actively growing shoots, organic fertilizers and wood ash should be used. And during the formation of buds, phosphorus-potassium mineral mixtures should be used. They contribute to the intensity of the color of the petals, long-term flowering and increase the frost resistance of the shrub.
For the winter in the southern regions, Pink Floyd rose bushes should be covered with earth to cover the grafting site. To do this, the soil should be taken not near the bush, so as not to expose the roots. And in the central and northern regions, at the end of October, the shoots need to be shortened to a length of 20-25 cm. Then the bushes should be spudded and covered with spruce branches or agrofibre on top.
Pests and diseases
Rose Pink Floyd is highly resistant to fungal diseases. But this is not a reason to neglect preventive treatment of bushes, since if the growing conditions do not correspond, the plant’s immunity decreases. Therefore, the rose should be sprayed with copper-containing preparations 2-3 times per season.
Of the pests, aphids can cause damage to the Pink Floyd variety. It feeds on the juice of young leaves, shoots, and buds. This leads to their deformation. In the absence of control measures, the bush will not have full flowering. For destruction, Actellik should be used.
Application in landscape design
This ornamental shrub looks good in single and group plantings.As a tapeworm, it can be planted against a green lawn. And conifers and boxwood can highlight the beauty.
The Pink Floyd rose, with its unusual pink hue, pairs perfectly with other hybrid teas with pastel petals. Also in a flowerbed, it can be combined with low-growing crops in the foreground, which can successfully disguise its bare shoots below. For this you can use euonymus, hosts, alyssum, petunia, and lobelia.
Conclusion
Rose Pink Floyd is a showy variety that is ideal for creating bouquets, but it also looks good in the garden. Therefore, many gardeners prefer to grow it on their plots. Increased resistance to diseases also contributes to the growth of popularity, which is an important factor.
