Peony Pearl Placer is a species that has proven itself since the end of the last century and has not yet lost its popularity. It is recommended to grow it for beginning gardeners. It is unpretentious and quite frost-resistant.
How the variety appeared
The botanist V.F. Gorobets worked on the breeding of peony, and he also conducted tests during which he found out the optimal conditions for cultivation. The pearl placer was obtained in 1989 and only five years later (after all selection checks) it was included in the State Register of the Russian Federation.

The species belongs to herbaceous plants. It is characterized by medium dimensions and a neat shape. Pearl scattering rarely exceeds 85 cm in height, but in suitable conditions it can grow higher.
This variety represents a group of perennials and is capable of growing for 15 years without replanting. Viability is due to massive root growth, partly located in the ground, and partly on the surface.
During the growing season, buds are formed at the tops of peduncles, initially having miniature sizes, and within a week they rapidly increase in diameter. A special feature of the Pearl scattering peony is the appearance of lateral flowers on the peduncle.
The flowers are characterized by a regular geometric shape, terry filling and a pleasant light pink color. The petals are arranged in rows, which only increases the decorativeness of the plant. In the middle part there are yellowish stamens that exude a sweet vanilla aroma.
Timing and flowering period
You should not wait for budding in the first season after planting. When an adult seedling takes root, flowers appear the next year. As for growing seeds and cuttings, results should be expected much later.
The flowering of Pearl Placer peonies begins in the first half of summer and lasts for 30 days.
Advantages and disadvantages
As befits a decorative culture, the Pearl Placer has a dazzling appearance. This plant was awarded at the Moscow Flower Growers exhibition.
Pros:
- abundant flowering;
- undemanding;
- nice smell;
- suitable for breeding in different areas;
- used to create an accent in landscape compositions;
- the flowers do not fall off for a long time.
Minuses:
- under intense lighting, the peony may lose its natural color.
Subtleties of landing
Planting is recommended at the beginning of the growing season or after its completion. Special attention is paid to the location in the dacha - it should be sunny, but with moderate daylight hours.It is optimal if the flower enjoys the sun in the morning, and weak shade in the late afternoon.
They use light soil that is highly permeable to water and oxygen. They can use fertile loam. To plant the Pearl Placer peony, you will need a hole. They dig it up, focusing on the size of the seedling. On average, a hole measuring 60 x 60 cm is formed. After this, drainage is placed, a third of the depth is filled with fertilizer: ash, compost, slaked lime, rotted manure or other organic additive.
Care Tips
Peonies are not plants that need constant care. Pearl scattering is no exception. However, you should not forget about standard agricultural activities such as weeding, fertilizing, pruning and watering.
Placer pearls are perfectly adapted to drought and do not need regular moistening. No additional irrigation is required. Once a week, the bushes are watered with two buckets of warm liquid.
You can apply no more than four dressings per season. They are most needed during the formation of buds, as well as in the fall, in order to quickly adapt to the cold. Placer pearls respond well to factory mixtures designed specifically for peonies.
Wintering
The species has excellent winter hardiness, which makes it easier to grow in northern regions. But even immunity to negative temperatures down to -30 degrees does not make peonies 100% protected from frost. Therefore, gardeners recommend first cutting off the Pearl Placer, then hilling and mulching.And after that, cover with non-woven material.
Reproduction methods
Placer pearls are usually propagated using three methods:
- seeds;
- division;
- cuttings.
In the first case, planting material is collected after flowering - in July-August. The main disadvantage when growing seeds is the possible risk of loss of species characteristics when the daughter plant differs from the parent.
Two days before planting, the seeds are placed in a weak concentration of potassium permanganate solution. Peonies are planted shallowly in a container so that the raw material is easy to hatch.
The pearl scattering is kept under film at room temperature +24 degrees. The shelter is removed daily for ventilation. With the appearance of root shoots, the film is finally removed, and the seedlings are planted: in separate containers or directly into the ground, if the weather permits. Until the leaves appear, maintain a temperature of +10 degrees.
The second method is faster. In addition, division allows you to obtain an identical peony, since the specific characteristics remain. Two periods are suitable for reproduction:
- spring - after the soil warms up;
- autumn - before the cold weather arrives.
It is enough to dig up the bush, dry the roots so that it is easier to cut them, and separate the part. Then this part is transplanted, and the mother bush is placed in its original place.
Cuttings are popular among gardeners of “all stripes.” Peonies can also be propagated in this way, however, the first budding will occur only after a few years. In the spring, a healthy shoot with several leaves is chosen at the Pearl Placer.The upper cut is treated with varnish, the lower cut is immersed in Kornevin.
Disease and pest control
The culture is not susceptible to most diseases and, with proper care, rarely gets sick. Preventive measures should be followed. These include: weeding, moderate watering, fertilizing and application of the fungicide Fitosporin.
Application in landscape design
Peonies decorate Russian front gardens, parks, squares, dachas, and flower beds. Placer pearls are grown as a tapeworm or in a group with related crops. Not only landscape designers have noticed this species; peonies are in great demand in floristry - thanks to the erect stems and powerful flowers, the plant lasts a long time when cut.
Conclusion
Peony Pearl Placer is a hardy plant that can be grown in almost any conditions. The culture has only one weakness - intense light. In sunny meadows, the buds fade over time, which affects the decorative effect.
