The plant is highly resistant to adverse weather conditions

Description of the phlox variety Tatyana

The variety "Tatyana" is a flowering ornamental perennial plant that belongs to the Sinyukha family. The frost-resistant variety “Tatyana” tolerates winter well in mid-latitudes, where there are sometimes particularly cold winters. At the same time, the thicker the layer of snow, the easier the bushes will survive the winter. Light-loving phlox prefers open and illuminated areas, however, it also grows well in the shade. But in this case, it is difficult to achieve abundant flowering.

The shrub grows no more than 1 meter in height; phloxes are quite compact plants for garden plots. Due to the erect shoots, they do not spread much to the sides. On the shoots there are elongated oval leaves of a dark green color located in pairs.

Features of flowering

The variety "Tatyana" belongs to the paniculate type of phlox and begins to bloom in mid-summer, usually in July. Flowering continues until the first days of September. By this moment, all the buds have faded and in their place fruits are formed in the form of boxes, inside of which the seeds ripen.

Large inflorescences are spherical in shape and are located at the very top of the shoots. Each inflorescence contains from 5 to 10 flowers with a diameter of 5 centimeters. Each bud of the Tatyana variety has 5 soft pink petals, which have only one row.

Phlox prefers partial shade and grows well under the canopy of trees.

Application in design

Paniculate phloxes are popular not only in Russia, but throughout the world. They are used to decorate public park flower beds. In the UK, owners of private houses like to decorate their gardens with these flowers, and in the Netherlands they are planted together with gladioli.

Flowering plants with which “Tatyana” will look beautiful:

  • astilbe;
  • marigold;
  • verbena;
  • heleniums;
  • buzulniki;
  • monards.
Advice! It is recommended to choose those varieties of the above flowers that have thin, elongated stems.

Among the decorative deciduous plants that are suitable for “neighborhood” with paniculata “Tatyana” we can highlight:

  • loosestrife;
  • oregano;
  • bergenia;
  • white forest tobacco;
  • feverweed;
  • barnyard grass (perennial);
  • Mexican mint.

You should not plant paniculate phlox next to massive trees; they look better against the background of spreading shrubs with a lush crown. The only trees that look very beautiful with “Tatyana” are conifers; the darker their needles, the more decorative and laconic the garden looks.

Reproduction methods

Paniculate phlox is propagated in three ways:

  • dividing the bush;
  • seeds;
  • layering.

The most frequently used method in home floriculture is the first method, the other two are used very rarely.

To propagate the “Tatyana” bush by dividing the mother’s adult bush, it is necessary to dig it up without damaging the root system. Using a sharp and thin knife, separate the side parts of the bush along with the rhizome. The cut areas must be treated with a solution of potassium permanganate or sprinkled with activated carbon.

Attention! Each separated part must have at least 3 healthy stems.

It is easy to propagate phlox by layering, but the procedure can take a long time. The side shoots are covered with earth and watered abundantly; now you need to wait for them to take root. Only when they give stable roots can they be separated from the main bush and transplanted to another place.

In the fall, paniculate phlox seeds are collected and in early spring they are planted in a box with a nutritious, moistened substrate. Cover the top with foil and place it on a lighted windowsill. When the first leaves appear, the seedlings are planted in separate pots.

Landing rules

Paniculata "Tatyana" loves a lot of light, so the area should be well lit. However, in order not to burn the leaf blades of the bush in summer, during especially hot and dry periods you can choose a slightly shaded place. Moreover, paniculate phlox tolerates shade very well.

The great advantage of the plant is that planting can be done both in spring and autumn. Before planting seedlings in open ground, they must be carefully examined for mechanical damage and diseases.

The plant is not particularly demanding on soil quality, but it is better to plant it on loamy soil.

Stages of planting paniculate phlox “Tatyana”:

  1. Dig up the area and add humus to it.
  2. Dig holes with a diameter and depth of 30 centimeters.
  3. Prepare the substrate by mixing fertile soil, compost and river sand.
  4. Pour a small layer of substrate into the holes and place the seedlings in them.
  5. Fill the area with the remaining earthen mixture, do not compact it too much.
  6. Pour over soft, slightly warm water.

“Tatyana” planted in the right place can grow there without transplantation for almost 10 years, however, it is better to change the location of the phloxes every 5 years.

Aftercare

The paniculate variety is especially demanding when it comes to watering; it must be done frequently and abundantly. It is recommended to carry out the watering procedure in the morning before sunrise at the zenith or in the evening, closer to sunset. For every 1 sq. per meter you need to pour out about 2 buckets of high-quality water, without various impurities.

Phlox "Tatyana" is a moisture-loving flower; its watering should be plentiful and regular.

When the water is absorbed into the soil, you need to loosen it to a depth of 3-5 centimeters. This procedure will not allow moisture to stagnate in the soil, which will protect against rot, fungi and mold.

Another way to keep water in the ground and not harm the phlox is to mulch it. The mulch can be peat, sawdust or dry leaves. Small pebbles look good on flower beds and flowerbeds.

Panicle phlox “Tatyana” is fed once every 3 weeks. For this purpose, mineral fertilizers are used, which are best purchased ready-made in complex form in special stores. In spring, nitrogen-containing fertilizers are needed to promote the growth of green mass.With the beginning of flowering, the bush is fed with phosphorus-potassium preparations.

Preparing for winter

The latest autumn feeding should include both mineral fertilizers and organic matter: rotted manure, humus, compost. It is advisable to apply it with liquid fertilizers so that all the nutrients are well saturated into the soil closer to the root system.

During the active season, paniculate phlox “Tatyana” does not need pinching or pruning. However, before leaving for the winter, phloxes need to be trimmed. Remove all shoots, leaving 3 centimeters of stems above the ground level. The remaining sections, together with the soil, are carefully treated with fungicides or copper sulfate.

In the southern and some central regions, this variety does not need to be covered for the winter. It is enough to simply completely cover the bush with mulch and sprinkle soil on top. In northern latitudes, the plant is covered with spruce branches or spunbond.

Pests and diseases

Panicle phlox "Tatyana" is distinguished by its high resistance to pests and diseases. Rarely, the bush is affected by mealybugs, causing the appearance of powdery mildew. First, white round insects settle on the leaves and secrete a whitish liquid. The stems and leaf blades begin to become covered with bloom, soon they turn black and fall off.

Another disease that can harm paniculate phlox is variegation. It affects the flowers of the bush, they begin to change color to a brown tint.

The rust disease has similar characteristics, but affects the leaf blades of phlox "Tatyana". Locally they begin to dry out.

Nematodes not only destroy the bush by feeding on its succulent parts, but also transmit infections. The leaves turn yellow, begin to curl and stop growing.If you do not treat the bush, the foliage begins to fall.

Leaf rust greatly spoils the decorative appearance of the plant and stops its flowering

Conclusion

Panicle phlox Tatyana is able to give garden plots a pleasing appearance to the eye thanks to its soft crimson flowers. Despite its fragile appearance, the variety is not difficult to care for and can withstand severe frosts. And to diversify your site and dilute it with bright colors, you can plant different varieties of paniculate phlox.

I purchased the paniculate variety of phlox “Tatyana” for my grandmother, based on the picture on the package. I thought that such a delicate flower would not take root in our region, but it turned out to be very tenacious.
