English climbing rose floribunda Midsummer (Midsummer)

Midsummer rose is a compact perennial plant with abundant flowering on last year's stems and shoots of the current season. The crop is frost-resistant, light-loving, its varietal qualities are fully developed in a temperate climate; in the south it is grown in partial shade.

History of selection

The floribunda group includes numerous varieties created by hybridizing rose polyanthus, muscat and hybrid tea. All representatives are distinguished by abundant flowering, frost resistance and high resistance to infections. Rose Midsummer belongs to the floribunda group, the variety was created in 2007 at the Tantau nursery in Germany. The variety is compact and does not grow more than 1 m. English breeder David Austin has moved beyond the standard Midsummer size and created a climbing variety. The hybrid retained all external and biological features, but became significantly taller.

Description of the climbing rose floribunda Midsummer and characteristics

The branchy English Midsummer rose inherited the abundant flowering of large flowers from the floribunda variety, and strong long stems from the hybrid tea representative.

What does the Midsummer variety look like:

  1. It grows in the form of a compact bush with a diameter of about 60 cm. The stems are numerous, their length ranges from 1.5 to 1.8 m, this is a medium-sized representative of the species. The shoots are woody, branched, intensely leafy, and flexible. The stems are brown with a brown tint.
  2. The first buds open in the second half of June on the shoots of the previous year, the cycle lasts until August. Then two weeks pass and the second wave of budding begins on the stems of the current season. Flowers appear on the bushes before frost.
  3. Leaves abundantly cover the rose bush. They are arranged in groups of 3. on petioles of medium length. The shape of the leaf blades is round, oblong, pointed at the top. The leaves are leathery, dark green, the surface has a glossy sheen, the edges are smooth.
  4. The buds are collected in simple paniculate inflorescences of 4–9 pieces; single ones are found, but rarely. Floribunda rose Midsummer double type, orange-red. The central part of the flower can be light burgundy with a yellow tint, the outer petals are darker, and the lower part is orange.
  5. The root system is deepened to 50 cm.
Important! Midsummer's thorniness is weak, the thorns are sparse, non-thorny, short, and appear as rudiments at the end of the shoots.

The name Midsummer (midsummer) was given to the rose during its main flowering period.

Climbing floribunda has good frost resistance and can withstand temperatures as low as -27 0C. In regions with harsher winters, shelter is required.If the shoots are damaged, the plant quickly recovers at the beginning of the season; if the roots freeze, it gets sick and lags behind in development.

The Midsummer floribunda variety has high drought resistance and reacts more calmly to the lack of moisture than to waterlogged soils. In regions with a temperate climate, the rose is placed in an open place; in the south, periodic shading is recommended so that at noon the Midsummer floribunda is not under the bright sun. If placed incorrectly, flowers lose turgor, droop and wither, and burns may occur on the leaves.

Midsummer floribunda roses do not tolerate exposure to north winds. An area for cultivation is allocated, protected from drafts, near the wall of a building or a solid fence. You can place the rose near trees, but they should not create permanent shadow.

The soil must be enriched with minerals and organic matter. It must be well aerated. A prerequisite for growth is drainage. Do not plant floribunda roses in wetlands or ravines where rainwater accumulates.

Important! The composition of the soil must be neutral; if the reaction on the site does not meet the biological requirements of Midsummer, it is corrected.

The growth rate of the floribunda rose is slow. The bush grows in one place without transplantation for more than 12 years.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

A feature of the Midsummer variety is that it forms climbing stems only in the central part. Their number is no more than 1/3 of the total number of shoots. The lateral branches do not exceed 1 m, so the lower part is denser in terms of budding. Climbing floribunda is popular among gardeners due to the following advantages:

  • unusual colors of chameleon rose petals.In cloudy weather, red color predominates, in sunny weather - orange;
  • a perennial plant blooms without replanting for many years;
  • compact bush;
  • the flowering period is long due to the repeated cycle;
  • good indicator of frost resistance;
  • floribunda rose is undemanding when it comes to watering;
  • standard agricultural technology for the crop.

The disadvantages of the variety include poor tolerance to direct sunlight and waterlogging of the soil. During prolonged rains, the flowers become damp and lose their decorative effect. Constant feeding is required.

Reproduction methods

The climbing variety Midsummer is not propagated by seeds. This rose is a hybrid representative of the floribunda group, and therefore does not produce material that retains varietal characteristics. It is possible to grow seedlings from seeds, but they will not remotely resemble the parent plant.

Only with vegetative propagation can the appearance of the Midsummer rose be preserved, corresponding to the varietal characteristics.

Cuttings are obtained from green and woody stems, their rooting is the same

Material is cut from last year's shoots after the completion of the first wave of flowering, and from young shoots - in the fall.

To obtain layering in the spring, the outermost stem in the bush is bent to the ground, fixed and covered with soil. For the winter, the cuttings are insulated. In the spring (after germination of the sprouts) they are cut and planted.

Important! The rose bush can be divided, but the adult Midsummer floribunda does not respond well to transplantation, and the plant's survival rate is poor.

Growing and care

Roses are planted on the site in spring or autumn; work at the end of the season is more preferable. The plant enters a dormant phase and adapts more easily to a new location. The pit is drained and the bottom is filled with fertile substrate with the addition of complex mineral fertilizers.Place the rose so that the grafting site is deepened by 5–8 cm.

Subsequent agricultural technology for Midsummer floribunda consists of the following activities:

  1. To ensure that a sufficient amount of oxygen reaches the root, the soil is loosened as it compacts.
  2. Be sure to remove weeds.
  3. When watering, rainfall is taken into account. The culture needs 30 liters of water per week.
  4. Floribunda Midsummer loses its decorative properties if it does not have enough nutrition. Rose responds well to organic matter. Fertilizer is applied in the spring, during budding, flowering and before wintering. From mineral means nitrogen is used at the beginning of the season. In mid-summer, potassium and phosphate are added.

In autumn, the rose is removed from its support, the old stems are cut off, and only the shoots of the current year are left. Carry out water-recharging irrigation and cover with mulch. In regions with risky farming, arcs are installed near the rose and covered with insulating material.

Pests and diseases

The main threats to Midsummer floribunda are black spot and powdery mildew. Fitosporin is effective in the fight against fungal infections.

Of the pests on the Midsummer variety, the following are parasitized:

  1. Aphid. When it is detected, sections of the crown with the main accumulation of pests are cut off. The entire bush is treated with Confidor.
  2. Spider mite. You can rarely find it on a floribunda rose; they get rid of it with Agravertine.
  3. Rose leaf roller. During the season of active spread of the pest, it can cause the death of the plant. “Iskra” is used for it.

For preventive purposes in the spring, when the leaves bloom, the Midsummer rose is treated with colloidal sulfur

Application in landscape design

It is recommended to place the climbing floribunda Midsummer near a support.These can be a variety of structures in the form of an arch, column, pyramid, trellis. The fixing element can be a fence or a building wall with a mesh attached to it. Roses are used for vertical gardening:

  • decorate gazebos;
  • delimit garden zones by growing near wide trellises;
  • decorate fences and residential buildings;
  • create arches.

An unpretentious plant with bright colors can decorate any corner of the site:

  1. Roses and heather are combined not only in color, but also in biological requirements.
  2. A composition created in contrasting colors will help decorate the arched structure.
  3. The rose can be used to trim a hedge.
  4. Wooden trellises with climbing roses will allow you to divide the area into zones.
  5. Floribunda Midsummer can be used to decorate the walls of a building.

Conclusion

Rose Midsummer is a representative of the large-flowered floribunda group. Due to its high frost resistance, the climbing variety is grown in the Central and Middle zones, the Urals, and Siberia. Drought resistance allows the variety to be cultivated in the subtropical zone. The plant is used for vertical gardening in gardens and personal plots.

Reviews with photos about the climbing rose floribunda Midsummer

Zoya Romashkina, 38 years old, Nizhny Novgorod
The climbing variety Midsummer has been on my property for five years. The bush is planted near the fence. Nearby I placed a pink seedling. The two varieties go well together in color.

Raisa Petrova, 40 years old, Pyatigorsk
I purchased a Midsummer rose with a bright red-orange color, as it was in the picture for the seedling. I complied with all the requirements of agricultural technology, the rose bloomed in the fourth year, but not as in the picture. An ordinary medium terry variety.There is very little orange coloring. In the photo I took the most successful inflorescence, but even here there were spoiled flowers.

The flowers quickly wither and droop, I don’t have time to cut them, the petals are prone to fading
