Growing cucumbers has a lot of features, observing which you can get a high-quality and abundant harvest. Trellis for cucumbers in a greenhouse is one of them.
Conveniences and advantages of designs
There are also 2 more common methods of growing cucumbers:
- spread out - the natural and easiest option for cultivating vegetables;
- in a bag or barrel - original and at the same time not yet widely used.
Spread cultivation requires a large area for normal plant development. In addition, the risk of fungal disease is increased and the fruits from watering or rain, as a rule, become dirty, taking on a not very appetizing appearance. When growing cucumbers in a bag (or barrel), the area of the bed is significantly reduced, the whole structure looks very aesthetically pleasing, however? You will have to water the plant much more often than usual.
Thus, the most effective and convenient way to grow cucumbers is a trellis cultivation system. When arranging trellises both in the greenhouse and in the fresh air, the garden space is used much more efficiently. In addition, harvesting from them is much easier and the cucumbers grow clean and even. Green fruits are most protected from fungal diseases and rot.The only drawback of trellises is that they require independent installation and construction.
Types of trellises for cucumbers
There are two types of trellises:
- rigid (structures made of metal, wood or plastic), with large cells;
- mesh (similar in appearance to fishing nets that can be rolled into a ball).
In the first case, the trellises have a solid frame made of metal or wood, the structure reminiscent of a building mesh. In general, it consists of several pillars with crossbars-veins to mark the upper and lower boundaries.
In the second case, the trellis is a soft, elastic and strong special mesh, which can be purchased at a garden store or woven by hand. This design does not have any special limitations in terms of strength, since attaching the mesh to the frame is not difficult, because it can go around any obstacles. You can make trellises for cucumbers in a greenhouse yourself from an average of 5-meter mesh, that is, almost flush along the entire length of a standard greenhouse.
Work order and necessary tools
In order to make trellises yourself, you need to purchase the following set of tools:
- screwdriver, hammer, sledgehammer, knife and pliers;
- embedded wooden blocks, wooden beams with a cross-section of 3x5 cm, 2 m long (or metal or asbestos pipes);
- screws, screws and nails, mesh or twine.
Once everything you need has been prepared, you can safely proceed to the following step-by-step list of work:
- Supports are installed on the end sides of the bed (beams with a cross section of 30x50 mm).
- Intermediate supports are mounted at a distance of 2.5-3 m from each other (for example, for a 5-meter bed you will need only 3 of them).
- Using a screwdriver, a metal profile is overlapped onto the intermediate supports using small embedded blocks.
- Opposite each plant, nails are driven into a wooden board and shaped like a hook (if the bed has wooden borders). If the ridge is without restrictions, then pegs are fixed in the ground. The end of the twine or mesh is fixed at one end on the support and then, through hooks (pegs) along the crossbar, it is pulled over the cucumbers in the shape of the letter L, that is, it is carried along the entire length of the crossbar to the other end of the second support.
Since cucumbers tend to sprout tendrils and stretch upward, clinging to nearby vertical supports, here they will rise to the mesh (twine) and thereby create a beautiful garden shape that is convenient for harvesting.
The construction of a trellis structure is a creative process. In this regard, each summer resident has an individual look. Devices for cucumbers in a greenhouse are also no exception.
Any vertical support specially mounted for these purposes will help you grow a bountiful harvest with ease of collecting and caring for garden plants. The main thing is to do it conscientiously and competently, and the rest is up to the sun and the sprout itself.
