Grapes Sensation

Grapes Sensation lives up to its name in all respects. It surprises and shocks even experienced winegrowers with the size of the fruit, yield, taste and beauty of full-bodied bunches. We could not ignore such a miracle, we learned everything about it and are in a hurry to share with our readers its truly sensational qualities and properties. The hybrid grape variety Sensatsiya was bred by Rostov breeder Kapelyushny in 2016 by crossing two varieties Talisman and Rizamat. The result of the selection was stunning.

Hybrid Sensation

The photo above shows the parent varieties, and below the Sensation grapes are the fruit of selection of these varieties.

Hybrid characteristics

Sensation grapes, like all hybrids, have the genes of their parents, but they also differ in their own characteristics acquired during selection. The main botanical derivatives are identical for the entire Grape family, to which Sensation belongs. In a detailed description of varietal characteristics, we will note their general properties, as well as the distinctive qualities of the Sensation grape variety.

Description

Grape roots - have the ability to penetrate the soil to a depth of 40 cm to 10 meters, this depends on the structure of the earth and the depth of groundwater, the closer the underground sources of moisture, the easier it is for the roots of the grapes to reach this source, and there is no need to expand the root system by great depth. The same thing happens with the branching of the root system to the sides from the main stem; if the water is close, the roots do not grow very much. When propagating Sensation grapes by cuttings, the top of the root, due to which development occurs in depth, is pinched so that lateral branches grow faster.

Grape shoots (grapevine) - under natural favorable conditions, the vine can reach an enormous length of up to 40 meters, but winegrowers regulate such growth by pruning vines for ease of cultivation. The growth of the vine in more severe climatic conditions reaches only 2-3 meters. Young shoots of Sensation grapes are yellow or reddish in color; on older branches, a thin furrowed bark of light brown color is formed, which peels off easily. The shoots are powerful and strong, able to withstand the load of many fruit clusters, but require garters on reliable supports.

The leaves of the grape are alternate, whole with serrated edges, the leaf plate consists of 3-5 leaves, the color is emerald-saturated, the leaves of the Sensation grape are bright green, there are grooves on the back side, smooth on top.

Grape flowers are bisexual, very small, collected in panicle-shaped inflorescences, their color is almost the same as the color of the leaves, can be green or light green.

The fruits of Sensation grapes are shaped like a sphere, elongated into a long cylinder, reminiscent of both varieties of parent varieties (Talisman and Rizamat), the color of the berries is also a cross between the green Talisman and the purple Rizamat - pink-beige. The fruits are collected in huge clusters, reaching a weight of up to 1.5 kg, where each berry can be 3-6 cm in size and weigh up to 35 grams. After watching the short video posted in this section, you will have an idea of the actual size of the bunches and berries of Sensation grapes.

Advantages

The main advantage of Sensation grapes is its super early ripening of berries; the growing season lasts only 100-110 days; it manages to ripen even during a short summer in the cold climate of the central Russian region. This distinguishes it very favorably from more heat-loving grape varieties.

The advantages of the Sensation hybrid include the following properties:

  • frost resistance: fruit buds do not freeze at air temperatures down to -25°C, but to guarantee safety even at very low temperatures, it is necessary to cover the vineyard trunk for the winter;
  • high degree of disease resistance: rarely affected by powdery mildew, mildew and gray mold;
  • Sensation grapes propagate well by cuttings: the survival rate of cuttings reaches 82%, takes root in a short time;
  • lack of tendency to reduce the size of berries (peas);
  • high grape yield: the optimal number of bunches per vine is about 45, and if each bunch weighs from 700 g to 1.5 kg, then from one shoot you can get up to 70 kg of ripe berries per season;
  • sensational grape flowers are self-pollinating: there is no need to wait for pollinating insects to arrive or do this difficult task manually;
  • duration of fresh storage and high level of preservation of grapes during transportation;
  • wonderful, well, simply delicious taste of grapes: the pulp is juicy, sweet, with a nutmeg flavor, but not tart, the skin is dense, but not hard;
  • resistance to sudden temperature changes.

The Sensation grape is still undergoing the testing stage; it will take some time to talk with confidence about the other advantages of the variety, but some disadvantages have already appeared.

Flaws

  1. The high sugar content in the berries attracts wild sweet tooths - wasps, trying to feast on the grape juice, cause significant damage to the plantations.
  2. With high productivity of grape bushes, the taste value of the berries decreases.
  3. In winter, additional shelter is needed to preserve moisture in the grape bushes.
Warning! Wasps, making holes in the berries, can remain in them for some time, and a person who did not notice its presence (especially a child) can bite into the berry, thereby exposing himself to the danger of being stung by a wasp.

Be careful, you should not try the fruits without examining the bunch, even if they are very attractive in appearance.

Planting and care

Propagation of Sensation grapes is possible in several ways. If the garden already has a grape bush of any variety, well established and adapted to local conditions, then you can graft Sensation cuttings onto its rootstock. Ready-made seedlings, purchased or borrowed from neighbors, are planted in early spring on plots prepared in the fall. Green grape cuttings are harvested independently from an adult, two or three year old plant.That is, the propagation process is divided into three methods: cuttings, seedlings and green layering.

You can buy cuttings and seedlings, and prepare green cuttings yourself during the summer and store until planting in a special room with an air temperature of at least +8°C and a humidity of at least 70%.

In April or early May, if soil conditions and weather permit, Sensation grape seedlings are planted in prepared areas. Basic landing requirements:

  • the area for grape seedlings should be well warmed by the sun, not shaded by tall trees and bushes, but also not subject to constant drafts;
  • the angle of inclination of the earth's surface when planting Sensation seedlings must be at least 15° so that water does not stagnate at the roots of the grapes; if this is not possible, then it is necessary to arrange a drainage system in advance, because the plant will live in one place for more than one year;
  • you need to plan the site in such a way that all grape seedlings are located at a distance of 70 cm from each other, the row spacing is also at least 70 cm wide;
  • dig a hole for each plant up to 70 cm deep, pour organic and mineral fertilizers mixed with garden soil 1/3 of the way high and top it with a layer of plain soil so that the roots of the grape seedling do not come into direct contact with the fertilizers, pour 10-20 liters of water to the hole;
  • wait 2 weeks until the soil shrinks (or do this preparation in the fall);
  • 24 hours before planting, the roots of grape seedlings are slightly shortened and the plant is placed in a solution with a growth stimulator for better survival of the seedlings;
  • the next day, planting is carried out, that is, the plant is placed vertically in a hole and covered with earth, watered and mulched, trellises and supports are installed.

Sensation grapes are unpretentious in care, but you still can’t do without the necessary measures, these include:

  1. Spring garter of the vine Sensation to trellises and supports.
  2. Removing unproductive grape shoots in the lower part of the bush, pinching stepsons, pruning weak, underdeveloped branches.
  3. Permanent garter of overgrown shoots (more than 20 cm).
  4. Pinching the vine after it has grown to 2.5 m in length, trimming the tops of fruit-bearing shoots so that the plant devotes all its energy to ripening berry clusters.
  5. Loosening the soil, weeding weed, watering

You will get practical experience in planting grape seedlings. You will get a sensation by watching a video clip using the example of a variety of the same type (Veles), which is described by an experienced winegrower.

Reviews

Oksana, 38 years old:
“The Sensation grape seedlings were given to me by my neighbors in the country. Last year I planted them in early spring, in the fall 3 clusters ripened on 2 bushes, the vine was strong, the berries were tasty and juicy, but the size was average. It’s not bad for the first year, you need to wait another 2 years to evaluate the yield of the variety; they say that only in the third year the harvest becomes stable.”
Gregory, 63 years old:
“I have grown a lot of grapes in my time, because I like to test new varieties, so I planted Sensation out of curiosity. Well done, the hybrid turned out to be successful in everything: the berries are large and sweet with a crunch and nutmeg aroma, the bushes are strong, resistant to both frost and disease.”

Conclusion

The Sensation grape variety has not yet been fully tested in the gardens and plots of lovers of this berry, but it is still young, and we hope that it will make itself known soon, when many gardeners and farmers learn more about its wonderful properties. Seedlings have not yet appeared in free trade; only rare agricultural firms grow them for sale, but if you really want something, everything will work out. Look on the Internet, from friends, neighbors. You will be lucky, we are sure and wish you good luck.
