Grapes Jubilee Novocherkassk

The development of new varieties and hybrids of horticultural crops is usually carried out by breeding scientists, but there are exceptions. One of these deviations from generally accepted norms is an interspecific grape hybrid called Jubilee of Novocherkassk. The new variety was received in his garden by ordinary winegrower N.V. Krainov, who is known for independently selecting three famous and large-fruited species: Preobrazhenie, Victor and Jubilee of Novocherkassk. It is not known for certain about the “parents” of Jubilee, but experts are inclined to believe that the variety appeared by crossing Kishmish Radiant and Talisman. The “pedigree” of the brainchild of a self-taught scientist is not as important as the characteristics of the Jubilee: large fruit, excellent taste, high yield, etc.

A detailed description of the Jubilee Novocherkassk grape variety, photos and reviews about it can be found in this article. Here you can find instructions for growing the hybrid and how to propagate it.

Hybrid characteristics

The first thing that catches your eye when you get acquainted with the Novocherkassk Jubilee grapes is the huge beautiful clusters with large shiny berries. Not many varieties can compete with Jubilee on this basis.

Important! The average weight of bunches of grapes is 1 kg, and some of the bunches can reach a weight of three kilograms!

Grapes Jubilee of Novocherkassk variety description:

  • the variety is early ripening - the berries ripen on the 110-120th day, usually this happens in the first half of August;
  • The bushes at Jubilee are very powerful and spreading;
  • grape shoots have a high growth rate;
  • the leaves are large, dark green;
  • the clusters are packed tightly, look beautiful, and have a conical shape;
  • the weight of each grape ranges from 12-18 grams;
  • the diameter of the berries can reach 5 cm, the average length is 4 cm;
  • the shape of the grapes is elongated, the color is pinkish-yellow (there are bushes with monochromatic berries of a pink or whitish hue);
  • The peel on the fruit is dense, but chews well;
  • the pulp of the Jubilee Novocherkassk grapes is tight, fleshy, contains a lot of sugar, and has no additional flavors;
  • Jubilee's frost resistance is average - down to -23 degrees it can winter without shelter;
  • The variety rarely suffers from fungal infections, but prevention still needs to be carried out;
  • Because of the sweetness of the berries, wasps are often interested in grapes, so it is necessary to protect the grapes with a net or use special insect traps;
  • dense clusters tolerate transportation well and can be stored for a certain period of time;
  • The purpose of the Jubilee of Novocherkassk is table, these grapes are good fresh, but they can be processed and used in winemaking;
  • The variety's yield is high; every year this grape pleases not only with the size of the bunches, but also with their quantity;
  • the optimal load on the bush is 22-24 fruit shoots.
Attention! The Jubilee grape variety of Novocherkassk has one characteristic feature: the berries gain sweetness just a few days before their technical maturity. In a short period of time, all the acid in the fruit is converted into sugar.

It is worth considering that Jubilee Novocherkassk is not a technical variety, which means it is not intended for winemaking. You can make homemade wine from this variety, but in small quantities. It is more expedient to grow table grapes for fresh consumption or for sale.

Advantages and disadvantages

Those winegrowers who plant Novocherkassk Jubilee rely on the large-fruited and productive variety of this variety, because its most important advantage is its abundance and presentable appearance (as evidenced by the photo).

The Jubilee has several other significant advantages:

  • balanced and very pleasant taste;
  • high productivity;
  • resistance to fungal diseases;
  • good frost resistance;
  • fast and strong growth of the bush;
  • suitability for transportation and storage.

It would be strange if such beautiful and large-fruited grapes had absolutely no flaws. The Novocherkassk Jubilee also has some disadvantages:

  • grapes require normalization and need proper pruning;
  • bushes need preventive treatment against fungal and other diseases;
  • stepsons produce a weak harvest;
  • bunches of grapes have to be protected from wasps, as insects can seriously damage their presentation.
Advice! In regions with not very mild winters, it is recommended to cover the Jubilee with earth or special materials.

Agrotechnical rules

The Jubilee Novocherkassk grape variety cannot be called very capricious and demanding, but this large-fruited hybrid requires an approach. The winegrower will reap a good harvest of beautiful and densely packed bunches only if he provides the Jubilee with competent care and follows all the rules for planting and propagating these grapes.

Preparing for landing

Young grape seedlings are sensitive to unfavorable external factors, such as decreased temperature, wind, insufficient or high humidity. Therefore, it is necessary to choose the right time to plant seedlings of the Novocherkassk Jubilee. Most winegrowers consider the optimal time for planting an early-ripening hybrid to be mid-to-late April, when the air warms up to 10-15 degrees and the soil temperature is between 8-10 degrees.

Important! Jubilee can be propagated in a variety of ways, including grafting onto its own roots, planting seedlings, and others. Not all of these methods can be implemented in the spring; for example, grafting a green cutting to a green rootstock is carried out in the fall.

The second thing a winegrower must think about is choosing a suitable location for the new variety. Jubilee Novocherkassk is a vigorous-growing grape, so it will need a lot of space. It is also necessary to take care of reliable and durable support for the massive vine. It is better to find a sunny place for grapes, located on a hill or on a plain.

Cold weather and strong winds are contraindicated for heat-loving grapes, so the best place for planting them is considered to be the southern wall of an outbuilding, fence or house.

The Jubilee grapes of Novocherkassk are not too demanding on soil, but still they need nutritious soil.The best option is black soil, but loam can also be used. High-lying groundwater can wash away the deep roots of the Jubilee; in this case, a drainage system is thought out.

Attention! Moisture should not stagnate in the soil under the grapes, because this can lead to rotting or infection of the roots.

Planting grapes

Novocherkassk Jubilee grapes can be propagated in several ways. Most often, winegrowers buy ready-made seedlings with an open or closed root system. In this case, it is necessary to choose the right planting material: the seedling must be strong and healthy, its roots must be white, flexible and moist.

To plant Jubilee seedlings, pits about a meter deep are prepared, at the bottom of which a layer of nutritious soil or rotted fertilizer is poured. The roots of young grapes are straightened and covered with earth. After this, the soil must be compacted and watered abundantly. The gardener must be prepared for the fact that he will soon need to prune the shoots and build a support, because the Jubilee vine grows very quickly.

It is much cheaper to propagate grapes by cuttings, grafting them onto green shoots. The cuttings need to be prepared. To do this, their lower part is cut 2-3 mm from the upper bud, and the top is dipped in melted paraffin - this will help retain moisture and prevent the cuttings from drying out.

Attention! The rootstock is also prepared in advance. First, the entire old grape bush is cut off, after which the wood is cleaned and dirt is removed. Then you need to split the vine using an ax or sharp knife.

Before grafting, the bottom of the cutting is soaked in water or a growth stimulant.Then the edges of the cutting and the cleft of the rootstock are pressed tightly so that the lower bud is on the surface. Wrap the grafting site with material that tends to decompose. Often the joint is coated with clay or bandaged with polyethylene to retain moisture. After all the procedures, the standard with the graft is watered generously.

Vineyard care

As already mentioned, the Jubilee of Novocherkassk cannot be called capricious; these grapes are unpretentious and not too demanding in care. However, only those owners who have devoted sufficient attention and time to their vineyards can expect large harvests.

Caring for Novocherkassk Jubilee grapes is as follows:

  1. Watering the grapes necessary as the soil dries out, while paying attention to the presence of natural precipitation in the region. However, Jubilee is watered twice a summer, no matter what: before the shoots bloom and immediately after flowering. If the bushes do not have enough moisture, this will certainly affect the size of the berries and their taste.
  2. To keep water in the soil longer, use mulch. It is best to take humus for these purposes and cover it with a three-centimeter layer, filling the circle around the trunk. In addition to retaining moisture, such mulch will fertilize the grapes and insulate its roots in frosty weather.
  3. Feed The anniversary of Novocherkassk should be celebrated at least once a year. In autumn they use organic matter, and in spring and summer it is better to give preference to mineral complexes. Particular attention is paid to such components as potassium and phosphorus - the yield of grapes and the taste of its fruit depend on them.
  4. Considering the rapid growth of the Jubilee Novocherkassk grapes, it will have to be grown regularly trim and standardize. It is recommended to perform pruning in autumn or early spring, before the sap flows in the plant. No more than 24 shoots should be left on each bush, the total number of fruit buds should be about 45. It will be more convenient to care for Jubilee grapes if the bush is shaped like a fan. You need to shorten the shoots once a year, until the first bud. When the clusters are formed, they are thinned out, leaving no more than one bunch of grapes on the shoot.
  5. Before winter in the northern regions Jubilee need to be covered. Various methods and materials are used to insulate the vine. It is most convenient to use burlap and hay, which are simply wrapped around the Jubilee wood. In regions with very cold winters, the grapes are pressed to the ground and covered with soil and snow. Young seedlings and cuttings are insulated even in the south of Russia.
  6. Jubilee Novocherkassk is resistant to various diseases, but against powdery mildew and mildew you need to use preventive treatment. Spray the entire grape bush 2-3 times per season.
Attention! Reviews from winegrowers regarding the resistance of Jubilee to diseases vary greatly. Some owners note the high resistance of grapes, others talk about the need for constant preventive maintenance. Most likely, a lot here depends on the climate in a particular region and the method of cultivation.

Review of the variety

Petr Ivanovich
I purchased the new Novocherkassk Jubilee grapes from the inventor of the variety himself, Krainov. All three seedlings have taken root just fine; already this year the shoots have grown several times. Three years later the bushes were already quite powerful, and we collected the first harvest on giant clusters. I can say that my grapes did not get sick. True, twice a season I treated the bushes with Bordeaux mixture.The berries were very large, the maximum diameter was 5.2 cm. The clusters were large, well-filled, and weighed, on average, 800-1000 grams. Jubilee has an excellent, dessert taste. Overall, we liked these grapes.

Conclusion

The Jubilee Novocherkassk grape is an excellent interspecific hybrid with complex resistance to diseases and frost. This variety is perfect for growing on private farms, for fresh consumption or for sale in local markets.
