Romos carrots are a hybrid of Dutch selection intended for industrial and private cultivation. The variety is productive, cold-resistant, with high immunity to infections. Undemanding in care, characterized by stable fruiting. It has a rich chemical composition and good taste.
History of selection
Romos carrots were created on the basis of the Dutch agricultural company Bejo Zaden BV, the world's leading company in the production and distribution of seeds of agricultural vegetable crops. Due to its characteristics, cold resistance and ease of care, Romos carrots are included in the State Register with a recommendation for cultivation in the Far Eastern, Central and Central regions.
Description of the Romos carrot variety
The hybrid belongs to the Berlicumer variety, characterized by productivity, disease resistance, high nutritional value and good taste.
Biological features:
- The surface is smooth, with short white vertical streaks, with residual thin root shoots.
- The color is bright orange; in a cross section, the thickness of the bark is significantly greater than the core; there is no particular difference in the color of the parts.
- The size of the carrots in one bed is even, length – 25 cm, diameter – 4 cm.
- Weight – 200 g.
- Taste with a predominance of sugars, carrots are juicy, without hard fibers.
Carrots are processed into juice, used in culinary recipes for salads, stews, and eaten fresh.
Characteristics of Romos carrots
The hybrid, like all varieties of the crop, is characterized by a two-year growing season. The plant is grown as an annual. Carrots produce seeds, but they are not suitable for cultivation. The seed material has low germination and does not retain varietal characteristics.
Romosa is a cold-resistant hybrid that begins to grow at temperatures +3-40 C. Seedlings tolerate -4 without damage0 C. But the variety is demanding in terms of light conditions. The crop achieves optimal yield in an open area. It does not tolerate even periodic shading.
Maturation period
Romosa is a mid-season variety that is suitable for early spring and late winter sowing. From the moment the root crop is formed until the biological ripeness of the carrots, four months pass. Harvesting is carried out after the onset of autumn frosts, approximately at the end of September or at the beginning of October. The timing depends on the climate in the region.
Romos carrot yield
You can get a good harvest only if certain requirements are met.In favorable conditions from 1m2 up to 6.5 kg of Romos carrots are harvested, in production fields - 470 kg per 1 ha.
Resistance to diseases and pests
If the carrots have enough light and the soil is not waterlogged, Romos practically does not get sick. The hybrid is genetically immune to a number of infections dangerous to the culture:
- root eater;
- fomoza;
- sclerotinia;
- cercospora;
- botrytiosis.
If there are plant debris left on the site, and the season is wet and warm, then infection with Alternaria (black rot) is possible. Therefore, the Romos carrot variety is not recommended for subtropical climates.
Of the pests, all types of aphids and cruciferous flea beetles do not harm the hybrid. Only the carrot fly parasitizes crop beds.
Landing regions
Favorable climatic conditions for the growth of Romos carrots: temperature no higher than +26 0C, minimum seasonal precipitation. High yields are possible only in the following regions:
- Far Eastern;
- Central;
- Volgo-Vyatsky;
- Ural;
- Nizhnevolzhsky.
Quite good productivity of the variety is noted in the Moscow region and Penza region.
Advantages and disadvantages
Gardeners appreciated Romos carrots. Culture is characterized by a number of positive qualities. The root vegetable contains 8.2% sugars, which gives carrots a sweet taste.
Pros:
- good taste and juiciness;
- stable yield;
- resistance to cracking;
- transportability;
- long shelf life;
- standard agricultural technology;
- attractive presentation.
The variety has no significant disadvantages. The only negative is that during the rainy season, carrots need preventive treatment against fungal infection.
Growing Tips
For the Romos variety, choose a sunny area with light, humus-enriched soil. Sowing of seeds is carried out in early spring, when the soil warms up to +3 0C.
Planting carrots:
- The bed is dug up, organic matter and mineral fertilizers are added.
- Level the surface.
- Make grooves to a depth of 2 cm, maintaining an interval of 25 cm between them.
- The seeds are laid out, covered, and watered with Energen solution.
Planting material germinates in about two weeks. All this time, the soil is moistened abundantly with warm water.
Agricultural technology for Romos carrots:
- Loosen the row spacing after 3-5 waterings. At the same time, weeds are removed.
- After the formation of the third full leaf, the planting is thinned out at intervals of 4-5 cm.
- Water regularly so that the soil does not dry out. Overmoistening is unacceptable.
- They are fed with “Bud” at the end of May, with “Agricola Vegeta” in mid-June, and after 15 days they are fertilized with “Effekton-O”.
It is not recommended to use fresh manure, as carrots may grow deformed.
Pest and disease control
Damage to the Romos hybrid is caused by the larvae of the carrot fly; they gnaw passages on the surface of the root crop and reach the core.
To prevent the spread of pests, the rows are regularly loosened, weeds are removed, and watering is optimized, eliminating moisture stagnation. To scare away an adult, garlic or mustard is planted near the garden bed. In the second half of May, carrots are treated with Iskra DE.
With high air and soil humidity in hot weather, the Romos variety suffers from Alternaria.Fungal spores intensively spread on weeds and their remains.
Treat the tops (10-15 cm) with “Home”. In mid-July, the Barrier preparation is added near the carrots.
Harvesting and storage
The soil during harvesting of Romos should be dry or moderately moist. Root crops are dug up and pulled out by the tops. Remains of soil are removed by hand, without shaking or hitting the ground. The leaves are trimmed, the roots are sorted. Small and damaged specimens are not stored. To prevent carrots from losing moisture, the crop is transferred from the site under a canopy. Store in a dark room at a temperature no higher than +40 C and air humidity 90-95%.
Conclusion
Romos carrots are an ideal variety for growing in temperate climates. The hybrid is not afraid of sub-zero temperatures; it can be sown in early spring or before winter. The crop is productive, with a high level of marketable output. The taste is sweet, the structure of the root vegetable is juicy and tender. The Romos variety retains its nutritional value and appearance for a long time.
