Grape variety Asya: description, photos, reviews

Asya grapes are a Ukrainian variety, quite well known in Russia. It is distinguished by very large red-violet berries. The taste is sweet, pleasant, practically without sourness. The hybrid is quite resistant to winter, so it can be grown even in certain areas of the middle zone.

History of appearance

The Asya grape is a hybrid variety bred by folk breeder V.V. Zagorulko. (Ukraine, Zaporozhye region). He began carrying out crossbreeding work back in the 1990s. Thanks to this, in recent years it has been possible to develop several varieties and hybrid forms.

For example, Asya grapes were obtained by crossing the Dunav and Demetra varieties. A bush with great vigor, good yield and tasty berries. The crop is not included in the Russian register of selection achievements. Thanks to its relatively good winter hardiness, it has spread to different regions of the country.

Description of Asya grapes

Asya grape bushes are tall, and their growth vigor is good, but if the plant is grafted, it is average. The crowns of young shoots are closed and without pubescence. The leaves are yellowish-green in color, with purple and dark red edges. The shape is typical five-lobed, with strong dissection.

The profile of Asya grape leaves is wavy. The edges of the blades are drooping, the surface is smooth. In this case, adult foliage is painted dark green, against which the light veins are clearly visible. The side cutouts at the top are deep, mostly open, lyre-shaped, slit-shaped. The bottom is pointed.

The lower cuts of the leaves of the Asya grape are much smaller in size, barely outlined. The petiole recesses are vaulted or lancet, sometimes lyre-shaped, the bottom is sharp. The petioles are moderately long, greenish in color, and have longitudinal red stripes.

Hybrid Asya is distinguished by large berries of unusual shape

There are teeth along the edges of the grape leaves; they are moderately large and triangular. The edges are straight or slightly curved, the apices are pointed. Flowers are female only. Therefore, to pollinate Asi, it is necessary to plant bisexual flowers. Flowers and ovaries usually do not fall off, which ensures a good harvest.

Bunches

The clusters of Asya hybrid grapes are of a regular conical or cylindrical conical shape, slightly elongated. They reach 40-50 cm in length. The average weight ranges from 700 g to 1 kg. In favorable weather conditions and subject to the rules of agricultural technology, you can get very large bunches weighing up to 1.5 kg.

The brush is moderately loose, so the berries are not squeezed and can easily be transported to the place of sale or processing. Their combs are strong and long, branch well, and are light green in color.

Berries

The Asya grape berries are large, the average weight of one piece is 13-14 g. The shape is obovate, the surface is smooth, red-violet in color. Outwardly they look very attractive, since the fruits are aligned and homogeneous. A waxy coating is noticeable on the surface, which can be easily wiped off with your finger.

Vine

The Asya grape vine is quite strong and ripens evenly and in a timely manner. As it ripens, it turns brown, often with a reddish tint.

Characteristics of Asya grape variety

Hybrid Asya adapts well to different climatic conditions. The crop is productive and produces large and tasty marketable berries. In most Russian regions it needs winter shelter.

Ripening period of Asya grapes

In the conditions of the southern regions of Russia, the Asya crop ripens in the third ten days of August, i.e. almost by the beginning of September. In other areas, the deadlines are shifted by several days. The complete vegetation cycle of Asya grapes from bud swelling to fruit ripening lasts from 120 to 130 days.

Productivity

The crop is characterized by high productivity - 8-10 kg of berries are harvested from one bush. Subject to careful adherence to agricultural technology and in good weather, you can get up to 20 kg

Taste qualities

The taste of Asya grapes is sweet, with delicate sourness, quite harmonious. The pulp is dense, fleshy consistency, juicy. At the same time, there is no special aroma. The skin is thin and when bitten, its presence is imperceptible.

Berries are juicy and sweet

The total sugar content in grape juice is about 17-19 g per 100 ml. The titratable acidity indicator is 4-5 g per 1 liter. Due to this, the sour taste is almost not felt. Each berry contains 2-3 seeds.Moreover, the pulp has a large volume, so the seeds are also unnoticeable.

Growing regions

It is noted that for complete ripeness, the sum of active temperatures during the season should be at least 2600 degrees. Therefore, Asya grapes can be grown not only in the southern regions, but also in the Volga and Black Earth regions, and partly in the middle zone. The northern border of distribution runs along the conventional line “Lipetsk – Tambov – Orel”.

Frost resistance

The winter hardiness indicator reaches -20 degrees - it is at this minimum temperature that Asya grapes can normally survive frosts and recover in the spring. Therefore, in the regions of the North Caucasus, in the Krasnodar Territory and neighboring regions, it is not necessary to cover it for the winter (although some gardeners recommend doing this). In other regions, mandatory preparation for the winter period is required.

Drought resistance

The drought tolerance of Asya grapes is not very high. The variety may suffer from prolonged heat and dry winds. Therefore, during such periods it needs additional intensive watering.

Resistance to diseases and pests

The immunity of Asya grapes is not bad - if the rules of care are followed, it does not suffer from diseases. But with excessive watering and infrequent feeding, it can develop chlorosis, oidium, anthracnose, and mildew. At the beginning of spring, you need to carry out at least two preventive treatments using fungicides:

  • "HOM";
  • "Skor";
  • "Abiga Peak";
  • "Fundazol" and others.

To protect Asya grapes from mites, itch, leaf rollers and other pests, they are treated with insectoacaricides:

  • "Kleschevit";
  • "Matrin Bio";
  • "Fufanon";
  • "Coragen."
Important! It is better to plan spraying of bushes for late evening. In this case, the weather should be dry and without strong wind.

Application

Asya grapes are mainly consumed fresh. They have a good presentation, so they can be used for sale. You can also send it for processing or home preservation. Prepared products (jam, jelly, juices) are distinguished not only by their pleasant taste, but also by their rich color.

Advantages and disadvantages

Asya grapes are valued for their very large, attractive berries with a pronounced sweet taste. The yield of the crop is really high, so the bushes can be grown both for your own needs and for commercial purposes.

The berries are large, the clusters have a regular conical shape

Pros:

  • dessert taste;
  • attractive presentation;
  • high productivity;
  • large bunches;
  • relatively high winter hardiness;
  • good immunity to diseases;
  • keeping quality.

Minuses:

  • in the Moscow region and neighboring regions may not have time to ripen;
  • pollinator planting required;
  • the berries have no aroma;
  • bushes need installation of supports;
  • drought resistance is low.

Landing Features

It is better to plant seedlings in a sunny, fairly dry area, protected from draft winds. It is recommended to plan the procedure for September, 1-1.5 months before the first frost. Since the hybrid bushes are quite tall and spreading, the interval between holes should be at least 1.5 m, and between rows - from 2 m.

Planting holes are dug a month in advance. They must first be fertilized and watered. The soil should not only be fertile, but also light. As a basis, you can take turf soil, peat, humus and sand in a ratio of 2:1:1:1.

Rules of care

Caring for Asya grapes is simple, but there are several features:

  1. Watering is regular, quite plentiful - an adult bush requires at least 30 liters.
  2. Fertilizing is applied only from 3-4 years after planting.
  3. The shoots must be tied up, as they can break under the weight of the harvest and gusts of wind.
  4. For the winter, the tree trunk circle is carefully mulched, and the treated and trimmed vine is laid on plywood, covered with a thick film or agrofibre on top.

Regular fertilizing and watering ensure very good yields

Conclusion

Asya grapes are a rather interesting variety, which is primarily valued for its large fruit and high yield. The berries are juicy, tasty, and they tolerate transportation well. When caring, you should take into account that the vine may break under the weight of the harvest. Another important point is that pollinators must be planted next to the bushes.

Reviews of Asya grapes

Krasina Daria, 29 years old, Vladikavkaz
The Asya grapes began to bear fruit in the third year, and I immediately liked them. The berries are as in the description: reddish-burgundy, large. They taste sweet, no worse than Turkish ones. And the yield of the variety is sometimes more than the declared 10 kg per bush. It may vary by region.
Nosova Marina, 48 years old, Volgograd
Asya grapes are good for everyone, but without pollinators of other varieties they will not set fruit. All of its flowers are female - this is the only significant drawback. But the berries are large and dark red. This is almost the only variety with such fruits that can be grown in our region.
Vorobyova Anna, 39 years old, Tuapse
Asya has become my favorite grape; for me it is one of the sweetest varieties. Moreover, it is not cloying, but sweet. The berries have no aroma, but they are dense and juicy. The skin is thin and not noticeable when bitten. But the fruits themselves keep their shape well. They do not get crushed during transportation.
