Characteristics of remontant raspberries

This type of raspberry was bred 200 years ago. And in the future, breeders worked hard and developed varieties specifically for the middle zone. In the Moscow region, remontant raspberries have been grown for about 70 years. This species may look no different from ordinary raspberries. These are perennial bushes with a spreading root system. But not every remontant raspberry forms root shoots, and, in general, can reproduce poorly in this way.

The main difference between this species is that the berries are formed mainly on young shoots. Every spring, young stems grow on the bush, they bear fruit, and by winter the upper parts of the branches dry out. They need to be cut off, leaving a few buds. Next year, new fertile shoots form on the remaining part of the stem. Some gardeners leave last year's stems, but in this case the berries will be small. Therefore, the bush should be pruned without sparing. This is the only way to achieve a generous harvest on annual shoots.

At the same time, remontant raspberries have a number of other advantages. It has high disease resistance and is rarely affected by pests. Thanks to this, the berries grow neat and unspoilt by insects. These raspberries are much easier to care for. With timely pruning remontant raspberries in autumn and proper care, the berries grow very large. Now many gardeners grow remontant raspberries. Moreover, the choice of varieties is very large. There is early, late and high yielding raspberries. In general, there is a choice for every taste.

Reviews

Olga, Podolsk
I was very pleased with the Kalashnik variety. This raspberry has a unique sweet taste and aroma. Productivity, without exaggeration, is very high. Can be grown for industrial purposes. I'm sure it will be profitable. We currently have a small area planted, but we plan to expand it in the future. A small garden bed is enough for jam and compotes.
Nadezhda, Voskresensk
I only recently discovered remontant raspberries. I've already tried a couple of varieties. It is very convenient that the fruiting period is extended until autumn, since we have never had time to enjoy fresh berries before. Now we can eat fresh, roll up, and freeze. The yield of such raspberries is much higher than that of conventional varieties. The old raspberries had to be dug up; they were much inferior to the remontant varieties.
