Raspberry Indian summer

One of the most delicious summer berries is raspberries. Its appearance, smell, color, shape and size are familiar to everyone from childhood. Initially, raspberries were collected in the forests. Then the plant was cultivated and a huge number of garden varieties were bred. Today, on almost any garden plot you can find bushes of a wide variety of plant species, among which there are rare innovative developments of scientists. One of the interesting and favorite varieties among gardeners is the Indian Summer raspberry.

Features of raspberry bushes and Indian Summer berries

The raspberry variety “Indian Summer” is the first remontant type of garden bushes; the branches of the fruit plant rise to 1.5-2 meters. The difference between the variety is that the gardener can pinch the top, reducing the spreading of the crown. The leaves do not cover the fruits and allow you to see the entire harvest. The shape is quite large, embossed and dark green. The creator of the variety is Professor I. Kazakov. He crossed two developments of scientists: Kostinbrodsky and Kuzmina News. The breeder took the best qualities and added stability, duration and gradual ripening of fruits to the existing characteristics. The result is the creation of the Indian Summer berry variety.

Raspberries are zoned for cultivation in the Central, North Caucasus and Western regions. The variety is not suitable for southern territories, as it does not like drought and hot weather conditions. The berry will not produce a harvest even in cold climates. The variety is frost-resistant, can withstand temperatures of 30 degrees. At lower temperatures the bush dies. You can cover the raspberry roots with snow and special structures.

  • The shape of the raspberry fruit is oval, oblong.
  • Weight is small (3-3.5 grams).
  • The color is dark crimson.

Most of the crop is produced at the top of the branches. The fruits are easily removed from the stalk and retain their integrity and attractiveness. From one raspberry bush you can collect up to 3 kg of berries. To harvest twice a season, plants of different ages are kept on the site: one- and two-year-olds. The first harvest will begin in June, with ripening lasting until early October, the Indian summer season. If you deal only with annuals, the harvest will ripen later - by August, but there will be more of it, the fruits will be riper and tastier.

Important! The raspberry root system is very strong and, with proper care, easily tolerates winter frosts and various diseases.

Caring for Indian Summer bushes

Raspberry "Indian Summer" in terms of care is similar to the work on growing other varieties of berry bushes. To get good fruits and a rich harvest, you need to know and follow a number of simple rules:

  • Raspberries love sunlit places. For planting, it is recommended to choose the southern and illuminated part of the site.
  • The moisture-loving plant requires constant watering.
  • There should not be a lot of moisture to prevent the roots from rotting. Oversaturation of water can lead to waterlogging of the soil and death of the plant.
  • The soil under the plant should be loosened and removed weeds.
  • It is recommended to constantly fertilize the soil with humus, mineral or organic fertilizers.

During the growth period, excess shoots are removed from the Indian Summer raspberry bush. The remaining stems and shoots will produce larger fruits. To avoid infection of the plant, it is recommended to regularly loosen the soil, allowing air to reach the roots. Raspberries should not be allowed to grow, forming continuous dense thickets. The harvest can be used fresh for preparing homemade preparations: compotes, jam, preserves. Varietal raspberries are a medicinal berry. During a cold, people who consume raspberry products experience a decrease in temperature and increased sweating.

Important! The leaves of the shrub may also be beneficial for health problems. Healers prepare healing decoctions and tinctures from dry and fresh leaves.

Planting and propagation of varieties

It is recommended to plant varietal plant seedlings in the spring, when the weather becomes warm. Another planting period is autumn, before the onset of cold weather. Young raspberry shoots will be able to take root and bear fruit already during the planting season. The work requires a competent gardening approach. The quantity of the Indian Summer raspberry harvest, the taste and quality of the berries will depend on the correctness of the actions.

  1. First you need to prepare recesses measuring 50x50 cm. The distance between the recesses is at least 1 m.
  2. When placing the seedlings in a hole, the roots are carefully spread to the sides, and the buds are left on the surface.
  3. The soil in the pit is fertilized with peat or humus. Only soil enriched with nutrients will produce a high yield.
  4. After completing the work, pour about a bucket of water under each plant.

Every year at the end of autumn and after the last berries are collected, pruning is carried out. At this stage, all shoots and stems that are two years old are removed. If some of the branches cannot be cut, then exactly the same pruning can be repeated in the spring. The more the shoots on the stem are pruned, the later the harvest will appear, the healthier and tastier the fruits will be. In addition, the shape of the berries will change - they will become more elongated.

Reproduction of the remontant raspberry variety “Indian Summer” is carried out using a method unique to this species. The root shoots are left to grow for the next season, the remaining branches are removed. The formation of a raspberry bush is repeated every year.

Advice! Gardeners recommend cutting out only the central part and leaving the side branches free. If everything is done correctly, new fruit-bearing shoots will begin to emerge from the root.

Reviews

Reviews from gardeners characterize the Indian Summer raspberry variety as tasty and productive. The disadvantages include low transportability. Small-sized fruits are taken in quantity and growth time. It’s nice to enjoy fresh, tasty and aromatic berries, which are also healthy, until autumn. The Indian Summer variety is no longer young, but remains popular among gardeners today.

I try not to mix the Indian Summer raspberry variety with other plants. It is planted separately along the path deep into the garden. The berries ripen gradually; you can enjoy a fresh harvest almost all summer and autumn. There is no need to rush with homemade preparations. All summer, slowly, you can pick berries and prepare them for the winter in different forms.

I like Indian Summer raspberries for several reasons. The bush is low, not spreading, and does not require special care. The berry is not large, but beautiful and pleasant to the taste. The most attractive thing is that the bush bears fruit all summer. In the fall, when all other fruits have already ripened and fallen away, ripe raspberries decorate the plot and delight the whole family.

The Indian Summer harvest is enough to enjoy the fruits fresh and prepare homemade preparations. The stems do not require additional devices; they stand straight, do not break from the wind, and do not bend from rain.
