Raspberry Orange miracle

Almost every gardener grows raspberries. The plant is unpretentious. But the benefits of raspberries, leaves and flowers are enormous. Delicious aromatic fruits come in all sorts of colors. In recent years, Russians have become interested in remontant varieties, among which the Orange Miracle raspberry is popular.

Remontant raspberry varieties have their own characteristics when planting, growing, and propagating. Beginner gardeners make many mistakes. The article will discuss the nuances of the Orange Miracle variety regarding care.

Description

The remontant raspberry of the Orange Miracle variety corresponds to the description. It was created by domestic breeders from the city of Bryansk.

Raspberry Features:

  • The height of the bush is up to two meters. Raspberry shoots are not spreading, compact, but grow slowly. Every year up to 8 erect shoots are formed. The prickly thorns located from bottom to top can be clearly felt on them;
  • The foliage is bright green, with noticeable wrinkles. The teeth on the leaves are small.
  • Velvety orange berries are large: up to 4 cm long, weighing up to 8 grams. Some plants can have up to 8 grams. To compare the raspberries in the photo, a matchbox was used.In sunny summers the fruits turn pinkish. Cloudy weather affects the color in its own way: The orange miracle is colored with yellowish berries.
  • The fruits of this raspberry variety are dense, the drupes do not disintegrate into particles after harvesting and remain intact. The fruit itself has an elongated conical shape, with a rounded tip.
  • The taste of the berries also depends on the number of sunny days. The more sun, the sweeter the berry. Cloudy weather and rain add sourness to the fruits.
  • The variety Orange Miracle is mid-season, fruiting is extended. Apparently, this is why this raspberry is practically not cultivated in large gardening farms. Ripening begins towards the end of July and continues until the first frost.

Pros and cons of the variety

pros

Raspberry Orange Miracle has taken a strong position in Russian gardens thanks to a number of advantages:

  1. Productivity is high. One bush produces up to 3 kg of delicious aromatic berries.
  2. Dense fruits are distinguished by keeping quality and transportability. Gardeners note in reviews that raspberries of this variety can be stored in a room for up to 5 days, or on a refrigerator shelf for up to two weeks. Isn't this a miracle!
  3. The berries adhere firmly to the petioles, and even overripe ones rarely fall off.
  4. The plants are frost-resistant; with good shelter, they do not freeze even at temperatures from -25 to -30 degrees.
  5. The life cycle in one place is large. Raspberry plantings do not need to be renewed for up to 15 years, but the varietal qualities do not change.
  6. The berries are hypoallergenic due to their orange color.
  7. Tasters give the Orange Miracle variety up to 4.7 points out of 5.
  8. The Orange Miracle raspberry, judging by the description of the variety, photos and reviews from gardeners, has a unique property not inherent in other raspberry plants: unripe berries can reach technical ripeness if the branches are placed in water. Raspberry berry bouquets gradually change color and create a unique design in the room. The aroma of berries lingers in the room for up to a week and a half.
  9. Culinary properties are high. Raspberries grown in summer can be canned, frozen, or dried.

Disadvantages of the variety

As you can see, the remontant raspberry variety has many advantages. Are there any disadvantages? Let's look into this issue so that novice gardeners can make the right choice:

  1. The plant has sharp thorns already growing on the shoots of the first year.
  2. The wind can break flexible shoots and damage the berries themselves on the thorns. But if you tie up the raspberries, the problem disappears by itself.
  3. Breeders failed to instill immunity to gray rot.
  4. Raspberries of this variety do not tolerate drought well; even short-term drying out of the soil is not allowed.

As can be seen from the characteristics of the remontant raspberry variety Orange Miracle, there are not many shortcomings. Compared to its advantages, they cannot cause gardeners to refuse to grow this amazing plant.

How to plant raspberries correctly

Remontant raspberries with orange berries are recommended for cultivation in many regions of Russia. The main condition is to plant the plant correctly. This is exactly what worries those who are just starting to deal with remontant raspberry varieties. We hope that our tips will help you avoid mistakes.

Features of choosing seedlings

The choice of raspberry seedlings when planting the remontant variety Orange Miracle must be approached seriously. Purchasing from random sellers is not advisable. After all, it is unknown in what conditions raspberries were grown. Often, diseases and pests can be brought to the site along with the seedling.

In addition, it often happens that unscrupulous sellers can sell who knows what instead of the Orange miracle. Therefore, it is best to buy planting material from nurseries.

What should a viable raspberry seedling be like:

  1. It should have no more than 2-3 shoots without the slightest signs of damage or disease. The presence of leaves is not a negative quality. They can also be used to determine the health of the plant.
  2. The root of a seedling of this raspberry variety needs to be given special attention. If the root system is open, rot and flaking scales are easy to notice. The presence of brown roots indicates that the plant has been without water for a long time. Such seedlings cannot be taken. Seedlings with an open system cannot be stored in the sun; they quickly lose their viability.
  3. In a closed root system, the soil is stitched with white roots.
Advice! A healthy seedling of remontant varietal raspberry should be no thinner than 1-2 cm in diameter, up to 80 cm high with a healthy root system.

Difference between open and closed root systems

Let's understand these concepts, because many things are unclear to novice gardeners:

  1. Raspberry seedlings that were grown in the field and temporarily buried or wrapped in cellophane have an open root system. When purchasing, you need to pay attention to the presence of white roots. This is a sign that the plant was dug up recently. Such seedlings are inexpensive, but their survival rate is lower.
  2. Seedlings with a closed system are grown in containers and sold with a large lump of soil. If, when removed, the lump does not crumble and is stitched with roots, then the planting material is good. The seedlings are a little expensive, but they take root quickly. Although in this case there may be flaws. If the seller is unscrupulous, a lump of earth can transfer diseases and pests to the site. These seedlings of remontant raspberries in the photo below, judging by the description, are a good option for gardeners.

Site selection

To grow healthy raspberries and get a rich harvest of berries, you need to choose an open area with good lighting for the Orange Miracle. If you grow bushes in a shaded state, the taste of the berries will not change for the better. And the yield will decrease. When placing seedlings, you need to protect them from the north wind.

Setting the stage

The Orange Miracle variety does not grow well in acidic soils. The predecessors of remontant raspberries with orange berries can be tomatoes, cucumbers, and eggplants.

Warning! It is not worth planting seedlings of a new variety on an old raspberry bed: not only is the soil depleted to the limit, but, most importantly, disease spores and pests may remain in it.

The soil for raspberries is prepared 30 days before planting. Fertilizers are applied to the soil:

  • potassium sulfate – 45 grams;
  • superphosphate – 15 grams;
  • humus or compost - up to 12 kg.

The fertilizer is placed in the holes and mixed with the soil.

Immediately before planting, a trench is dug at least half a meter along the proposed raspberry bed. You also need to put potassium sulfate and superphosphate in a glass, and a liter jar of ash per linear meter. The top of the trench is covered with earth and compacted. Such a trench will give new shoots of remontant raspberries additional nutrition.

Features of planting seedlings

A raspberry variety with orange berries bears fruit on shoots of the first and second year. Therefore, a plant planted in spring will already produce a harvest by the end of summer.

Judging by the reviews of gardeners, some of them plant in the spring, while others prefer autumn work.

Advice! In the spring it is better to take raspberry seedlings with an open system, and in the fall with a closed one.

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. If an orange raspberry seedling with an open root system is planted permanently, then first cut the roots, then shorten the shoot by a third.
  2. Having lowered the seedling into the hole, hold it vertically. The roots are carefully straightened into the hole. When covered with soil, the buds should also be at the root. But there is no need to dig in the root collar. When planting, it remains at ground level.
  3. After planting, pour 2-3 buckets of water under each raspberry seedling of this variety.
  4. To retain moisture and prevent the formation of an airtight crust, plants are mulched with humus or compost. In autumn, sawdust or dry leaves can be used as mulch.

It is easier to plant a raspberry seedling with a closed root system.

Rules of care

Judging by the description and reviews, the remontant raspberry Orange Miracle is considered an unpretentious plant. There is nothing difficult about growing and caring for. Everything is exactly the same as with other raspberry bushes of other varieties. The main thing is to water, prune, tie up and feed the raspberries during the growing season. Naturally, you will have to take care of shelter for the winter.

The remontant variety Orange Miracle is demanding when it comes to watering. We talked about this in the description and characteristics of the raspberry variety. But overwatering can cause root rot and other diseases. Therefore, you need to be careful with this type of care for remontant raspberries with orange berries.

The plantings are fed throughout the growing season. This raspberry variety responds well to solutions of mullein and bird droppings. Wood ash is also added between the rows and under the plants. It is better to apply fertilizing before watering.

Important! The use of fertilizing increases the yield of the remontant raspberry variety Orange Miracle.

Look at this photo, you just want to reach out to the berry.

Raspberry beds should not be allowed to become overgrown weeds. After weeding and watering, surface loosening of the soil is carried out.

Since the raspberries of the Orange Miracle variety, as noted in the description, have a lot of large berries, the shoots begin to bend to the ground, and you can lose part of the harvest. Tying raspberries to a trellis will help save the situation. Experienced gardeners, leaving reviews, also draw the attention of beginners to this stage of caring for the Orange miracle.

Pruning and shelter for the winter

Remontant raspberries with orange berries can be grown with one-year and two-year shoots. Each gardener decides this issue individually; there is no consensus on this issue.

If you leave replacement shoots for the winter, then they need to be bent to the ground at the end of October, before they harden, and tied into bunches. The beds are completely covered in November. Dry humus, compost, and sawdust can serve as cover for raspberries.

When growing the remontant raspberry variety Orange Miracle on the shoots of the first year, the fruit-bearing bushes are cut off at the base of the ground, without leaving tall stumps. The cut shoots need to be burned. The method of covering raspberries is the same. In the photo below, the gardener made a mistake. Try to define it.

Important! Before sheltering for the winter, the raspberry bed is well watered.

The Orange Miracle has a lot of sharp thorns, but I will still grow it. It’s hard to refuse such tasty and aromatic berries. Last year I collected almost 6 kilograms of bright orange fruits from one bush.

The fruits of the Orange miracle stand out with their amazing caramel taste. When picked, the berries do not fall apart. They keep in the refrigerator for several days. For the winter, in addition to jam and compotes, I dry and freeze orange berries. You get it in winter and it seems like summer has returned.

  1. I planted Orange Miracle in the spring. It’s already cold now, there’s not much frost at night. And berries appeared on the bushes. What to do? Cut to the ground?

    1. Good afternoon, Galina!
Unfortunately, shoots with berries that appear need to be pruned. They will not have time to ripen, and you need to prepare the raspberries for winter: prune, feed, mulch. The shoots of remontant raspberries are pruned almost to zero. You need to leave no more than 1-1.5 cm.

    1. Good afternoon, Nina!
Both Orange Miracle and Hussar need to be pruned for the winter. In remontant varieties, only the rhizomes overwinter. Both varieties can be propagated by cuttings and root shoots.
Remontant raspberry varieties should be propagated by cuttings as follows.
To obtain full-fledged seedlings, you can use trimmed shoots, which must be cut so that each cutting has at least 2-3 buds. The cuttings should be planted in the substrate and watered as the soil dries. The root system is formed in 2-3 weeks. As soon as the seedlings get stronger, they can be transplanted into open ground to a permanent place. In autumn, it is advisable to grow cuttings at home.
Raspberries should be propagated by root shoots as follows. When young shoots appear near a planted raspberry bush, you need to wait until they grow to 4-5 leaves. Carefully dig up the soil near the shoots and, with a clean tool, cut off the root connecting the young shoot to the mother bush. The seedling separated in this way can be transplanted to a permanent place.
You can also propagate Orange Miracle and Hussar by apical layering. To do this, carefully pin the top of the shoot to the ground. After 2-3 weeks it will be immediately clear whether the escape has begun. If everything is in order and signs of rooting appear, you need to wait until 2-3 leaves appear on the young shoots, cut off the tops near the ground and transplant the seedlings to a permanent place.
It is not recommended to propagate varietal raspberries by seeds, since young shoots most often do not retain the characteristics of the original variety. It is very difficult to predict what will happen in the end.
We hope our tips will help you.
