Raspberry Lyachka is a fruit and berry subshrub bred by Polish breeders in 2006. Subsequently, the variety spread to European countries, Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus. This raspberry variety is called after the Polish city of the same name, Laška. In the languages of different countries it sounds like Lyachka, Lyashka, Lashka, in accordance with the local dialect. Regardless of how this word is pronounced correctly, Lyachka raspberries have earned popularity among gardeners not only in European countries; many Russian gardeners also grow them in their gardens, and farmers grow them in large berry-growing areas.
Characteristics of the variety
Raspberries are the favorite berry of many people, and for those who grow them in their garden, they are one of the sources of inspiration. The excellent taste of raspberries and the beauty of the plant delight gardeners, give them strength, and inspire them to try new varieties of berry bushes. Raspberry Lyachka-Pole will undoubtedly win your hearts and will not leave you indifferent to her charms.
Description
Raspberry Lyachka belongs to the genus Rubus of the Rosaceae family; it is a subshrub cultivated for cultivation in private gardens, on farm plots and on the territories of agricultural firms to obtain a harvest of berries with its subsequent sale. Raspberry fruits are used fresh or for winter preparations.
Raspberry Lyachka has certain properties expressed by the following indicators:
- raspberry roots are superficial, up to 0.6 m deep, fibrous, intertwined in the form of a ball, the perennial rhizome has many appendages from which one- and two-year-old shoots grow, the shoots do not spread to a great distance from the bush;
- Lyachka raspberry stems are erect, strong, reach a height of 2.5 m, first-year shoots are green, covered with thorns (unlike other varieties, they are softer), second-year shoots are brown, woody, after the end of fruiting they dry out and must be removed from bush;
- leaves are oval, jagged along the edges, the color of Lyachka raspberry leaves is rich green, the back side is whitish, on both sides the leaves are pubescent with soft hairs;
- Raspberry flowers are white (depending on the variety they may be pinkish), small up to 1 cm, collected in clusters of 6 to 12 pieces and located in the upper part of the shoots or in the axillary forks of the leaves, petals are smaller than the calyx lobes, raspberries bloom early, begin already in May-April;
- Lyachka raspberry fruits are large drupes covered with a fleshy and juicy orange-red shell. They are slightly hairy and fused into a complex fruit in the form of a ball, cylinder or hemisphere, elongated and oval at the end. Raspberries take a long time to form on biennial shoots, as they ripen at different times. Fruiting continues from early June to October.
Advantages
- Raspberry Lyachka belongs to varieties with early ripening, The fruiting period is long.With a large number of fruit-bearing bushes, agricultural firms will not have a shortage of fruits to collect; the harvest is guaranteed throughout the summer, right up to the autumn frosts. For this reason, European fruit and berry farms prefer to grow Lyachka raspberries over large areas on an industrial scale.
- Raspberry productivity is above average, from 1 hectare of berry plantation you can collect an average of 15-20 tons per season, and from one bush in the garden - up to 3-5 kg.
- Lyachka raspberries are large, The average size of a berry is 4 cm in length, the weight of one piece reaches 6-8 g. Experts rated their taste at 9 points out of 10.
- The variety is highly resistant to fungal diseases, not afraid of sudden cold snaps, winter-hardy, which allows gardeners to grow Lyachka raspberries not only in the southern regions, but also in more severe climatic conditions.
- The thorns on raspberry shoots are soft and do not cause any inconvenience during harvesting.
- Raspberry Lyachka has high degree of safety during transportation, losses are minimal.
- Bushes are compact, the stems are strong and elastic, they are not afraid of strong winds and hurricanes, they bend under heavy winds and rains, but do not break.
- When caring for Lyachka raspberry plantings, no special conditions are needed; it tolerates establishment well in a new place, shading and rare drafts.
- Raspberries propagate by root shoots, less often by dividing the bush; seed propagation is not recommended. Raspberry seedlings can be planted in early spring or late summer, provided that during the current season the bushes have formed new shoots about 30-50 cm high.
Flaws
Based on all varietal indicators about the Lyachka raspberry, we can say that it has no shortcomings at all, but our meticulous gardeners still found some flaws in this variety; in their opinion, the raspberries have:
- poor tolerance to dry periods or lack of constant watering, without moisture, the plant stops forming new shoots, the process of fruit set stops, the leaves turn yellow and fall off prematurely;
- in severe frosts, some buds on raspberry shoots freeze even under a layer of snow, in such conditions they require additional insulation for the winter;
- low resistance to the pest - raspberry stem gall midge, whose caterpillars infect young shoots, autumn or spring treatment of raspberry bushes with special solutions is necessary here.
Peculiarities
We decided to separate two indicators of the varietal characteristics of Lyachk raspberries into a separate subsection, since gardeners cannot come to a common opinion - whether this is a plus or a minus:
- Experts rated the taste of Lyachka raspberries highly, but, according to some berry gardeners, they lack the inherent sweetness of all raspberry varieties, and the taste does not correspond to those stated in the description of the variety.
- The roots of the raspberry bush grow poorly and form few root shoots, which means there will be a shortage of planting material for further propagation. Others are quite happy with this; the raspberry roots do not spread throughout the entire area and do not interfere with other plantings.

Planting and care
Experienced gardeners offer two methods of planting raspberry seedlings - trench or hole. Separate planting places are necessary for those varieties that are very sensitive to lack of light or their root system grows greatly and takes up a lot of space on the site. Such seedlings are planted at a greater distance from each other (1-1.5 m). Bushes are planted in trench holes, the roots of which do not grow excessively, and they can easily tolerate slight shade. These varieties include Lyachka raspberries.
Having chosen a landing site, further work is performed in the following order:
- Dig a trench 40-60 cm deep and 50 cm wide.
- Apply fertilizers for fruit and berry crops.
- Mix them with soil, water in the amount of 1-2 buckets per 1 meter of trench.
- After the soil settles a little and the water is completely absorbed into the ground, spread the seedlings along the trench after 40-50 cm.
- Gradually cover each seedling with loose soil, holding it in an upright position.
- Compact the soil around the seedlings, water with water (2 liters for each sprout).
- Mulch the trench with straw, chopped tree bark or peat.
Lyachka raspberries can be planted both in spring (April-May) and autumn, starting from the end of summer (August-October). The upper part of young raspberry seedlings is immediately cut off to 1/3 of the height of the sprout.When planting in autumn, young shoots are additionally insulated for the winter. For this purpose, use a thick layer of straw or reeds, which can become an excellent mulching material in the spring.
The set of measures for caring for Lyachka raspberries is the same as for all berry bushes:
- watering if necessary (no rain for a long time);
- feeding organic matter in the fall and complex chemical fertilizers in the spring, plus 2-3 times per season additional fertilizing to enhance growth and increase productivity;
- pest control, disease control (if there are symptoms), loosening and removal of large weed.
Experience in growing raspberries comes with time; not every novice gardener is able to independently grow and completely preserve his Lyachka raspberry plantings. Here we have posted several reviews from young gardeners who have already learned from their own experience how to grow it.
