Raspberry Shy

Perhaps, among the many varieties of raspberries, the most popular among gardeners are those bred by the master of raspberry growing, the famous breeder I.V. Kazakov. His contribution to the development of domestic breeding is truly invaluable. Many varieties that he bred back in the distant 70-80s of the last century are still able to compete in many characteristics with modern foreign and Russian raspberry varieties. For example, the Skromnitsa raspberry is mentioned by Kazakov himself in the list of the best varieties of medium ripening. She has many advantages, although she is not without her shortcomings. You can find a description of the Skromnitsa raspberry variety with photos and reviews from those who grew it on their plots in this article.

History of creation and description of the variety

At the end of the 70s, a group of breeders from the Kokinsky strong point, located near Bryansk, under the leadership of I.V. Kazakova developed the Skromnitsa raspberry variety by crossing two varieties: Ottawa and Bulgarian Rubin. Back in 1982, the variety was accepted for state variety testing, and only almost 10 years later, in 1990, it was included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia. This raspberry variety is distinguished by the fact that it was recommended for cultivation in most regions of Russia:

  • Northwestern;
  • Central;
  • Volgo-Vyatka;
  • Central Black Earth;
  • North Caucasus;
  • Middle Volga;
  • West Siberian.

This became possible due to the fact that raspberries are distinguished, on the one hand, by their high winter hardiness, which allows them to be grown in the north. Good drought resistance, on the other hand, is favorable for growing Skromnitsa raspberries in the hot and dry conditions of the southern regions.

Comment! Raspberry Skromnitsa, as mentioned above, belongs to varieties of medium ripening periods - the berries begin to ripen from the beginning of July (in the south) until the second ten days of July (in the middle zone).

The bushes are formed very well - they have an average growth force (they reach a height of no more than two meters), they branch well, but at the same time they are not spread wide in different directions. The shoots tend to grow straight. The great advantage of the Skromnitsa raspberry variety is the almost complete absence of thorns on the shoots. Only in the very lower part of the shoots are medium-length, non-thorny, greenish thorns observed.

The shoots of the Skromnitsa raspberry are also covered with an intense waxy coating, which can prevent excessive evaporation of moisture, due to which the bushes are characterized by increased drought resistance.

During the season, from 7 to 10 shoots are formed on the bush. This is also very convenient, since the raspberries do not scatter much to the sides, and it is quite possible to collect a sufficient amount of planting material for propagation.

On average, you can collect about 2.2 kg of raspberries from one bush. Under favorable conditions, the maximum yield per bush was 3 kg. The yield may not be the most outstanding, but it is stable from year to year. You can also note the rapid ripening of the berries, which are harvested literally in one or two times.During industrial cultivation, the yield of Skromnitsa raspberries ranges from 80-90 to 120 centners of fruit per hectare.

As for disease resistance, the Shy raspberry is not at all affected by one of the most common raspberry diseases - anthracnose. It also shows high resistance to raspberry mites, but can suffer greatly from spider mites.

Important! Susceptibility to gray rot is quite high, so preventive treatment of bushes is desirable.

But raspberries of this variety can survive snowless winters and frequent thaws quite calmly due to the fact that the bark at the base of the shoots has good resistance to damping off.

It has already been said about the frost resistance of the variety; we can only add that in almost all of the regions of Russia listed above, raspberries of the Skromnitsa variety can be grown without shelter for the winter.

Raspberries of this variety are also known for their drought resistance, so even without special watering, there will still be berries on the bushes. But to obtain maximum yield, it is still better not to torture the bushes if possible and to water them abundantly, especially during the period of flowering and fruit formation. In this case, the return will also be good.

Characteristics of berries

Berries of the Skromnitsa variety are distinguished by the following characteristics:

  • The fruits have a standard round-conical shape;
  • The size of the berries is small - the weight of one berry varies between 2-4 grams;
  • The color of the fruit is also standard – pink-raspberry;
  • Separability of berries from the fruit stalk is average;
  • Taste qualities are rated 4.2 points, the berry has a dessert taste, with a slight sourness;
  • The berries have no aroma;
  • The fruits contain 8.8% sugars, 22 mg/100g ascorbic acid;
  • The berries have a high density, do not wrinkle or flow during storage - they are easily transported;
  • The purpose of the berries is universal - they make tasty and healthy compotes, preserves, jams and other preparations.
Advice! The berries can be frozen, as they hold their shape well after defrosting.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Raspberries of the Skromnitsa variety have many advantages that have allowed them to enjoy popularity in many regions of our country for several decades.

  • The Skromnitsa raspberry variety is suitable for mechanized harvesting under industrial growing conditions.
  • The absence of thorns makes caring for raspberries and harvesting berries very convenient.
  • High transportability of berries and their excellent presentation.
  • Winter hardiness, damping resistance and drought resistance.
  • Complete immunity to anthracnose.

Among the disadvantages of the variety, one can note its susceptibility to gray rot and spider mites.

Reviews from gardeners

Raspberry Skromnitsa evokes positive reviews from all owners of personal plots where it grows, primarily due to its unpretentiousness and stable fruiting.

Vladimir, 59 years old, Lipetsk region
In recent years, many gardeners have been chasing new products and trying to plant as many different varieties of garden crops on their plots as possible in an attempt to get a bountiful and constant harvest. As for raspberries, large-fruited and remontant varieties have become fashionable. But not everyone knows that such varieties require full and competent care in order to get the desired harvest from them. I have been growing raspberries for more than 30 years, and during this time several hundred varieties have passed through my hands.Among them there are those that, without proper regular care, quickly thicken, the berries are crushed, and the bushes can completely leave you without a harvest. There are also varieties that are so easy to care for that even bushes left unattended are guaranteed to supply you with raspberries every year. Raspberries Skromnitsa also belong to these varieties. Yes, its berries are small and there are more attractive ones, but its yield is quite acceptable, it is resistant to diseases, it does not require regular watering and it will grow and delight you with its berries even in areas where raspberries are usually grown under shelters .
Olga, 45 years old, Bryansk
The Skromnitsa raspberry has been growing on my plot for more than 10 years - my mother planted it. I never bothered with bending it down and covering it for the winter; it always grew on its own. I only watered it sometimes during the hot periods of summer, and occasionally threw various plant residues on top of the roots - usually in the fall. Of course, after fruiting, I made sure to cut off all the shoots that had berries this summer. There was no more care for her. And Skromnitsa delights me and my family every year with her rather large and tasty berries. They are well collected and stored. Its productivity completely satisfies me. It doesn't grow much either. I dug up cuttings a couple of times and gave them to friends and acquaintances. The only drawback is that if you delay picking the berries, they may fall off, so this process needs to be controlled.
Valentina, 49 years old, Tomsk
Not everyone can grow good raspberries in our area.So I tried several new products, but all of them did not correspond well to their characteristics, and in particularly frosty years they froze completely. They advised me to purchase the Skromnitsa raspberry variety because of its frost resistance and, in general, unpretentiousness. We tried the berries already in the first year - beautiful and tasty. It has been growing here for three years now - so far it has survived the winters quite successfully. I didn’t even cover it, I just threw more plant debris into the root zone in the fall, and in the spring I cut off the slightly frozen tops of the shoots. The variety is really very unpretentious - I recommend it to all working summer residents who have little time to dig in the garden.

Conclusion

Raspberry Skromnitsa does not have outstanding characteristics, so if your goal is to surprise your neighbors and friends, then look for some other more suitable variety. But for gardeners who, for various reasons, cannot pay much attention to their plant pets, this raspberry will be an excellent choice. Even in the most unfavorable years, you most likely will not be left without a raspberry harvest.
