Raspberry Glen Fine

Scottish breeder Nikki Jennings created a whole series of raspberry varieties under the common name Glen. From a distance, all the plants look like a raspberry tree strewn with large berries.

Raspberry Glen Fine is a real find, because the plant can be grown not only in summer cottages, but also on a large scale in open and protected ground. The Fine raspberry variety has already managed to distinguish itself: since 2009, its berries have been recognized as the most delicious, and in 2010 it won a prize in terms of yield.

Description of the variety

To understand what the new Glen Fine raspberry variety is, you need to get acquainted with the description of the bush and berries. This will help you understand whether this plant is yours or not.

Features of the bush

Raspberry Glen variety Fine has a powerful root system, and the adventitious roots are shallow. In loose soil they can penetrate to a depth of 40-60 cm, in denser soils only 10-15 cm.

It is on the lateral roots, located horizontally, that growth buds are formed, from which new raspberry shoots grow. If there are a large number of shoots, some must be destroyed during the summer, leaving only replacement ones.

Glen Fyne raspberries are tall and, when favorable conditions are created and agrotechnical standards are met, reach 2.5 meters. Each replacement shoot lives for 2 years.In the first year, by autumn, fruit buds form on it, and the next year after wintering, raspberries bear fruit on replacement shoots. Moreover, the largest number of berries, according to reviews from gardeners and the photos presented, are collected on the middle part of the stem.

Flowers and fruits

Glen Fine raspberries begin to bloom in June. The flowers are bisexual, so the berry set is excellent. The fruits are red, elongated. The weight of one berry of the variety is 5-6 grams. There are also larger specimens up to 10 grams. Glen Fyne raspberries bear fruit for a long time, so the harvest is harvested over several periods.

Ripe berries stay well on the bush and do not lose their taste for about five days. This characteristic of the variety is especially popular with summer residents who do not have the opportunity to visit the site every day.

In addition to high yield, up to 30 kg per square meter, Glen Fine raspberries are distinguished by their sweet taste and exquisite aroma.

Characteristic

Already from the description of the Glen Fine raspberry variety one can judge the uniqueness of the plant created by Scottish breeders.

The plant also has very attractive characteristics:

  • Medium-early ripening variety, without thorns. Glen Fine raspberries are superior to the variety at the beginning of ripening Emple from the same series for three days.
  • Can be grown both in regular beds and in a greenhouse.
  • The variety is high-yielding and recommended for cultivation on a large scale.
  • Glen Fine raspberries are frost-resistant and not afraid of drought.
  • The plants are tall, up to 2-2.5 meters; thanks to the powerful and strong shoots, they do not need to be tied up.
  • Raspberry shoots are formed enough to propagate the Fine variety; anything that is unnecessary must be removed.
  • In the southern regions, remontancy may occur, so at the end of August flowers and ovaries appear on the tops of fruiting shoots.
  • Glen Fine raspberries are resistant to many viral diseases of the crop.

If we talk about the disadvantages of the variety, it is sensitivity to certain diseases:

  • root rot;
  • late blight;
  • powdery mildew.
Attention! Dwarfism may also occur.

Raspberries from the Glen series - varieties Emple and Fine:

Features of reproduction

Judging by the reviews, the Glen Fine raspberry variety is propagated mainly by root suckers. It is best to transplant young shoots to a new place where representatives of the crop, as well as potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants, have not grown before. The soil for raspberries is well flavored with organic matter, dug up, removing the roots weed.

Glen Fine raspberries can be propagated in spring, summer or autumn, depending on your convenience. To ensure that plants transplanted to a new location experience less stress, it is advisable to schedule the work to coincide with cloudy, or even better, rainy weather.

When planting, you must follow these requirements:

  1. Select an annual shoot from a healthy bush of the Glen Fine variety, slightly the thickness of a pencil.
  2. The upper part of the shoot is cut off by 2/3 to prevent fruiting. 3-4 buds are left on a 10 cm long seedling.
  3. The Glen Fyne variety can be planted in a trench or in a nesting method. When planting in trenches, raspberry seedlings are placed in increments of up to 50 cm. 2-3 annual root shoots can be planted in the nests.
  4. Raspberry roots are buried 5 cm, but the root collar should be above the surface.
  5. The soil is trampled down and filled with water. As a rule, when planting one shoot, half a bucket of water is needed.

In the photo below you can see how to plant raspberries correctly.

The soil around the planted Glen Fyne raspberries is mulched with fresh grass, straw, peat, sawdust, and rotted manure. The harvest can be expected next summer.

Advice! When using sawdust as mulch, never use fresh sawdust, as it acidifies the soil.

How to care

Judging by the description, characteristics and reviews of gardeners, Glen Fyne raspberries are unpretentious in care. Beginners can grow it if they know the basics of agricultural technology for this crop. In principle, the work boils down to the following procedures:

  • watering;
  • weeding;
  • loosening;
  • feeding;
  • tying up bushes;
  • removal of excess growth during the growing season.

We will tell you in detail about some types of care for Glen Fine raspberries.

Features of watering

After planting, the seedlings are watered only on the fifth day. Mature plants as the topsoil dries out. It should be noted that Glen Fyne raspberries are a drought-resistant plant, but it is not recommended to overdry the plantings. This can lead to the death of the shoots of the variety.

Although it is the resistance of plants to drought that summer residents like, since a week after abundant watering, raspberries feel good. To retain moisture and simplify planting care (loosening and weeding), it is best to mulch the soil under raspberries.

Top dressing

Glen Fine raspberry plantings need to be fed every year. The fact is that high yields weaken the root system, which will negatively affect fruiting next year.

Raspberries are fed starting in spring and continue to be fed throughout the summer. The variety is fertilized for the last time in the fall after harvesting for a good wintering.

For fertilizing, use mineral (potassium salt, superphosphate) or organic fertilizers.Fine raspberry bushes respond well to mullein, which is diluted 1:6, and bird droppings - 1:15. Green fertilizer from fermented grass will also not be superfluous. In addition, raspberries are fed with dry wood ash or an infusion from it. The fact is that this waste from burning wood contains a huge amount of macro and microelements.

Other care items

Glen Fine raspberry shoots are long. If winds often blow in the region, then it is advisable to tie them to the trellis in two places at different heights.

You need to immediately decide on replacement shoots. Only a few pieces are left in the garden; the rest must be removed so that they do not draw nutrients onto themselves.

Enemies of the variety

Based on its characteristics, the Glen Fyne variety is resistant to many raspberry diseases. But it is not always possible to get rid of leaf spot and anthracnose. It is best to carry out preventive treatment with Bordeaux mixture in early spring, again after 14 days. Last spraying after picking berries.

Among the pests that cause great damage to the Glen Fine raspberry variety are:

  • nematodes that devour the root system;
  • Another enemy is the crimson weevil. It destroys not only leaves, but also flowers, ovaries and ripening berries;
  • Gall midges often settle inside the shoots - a small mosquito that leads raspberry bushes to death.

You can try to destroy the nematode and weevil with a soap solution and spraying the raspberries with an ash extract. As for the gall midge, the plants are treated with Karbofos. Don't wait for pests to multiply. It is better to prevent them by carrying out preventive treatments of Glen Fyne raspberry plantations in the spring, and then several more times during the growing season.

Digging the soil and adding wood ash helps get rid of mosquitoes.

Wintering

Glen Fine raspberries should go into winter healthy and well-fed. Only in this case will the plants delight you with an excellent harvest of large red berries next summer.

Activities to prepare raspberries for winter:

  1. Pruning shoots that bear fruit and first-year shoots that show signs of disease.
  2. Processing raspberry bushes and soil with Bordeaux mixture against various pathogens.
  3. Fertilizing raspberries with mineral or organic fertilizers. Experienced gardeners in reviews recommend feeding Glen Fine raspberries with manure or wood ash. It is quite capable of replacing potash fertilizers.
  4. Abundant watering immediately after fertilizing.
  5. Bending down shoots while the temperature is above zero.
  6. When temperatures drop, it is necessary to organize shelter for the winter. First, cover with non-woven material so that there are no problems in the spring. You can use spruce branches, black soil or peat for cover on top. The ends of the shelter are left open.
  7. If mice rule the region in winter, poison is laid out. Complete cover of plantings is carried out when the temperature drops to 8-10 degrees.
  8. As soon as snow begins to fall, it needs to be thrown onto the ridges with raspberries.

Gardeners' opinion

Victor, 59 years old, Novosibirsk
I have two varieties of Glen raspberries growing on my site - Fine and Koe. The first variety has black berries, the other - red. I want to say right away that both plants are excellent in all respects: unpretentious, tasty, productive. I want to plant at least one more raspberry from this series, but I can’t find seedlings yet.
Veronica, 28 years old, Ryazan
I got a dacha five years ago. My neighbor gave me different varieties of raspberries. I really liked the Glen Fine raspberries.Fruits early, the berries are large, juicy, moderately sweet. My kids, when they get to the dacha, immediately go to the raspberry garden. And what a delicious jam it turns out, you'll lick your fingers. The convenience of the variety also lies in the fact that after working with it on the weekend, you don’t have to worry: it won’t die from drought and the ripe berries won’t fall to the ground. I advise everyone!
