Lily Exotic Sun was developed quite recently - a little over 20 years ago. Despite the fact that the ornamental crop has a very short history, the flower is popular with many gardeners. Luxurious lily buds on tall stems attract attention with their unusual beauty. At the same time, the crop is adapted to cultivation in different regions, easily adapting to new conditions.
History of selection
The giant lily Exotic Sun belongs to the category of OT hybrids (orienpets). These plant varieties are the result of crossing the eastern and trumpet varieties of the flower. Exotic Sun was bred by Dutch breeders from the company Vletter & den Haan. Despite the fact that the lily variety is already more than two decades old, it has not been included in the State Register of Russia.
Description of the Exotic Sun lily with photo
Exotic San is a perennial flower crop. Depending on the area and growing conditions, the height of fairly strong shoots reaches 80-150 cm. Large, long leaves are located on green single stems with longitudinal stripes of a brown tint.
Exotic Sun is a bulbous crop. The fibrous root is well developed. In adult specimens, the tubers are 12 cm in diameter.
Features of flowering
9-15 buds are formed on one lily peduncle. The diameter of each terry cup reaches 20 cm. Exotic San flowers have a rich lemon hue. The petals are corrugated, the long stamens are powdered with burgundy pollen. The aroma of flowers is subtle and sweet, with a long trail.
Lily is a variety with a medium flowering period. The first buds form in mid-summer. At the end of August, the last flowers appear, completing the growing season. As a rule, the older the bush, the more abundant buds are formed on it.
Advantages and disadvantages
The unique beauty of the Exotic Sun lily is the most significant advantage of the decorative culture.
Pros:
- pleasant pronounced aroma;
- high level of frost resistance;
- good immunity to harmful microorganisms;
- resistance of flowers to strong winds and heavy rains;
- the possibility of reproduction by children and bulbous scales;
- long shelf life of cut flowers.
Minuses
- loss of decorativeness when grown in northern and eastern regions with short summers;
- the need to cover the root circle to protect it from overheating in summer and from freezing in winter;
- Rodents can damage the bulbs.
Landing rules
For the growth and formation of Exotic Sun lily buds, it is necessary to create comfortable conditions. The culture fully develops in a well-lit area, protected from the wind. The soil must be drained and nutritious. If the soil is dense and clayey, then the structure is improved by adding coarse river sand.
The optimal time for planting the crop is early autumn. In the southern regions, the procedure will be organized towards the end of October. It takes 2-3 weeks for the bulbs to root before the onset of cold weather. Before planting, the soil on the site is dug up and fertilized with humus or compost. You can level the pH level by adding wood ash and ground chalk. For rooting and full development of the plant, it is advisable to fertilize the soil with superphosphate or potassium sulfate. The landing process is organized according to the following algorithm:
- Dig holes 20-25 cm deep.
- Drainage made of sand and small sawdust is laid at the bottom.
- Place the bulbs in the hole bottom down, making sure that the roots are straightened.
- The plantings are sprinkled with sand and the bulbs are buried. The place is watered abundantly and mulched with peat.
Exotic Sun planted in the fall does not require significant time investment in care. The only thing a lily needs in the pre-winter period is shelter for the cold season. After planting in the spring, plants need proper care.
Care instructions
Caring for the Exotic Sun lily is easy. To make the flower garden look well-groomed, it is necessary to carry out agrotechnical procedures in a timely manner:
- Water as needed, in moderation. In hot weather, irrigation should be more frequent and abundant.
- Tie up stems before flowering
- Remove dried buds.
- Adult plants should be fertilized at least three times per season.
Feeding is carried out according to the scheme. The first procedure involves the use of ammonium nitrate. When forming buds, superphosphate or calcium sulfide is used; at the flowering stage, potassium-phosphorus complexes are used.
For the winter, lily plantings in the middle zone and northeastern regions are covered. For a successful winter, a number of events are organized:
- Trim and carefully twist the stems.
- Mulch the flower garden with sawdust, peat, straw, forming a layer of 5-7 cm.
- Cover the plantings with a layer of snow.
In spring, the shelter is removed in a timely manner. This is necessary to prevent rotting of the bulbs and roots of the plant.
Reproduction methods
Several methods are used to spread this lily variety. The choice of method depends on the experience of the gardener:
- Planting with bulbs is possible. Healthy material is fleshy, with tightly fitting scales. Exotic Sun's bulbs are large, reaching a diameter of 12 cm.
- Lily tubers are also used for propagation. When planting, choose healthy material, without defects, gray in color. Sometimes the tubers may have a yellowish tint.
- Flowers can be propagated using bulbs that form in the axils of the leaves. The plants obtained in this way retain high varietal characteristics.
Agrotechnicians recommend replanting this variety of lily every five years. Staying flowers in one place leads to thickening of plantings and weakening of shoots.
Conclusion
Lily Exotic Sun is an excellent decoration for the site. Large double inflorescences of an unusual lemon shade encourage florists to breed a crop with high decorative qualities. The good condition of the daylily is due to the correct choice of site and timely implementation of agrotechnical operations.
