Rose Olivia Rose Austin

English roses - a relatively new variety of these garden flowers. The first “Englishwoman” only recently celebrated her half-century anniversary.

The author and founder of this beauty is D. Austin, an ordinary farmer from England. He was inspired to develop a new series of flowers by the sight of ancient French varieties of roses. He decided to develop a new variety that would look like ancient plants, but was distinguished by a strong smell and a beautiful bush shape. The heroine of today's article is Olivia Rose Austin.

The result of crossing an ancient Gallic variety with modern floribundas gave absolutely stunning success. Further hybridizations turned out to be only minor refinements of the result obtained initially. Subsequent work was aimed at obtaining re-flowering plants and strengthening the immune system.

Attention! Today, the hallmarks of English varieties are disease resistance and a strong “fruity” aroma, before which even some perfumes pale.

“English women” have recently begun to appear on the Russian market. The reason is that Austin's company is very careful about how their pets will feel in a cold, harshly continental climate. After all, these flowers cannot be called frost-resistant. But experienced gardeners successfully acclimatize unusual varieties: they are very beautiful!

Description

This magnificent variety is considered by many experts to be the best in the Austin constellation.

Comment! Rose got its name in honor of the granddaughter of the founder of the company.

In 2014, the variety received high praise at the exhibition in Chelsea (2014, May). The variety was released in 2005. Roses belong to the “shrub” category (landscape, park). Perfect for planting on lawns and flower beds. A trimmed bush can be given a wide variety of shapes. The diameter of the flowers is from 7 to 8 cm. Like the vast majority of English varieties, the flowers are cup-shaped. The rose is characterized by increased terry. The color is very beautiful, light pink. When the rosette opens completely, the middle of a yellow-golden hue is noticeable. The flowers have a strong, fruity aroma.

Important! Unlike most re-bloomers Austin roses, the variety blooms not in two, but in three stages, literally until the first frost.

The foliage is bright, dark in color, glossy. It creates a wonderful background for the most delicate flowers. Young leaves have a brownish-burgundy tint. The bush is almost spherical, beautifully formed. Its height is 1 m, width 0.75 m. The bush is formed by strong branches, each of which ends with a single flower. The variety has good immunity and is resistant to diseases. Many gardeners note that, unlike most “English” flowers, this variety tolerates harsh winters well.

Features of care

Olivia Rose Austin prefers fertile soils with neutral reactions, saturated with beneficial minerals and organic substances. A necessary condition is drainage.

  1. It is better to choose a site for roses that is well lit and not too windy. The planting pit is prepared so that its dimensions are commensurate with the root system of the plant. After planting, the rose bush should be watered well. Container roses do not need immediate feeding, since the soil has plenty of fertilizers. Another feeding will be required in the summer.
  2. Watering frequency: 1-2 times a week in small portions so that the soil is well saturated with water. In this case, it is not the bush itself that is watered, but the soil. In a dry summer, the rose will respond to the diligent gardener with gorgeous flowers.
  3. Complex fertilizers are used. The frequency of fertilizing roses is once every two weeks. This variety also loves rotten organic fertilizers as mulch. It promotes longer retention of moisture in the soil and is a source of substances beneficial to the plant.

Pruning is the most important aspect of caring for all the “husks”, as they grow quite strongly. By winter, the rose is cut to about 60% in height, carefully hilled and covered. In this case, you need to pay attention to ensure that there is air access to the plant. If this rule is neglected, there is a risk of fungal infections and putrefactive diseases. Before covering the roses, you need to carefully collect all the foliage. It is advisable to treat the soil with an antifungal agent. All this work must be carried out before the onset of stable frosts.

Warning! Cannot be used for hilling rose bushes fallen leaves, as they can be a source of fungal microspores.

Roses can be propagated by dividing bushes, seeds and cuttings.

Application

The Olivia Rose variety is distinguished by its versatility in use. Roses can be planted both in open and closed ground. It looks great both in a flower bed and as a hedge. This wonderful plant is also grown in containers. At the same time, the rose gets along well with any architectural styles and with a variety of landscape design solutions.

I purchased the Olivia Rose variety of English roses to add to my collection of “English roses.” Now I can’t imagine my rose garden without this beauty. The plant is original and beautiful. At the same time, it is incredibly winter-hardy. As for care, there are no special problems either. There are no more whims than other varieties of roses.

The variety from the Austin series “Olivia” struck me with its beauty and unusualness. The color is luxurious pink, the core is yellowish, like melted butter. The smell is simply wonderful. However, like the entire Austen series. The rosette is very beautiful. I have only seen such a terry pompom on dahlias. At the same time, the rosette is perfectly formed, neat and holds even on old flowers. In general, a real “medieval” rose for a beautiful lady. Looks great both on the site and as a cut.
