Climbing rose Laguna (Blue Lagoon): photo and description, reviews

Rose climbing Laguna is gaining popularity in landscape design as a plant for decorating gazebos, walls and arches. Its popularity is promoted not only by beautiful flowers, but also by its unpretentiousness.

History of selection

The flower culture was bred by Wilhelm Cordes and Sons from Germany. The company has been breeding and creating roses since the end of the 19th century. Their main activity is the hybridization of existing varieties in order to obtain beautiful and unpretentious new varieties. They produce up to 50 thousand hybrids per year. But only 4-6 varieties pass commercial “tests”.

The company received the Laguna climbing rose back in 1995. But since the verification period is 8-10 years, the first mention of the variety appeared only in 2004. At the same time, the company received the rights of the originator to Laguna. True, it is unknown whether this hybrid is included in the Russian State Register, or whether it has not yet received official recognition in the Russian Federation.

The company developed this climbing rose by crossing La Sevillana and Sympathy.Moreover, the first mother variety is a bush variety, the second is a climbing variety.

Rose La Sevillana was registered in 1978, bred by hybridizing 6 other varieties at once, the originator is Marie-Louise Meyland from France

The climbing large-flowered rose Sympathy was bred in Germany in 1964 by Reimer Cordes, it is a hybrid of the varieties Wilhelm Hansmann and Don Juan

Description and characteristics of the climbing rose variety Laguna

Company "V. Kordes and Sons specializes in breeding unpretentious hybrids that do not require special care and growing conditions. Laguna is no different from other varieties of this company. True, it must be taken into account that its unpretentiousness is indicated for the climatic conditions of Germany. Russian gardeners note the not very good winter hardiness of this climbing rose.

Characteristics:

  • the bush grows up to 3 m;
  • maximum diameter - 1 m;
  • flowers are collected in brushes of 8 pieces each;
  • it is stated that Laguna can withstand frosts down to - 35 ° C;
  • leaves are dense, dark green in color with a glossy sheen;
  • flowers with a diameter of 10 cm;
  • dark pink tone;
  • the total number of petals in each flower is 50;
  • the texture of the petals and buds is silky;
  • Laguna blooms throughout the warm season until autumn frosts in 2 waves;
  • the abundance of flowering determines the age of the bush.

The second wave of flowering is not inferior in intensity to the first.

Based on the climbing rose Laguna, two more varieties were developed relatively recently: Blue Lagoon and Sweet Lagoon

Blue Lagoon

The main difference between this climbing rose and the mother variety is the shade of the petals. They are able to change their color depending on the age of the flower. They are originally purple. Mature roses acquire a light purple hue.Semi-double flowers are smaller than those of the mother variety and have fewer petals.

The original Lagoon is “equipped” with good protection: it has very thorny stems. But Blue "distinguished herself" here too. It has even more curved spines.

It's better not to try to pick Laguna flowers with your bare hands.

Sweet Lagoon

A completely new variety, released in 2012. She retained all the advantages of the mother variety and acquired new advantages. Large double flowers have a very original aroma, which contains notes:

  • geraniums;
  • lemon;
  • patchouli;
  • many other components.

The petals of the climbing rose Sweet Lagoon, unlike the Blue and mother varieties, are pale pink

Advantages and disadvantages

The main quality that attracts gardeners to the Laguna variety is its very long flowering. Another significant advantage over other rose bushes is good frost resistance. This climbing rose can grow in zone IV, as it can withstand frosts down to -28-35 °C. Theoretically, Laguna can be grown in the gardens of Central Russia, not forgetting to cover it for the winter. But in this regard, not everything is so simple.

In addition to abundant flowering, due to which the foliage is almost invisible, and frost resistance, the Laguna climbing rose has other advantages:

  • resistance to most diseases that affect rose bushes, including black spot and powdery mildew;
  • ability to tolerate lack of moisture;
  • resistance to adverse natural conditions;
  • endurance during prolonged rains;
  • rapid growth of the bush, thanks to which garden decoration occurs with the least amount of time;
  • a rich, pleasant aroma that spreads throughout the garden in summer;
  • the petals hardly change color as the flower matures.

The disadvantages of climbing roses include a significant number of sharp and strong thorns, which make the bush difficult to care for. Less obvious disadvantages of Laguna are its low resistance to spider mites and aphids, as well as the need for winter shelter.

The photo and description of the climbing rose Laguna are very attractive, but reviews from gardeners about it are usually not very favorable. True, this is not due to the whimsical nature of the plant, but to the characteristics of its flowering. Faded roses do not fall off, but remain on the bush as brown lumps. It looks ugly, but it’s difficult to remove dead flowers: those same sharp thorns get in the way. In addition, you can remove the excess if the bush is low. When it grows to 3 meters, the mission of improving the appearance of the plant becomes almost impossible.

Reproduction methods

Climbing roses are propagated in 4 ways:

  • seeds;
  • layering;
  • cuttings;
  • vaccination.

The seeds do not germinate well and you need to buy them from a reliable store to avoid mis-grading. And then you will have to wait longer for flowers. Vaccinations are usually carried out by experienced flower growers. This is a relatively complex procedure, especially budding.

With this method, only a bud of a climbing rose is “planted” on the rootstock. There is another method of grafting: cuttings. The procedure is similar, but instead of a bud, part of the stem is used.

At the same time, it is much easier to propagate bushes by cuttings or layering. The method of propagation by cuttings is the same for plant species. It is even more convenient to get new climbing roses using layering. The stems of these varieties are thin and flexible. Without support they crawl along the ground. It is enough to deprive a couple of shoots of support and sprinkle them with earth in the middle.If you do this in the spring, you can plant the young bushes in a new location in the fall.

Layering is the most productive way of propagating climbing plants.

Laguna is propagated by layering in the same way as the other rose in the video.

Growing and caring for Blue Lagoon rose

You can plant purchased cuttings in autumn or spring. Plants planted in September or early October take root better. But if for some reason the deadlines were missed, you can buy and plant Lagoon in the spring, after the soil has warmed up to 10 °C.

The general rules for planting Laguna and other plants are the same:

  • choose a landing site;
  • prepare a hole 0.5 m deep and 60 cm in diameter;
  • fill the hole with soil;
  • inspect a seedling with bare roots and remove dead parts; if planting is planned with a lump of earth, nothing needs to be done;
  • soak the roots in a stimulant solution;
  • when planting, distribute the roots evenly over the soil in the hole and ensure that the root collar is at ground level;
  • Water the seedling generously.

But climbing roses also have their own characteristics. When preparing a hole, maintain the required distance to vertical objects: 50 cm. Be sure to install trellises next to the seedling for future shoots.

Comment! The trellis is placed at a distance of 10 cm from the wall if the rose was planted near a building.

After planting, the climbing Lagoon is cut at a height of 20-25 cm from the ground level. In the first 2 weeks, the seedling must be protected from direct sunlight.

In the absence of natural precipitation, it is necessary to water the Lagoon quite often in the first year: every 5 days. In subsequent years - once every 10 days.

Due to its abundant flowering, the Laguna climbing rose requires frequent feeding, 4-5 times per season.

Fertilize according to the following scheme:

  • in spring - nitrogen;
  • in summer - potassium and phosphorus;
  • at the end of the growing season - potassium.

Natural organic matter is added once every 2 years. It has been experimentally established that the combination of humus, mature compost and bone meal is optimal for Laguna.

Pruning is carried out in the spring, all diseased and dried shoots are removed. In autumn, flowers that do not tend to fall off on their own are removed.

For the winter, the Lagoon is covered after the air temperature drops to -7 °C. Its shoots are removed from the trellis and laid on the ground. The remaining free space is filled with spruce branches. Spunbond, fallen leaves or pine branches are placed on top. Cover everything with roofing felt and place boards on top.

Due to the unusual color of the petals, the Blue Lagoon often looks even more advantageous than its related varieties of climbing roses

Pests and diseases

The lagoon is not very resistant to physical pests: spider mites and aphids. However, there are practically no plants resistant to these parasites. Unless they come from another continent, who are not included in the diet of aphids and ticks. They protect the Lagoon with insecticides.

The climbing rose from Kordes resists powdery mildew and black mold better than many other varieties. But sometimes these diseases also develop on Laguna. The methods of dealing with them are the same as for other plants.

Climbing rose Laguna in landscape design

Climbing roses are used in landscape design to decorate homes and create flower arches or trellis hedges. The many flowers of this variety allow you to create beautiful compositions. Climbing species are often used to decorate and shade garden gazebos.

Sometimes the stems climbing along the wall of the house cover part of the window

Conclusion

The climbing rose Laguna will decorate the garden even for an inexperienced gardener.Its unpretentiousness allows it to “forgive” the mistakes of a novice gardener.

Reviews with photos about the climbing rose Blue Lagoon

Evgeniy Kolesnikov, 31 years old, Nizhyn
I planted the rose with the expectation that it would eventually cover the wall of my house. Of all the climbing options, I chose Laguna because it will bloom throughout the summer. But I found one unpleasant moment - dead flowers remain on the bush and must be removed manually. For now, my Laguna is low and I can clean it of everything unnecessary. But I expected that it would grow to at least the second floor. And because of its thorns, it is completely impossible to work with the stems by touching them. That is, later I will get a lot of ugly brown lumps on the top.
Marina Antropova, 28 years old, Yegoryevsk
I planted the climbing rose Blue Lagoon in the flowerbed. I really liked the color of its petals. But you can’t put a trellis on a flowerbed. It won't be pretty. I had to use wire. It is almost invisible, and the rose bush looks as if it is growing on its own. But I didn’t notice any abundant flowering. However, perhaps it’s the aphids. It always appears in the spring. Even shade does not bother these insects. Due to its hardiness, this climbing rose grows in the shade of trees. Although not strong.
