- 10 Reviews from flower growers about the Blush Queen peony
Of the variety of flowers represented by the flora and selection, the Blush Queen peony especially stands out. It has tricolor buds and lush foliage, thanks to which it retains its decorative appearance throughout the warm period. Adult flowers look most attractive; their stems are strong and do not fall off, and the inflorescences are so large that you have to apply a ruler to them to measure them.
History of appearance
Blush Queen is the achievement of the Dutch team Hoogendoorn. The breeding took place back in 1949, but tests were carried out for several years: the conditions in which the variety grows best were checked. The Blush Queen variety came to Russia much later, and was entered into the State Register in 1994.
Description of the milky-flowering peony Blush Queen with photo
The peony variety is quite compact, suitable for growing at home, in limited areas. Height is 85-90 cm.
On the erect stems of the culture there are green leaves, which, like other peonies, have a sword-shaped shape.
Up to 10 flowers are formed on one herbaceous shrub. They have a terry structure and look very similar to roses. The dense folding of the petals allows them to withstand the adverse effects of precipitation.
The diameter of the bud, as a rule, does not exceed 16 cm. The petals are three-colored: the background is bright white, a little higher you can see yellow and at the very top - pink. It is in this sequence that the shades are distributed across the “floors” of the flower.
Timing and duration of flowering
Peony Blush Queen has an average budding period. Under suitable conditions it blooms in early summer.
Advantages and disadvantages
Blush Queen is a frost-resistant flower with many benefits. For example, it fits perfectly into the landscape of any garden.
Pros:
- light, pleasant smell;
- interesting colors;
- pomp;
- no increased care requirements;
- easy landing;
- resistance to fungal diseases;
- drought resistance.
Minuses:
- has a negative attitude towards excess fluid;
- short flowering.
Landing scheme and rules
Before planting, you need to choose the right place. Peony Blush Queen likes light areas, hidden from drafts. A bad option, given the painful reaction to water, would be a swampy area.
Good air exchange is necessary for the development of the root system.In this regard, planting near large objects - houses, buildings, tall bushes, trees - is not carried out.
Peony Blush Queen prefers slightly acidic substrates with good throughput properties. If the soil is sandy, sand is poured into it three weeks before planting. On the contrary, clay is added to sandy soil.
Depleted areas need to be fed. To do this, dig a hole 60 x 60 cm and fill it 70% with organic (peat, rotted manure, fertile soil) and mineral (phosphate of lime, ash) substances. The fertilizer needs to be filled in and watered well. When planting the Blush Queen peony, it will be enough to dig up the previous place and fill the seedling with soil.
The formation of root shoots will occur over the course of two years, so at first the Blush Queen peony will not be able to please the gardener with flowering.
Care instructions
Peonies require moderate watering: about 10 liters of water are spent per bush weekly. The soil should be slightly moist. The rate of development is also affected by the application of fertilizers.
Sanitary pruning is carried out in spring and autumn, twice a year. Work with gloves, using sharp, sterilized instruments. The cut areas are immediately treated with garden varnish.
Blush Queen peonies do not need supports. Overall, this is an easy plant to care for.
Preparing for winter
Despite its high frost resistance, it is advisable to prepare the peony for the change of season. To do this, two procedures are carried out - cutting and mulching.
Blush Queen bushes are trimmed short (leaving small stumps above the ground).Then cover the peonies with mulch. The height of the layer is adjusted to 15 cm, and no foreign vegetation should remain on the ground - it can cause fungal infection.
Reproduction methods
Blush Queen is propagated using vegetative material, since growing seeds is difficult even for experienced gardeners. The simplest is the division method. For propagation, a peony that has undergone budding (over three years old) with a developed underground part is required.
Select cuttings that have 2-4 buds and a root shoot of at least 10 cm. Before planting, it is recommended to disinfect the peony in a solution of potassium permanganate, and then sprinkle the cut areas with crushed coal. Blush Queen is watered and mulched. Otherwise, caring for the plant does not differ from that described above.
Disease and pest control
Peony Blush Queen is resistant to most diseases. Under unfavorable conditions, the crop may become infected with root rot. It is difficult to recognize the disease in time, since the underground part of the peony is first affected. After the condition of the roots deteriorates, shoots and flowers begin to react.
Another disease is called gray mold. The diseased plant is covered with brown formations - fungal growths. To restore the Blush Queen peony, immediate treatment with the fungicide Fitosporin is required.
Alternative method to solve the problem:
- digging up the plant, washing the roots with warm water;
- treatment with a copper-containing solution;
- planting the sprayed plant in a fertile substrate.
Application in landscape
Conclusion
Peony Blush Queen is a Dutch variety bred in the middle of the last century. It came to Russia relatively recently, but the plant is popular and needs no introduction.
