If the resting place is equipped with a barbecue, then it is better to use brick for the construction of pillars.
The easiest to make are pergolas and canopies. In the first design, the roof is replaced by a lattice floor. The simplest canopy can be attached to one of the walls of the building. In this case, you will only need to install two pillars.

Semi-closed gazebos
The most popular among summer residents are semi-closed gazebos. The structure seems to have walls, but they are not solid. Wooden or wrought iron gratings are usually attached between the pillars. The lower part of the gazebo can have blank walls up to 1 m high, and above there is a window opening or lattice. Soft PVC windows are often inserted into a semi-closed gazebo or curtains are simply hung. They protect vacationers from wind and splashing rain.
Closed gazebos
Of all the types of summerhouses, the closed structure is considered the most difficult to construct. It is already a full-fledged building where you can equip a summer kitchen or pavilion.A sewerage system, water supply, and even heating are installed inside the building. They build a closed gazebo at the dacha with their own hands from brick or wood. Windows and a door must be installed in the structure.
It is optimal to install a Russian stove with a barbecue, fireplace and other accessories. In addition to being able to cook delicious food over a fire, the room will always be warm.
There are budget options for closed gazebos. The lightweight structure consists of wooden or brick pillars. The role of walls and windows is played by transparent polycarbonate sheets. With the onset of cold weather, it is difficult to warm up in such a room. The design is more intended for relaxation in the warm season. Transparent walls simply protect from rain and wind.
Deciding on the choice of form
A summerhouse can be given any shape. There are no restrictions in this. Moreover, modern materials allow this to be done. It all depends on imagination, desire and possibilities. If we look specifically at this issue, we can highlight the most common forms:
- The rectangular design is simple and at the same time difficult to build. It is easy to make a shed with a pitched roof. But it will be more difficult to build a closed rectangular structure due to the design of the hipped roof.
- The polygon is characteristic of a semi-closed gazebo. Most often the design has 6 or 8 corners.
- The round ones build rotundas. The walls are woven from wicker or covered with polycarbonate. The roof in this design is made light in order to reduce the pressure on the frame.
- Combined shaped gazebos usually consist of a polygon and a rectangle. This design allows you to divide the room into several zones.
When choosing the shape of the gazebo, you need to pay attention to the house. Even if these two buildings slightly coincide in design, at least some of their details should be in harmony.
Deciding on the size
The choice of gazebo size directly depends on the free area of the summer cottage. It is also important to take into account the internal arrangement. That is, will there be only a table under the roof or will you need space for a barbecue, countertop, etc. You immediately need to think about how many people will be relaxing. If guests often come to the dacha, then it is not cost-effective to equip a small vacation spot.
The photo shows an example with the dimensions of an average gazebo, designed for a family of 6-8 people. The lightweight gable roof made of ondulin is supported on inclined wooden posts. Inside there is a table with three benches.
If there is a lot of free space at the dacha, then the best option is a polygonal structure measuring 3x3 m. You can choose a rectangular building with an area of 6 to 12 m2. This vacation spot is suitable for a large company. Inside, in addition to furniture, a stove is installed.
The architectural ensemble of the site is in the background, but it is advisable to take this nuance into account as well. Let's say that in a small garden or near a small outbuilding a huge gazebo will look strange. If you really want to organize a large resting place, then it is better to make the building openwork and use polycarbonate for the roof.This design is practically invisible from a distance, and it will not overload the space.
In a large dacha, you can build a structure of any size. If you wish, you can even make two small gazebos at different ends of the site.
What materials are better to choose?
When you build a gazebo for your summer house with your own hands, there are no restrictions on the choice of material. The main thing is to get a reliable and beautiful design. You can use one material or a combination for construction. Most often, the second option is preferable. Let's look at the photo options for the constructed structures and find out what you can use to make a gazebo on your summer cottage:
- A wooden structure will cost the summer resident less. Due to its low weight, there is no need to concrete a strip foundation for the gazebo, but you can get by with a columnar base. The wood is easy to process and construction work can be done alone.
- A brick building is considered the most reliable. You can even use cobblestones or blocks, and then cover the pillars and walls with decorative stone. The labor costs will be high, and not everyone can afford such a project financially. For a brick building, you will need to draw up a project, as well as lay a strip foundation.
- Polycarbonate can be called a godsend for a gazebo. Transparent sheets are inexpensive for the cottage owner. For polycarbonate, you just need to build a frame from any available material. As a foundation, you can use a flat, rigid platform or concrete the main pillars of the frame.
If desired, all these materials can be combined in one design. For example, install brick pillars, secure wooden walls between them, and sew up window openings with polycarbonate.
Sequence of construction work
Now we will look in general terms at how to build a gazebo on your summer cottage. For example, let’s take the simplest and most accessible material – wood.
Making a drawing
The construction of a gazebo, even the simplest one, begins with drawing up a drawing. We will make the frame in the shape of a hexagon, and the floor will be replaced by a concrete screed. The photo shows drawings of the gazebo. You can leave these dimensions or calculate your own.
Based on the drawing, you can already calculate the required amount of building material, but it is better to buy with a small margin. Leftovers on the farm will come in handy.
Let's start construction work
Now we will look step by step at how to build a gazebo according to the proposed drawing. After clearing the area of vegetation and debris, we begin work:
- Since we are building a hexagon-shaped gazebo, we will need 6 stakes to mark the area. We drive them into the ground along the contour of the future structure where each corner will be located. We stretch the cord between the stakes. It will mark the contours of the foundation.
- Using a shovel, we remove the soil according to the markings. You should get a pit 20 cm deep.
- Pour a 10 cm layer of sand and crushed stone onto the compacted bottom. We lay waterproofing material and reinforcing mesh on top, and build formwork around the pit. Fill the base with concrete mortar so that it protrudes 10 cm from the ground.
- When the concrete hardens, we assemble the lower frame from a beam with a cross-section of 100x100 mm. We attach vertical posts to it in the corners. To strengthen the connections of wooden blanks, we use metal overhead elements. Waterproofing is placed between the wooden frame and the concrete base.
- When all the racks are installed, we make the top trim from the timber.
- We reinforce the finished frame with jumpers at a height of 1 m from the floor. In the future, wall material will be attached to them.
- Now we assemble the roof frame on the ground. First, from a board with a cross-section of 50x100 mm, we knock down a hexagonal frame according to the dimensions of the upper trim of the posts of the gazebo frame. We fasten the rafter legs at an angle from each corner so that they all converge at one point in the center of the hexagonal frame.
- We lift the finished structure with helpers onto the frame of the gazebo, after which we fix it with bolts to the beam of the upper frame.
- We nail the sheathing onto the rafter legs made of 20 mm thick boards or OSB. We use ondulin, flexible tiles or corrugated sheets as roofing materials.
- The walls are made of wooden boards or lining. We raise them to the height of the lintel - 1 m.
The finished gazebo must be treated with antiseptic impregnation. It is better to paint natural wood with varnish; this will give the structure a beautiful brownish tint.
