The Jaguar variety belongs to a hybrid form of grapes. It is characterized by a fast ripening period of 104-115 days, tallness, and decent yield. Berries can be picked in the first half of August.
Description of the Jaguar grape variety (photo):
- the bunch has a mass of 700-1500 g, forms a cylindrical shape, and has an average density;
- large, elongated berries (as in the photo), with seeds, weight 13-16 g, red-violet color, the pulp has a harmonious sweet and sour taste.
Planting seedlings
Jaguar grapes do not grow well in shaded areas. Therefore, to create a vineyard, it is preferable to choose a sunny and windy place. The optimal choice is the south side of the building or structure (house, dense fence). Since the plant is planted for many years, you need to choose a site for the vineyard carefully. The seedling is planted in the spring, and the site is prepared in advance - a week or two before planting.
Before planting seedlings, it is necessary to dig a trench to a depth of approximately 55-60 cm. The orientation for the hole is north-south. Thanks to this, in the future the Jaguar grapes will be evenly illuminated throughout the day. The length of the pit is calculated based on the number of bushes, since plants are planted every 1.5-2 m. If you plan to plant seedlings in several short rows, then strips of no more than two meters are left for row spacing.
At the same time, a trellis is built next to the pit. It is best to use metal pipes 2-2.5 m long and wire as a building material. Base pipes are driven along the trench every 2 meters. A wire is fixed along the pit in several rows. Moreover, the bottom row is located at a distance of approximately 40 cm from the ground. The next wire is pulled every 35-40 cm. It is recommended to fasten three to four rows. Special attention must be paid to fixing the wire, since the wire can bend or move under the weight of the grape bunches.
Before planting Jaguar seedlings, a nutrient mixture is poured into the bottom of the hole, calculating a bucket of mixture per meter of trench. The fertilizer is prepared in advance: a bucket of humus is mixed with 60-80 g of superphosphate and 40-50 g of potassium chloride.
Jaguar grape seedlings are lowered into a hole and buried, after carefully straightening all the roots. The final stage of planting is abundant watering of the seedlings.
Formation of the vine
Jaguar grapes are pruned the next year after planting. To form the correct shape of the bush, only the central shoot and two side shoots are left. Moreover, the central branch is fixed to the trellis vertically, and the side branches – horizontally. Subsequently, five to six shoots are left on the horizontal branches, which are fixed vertically on the trellis.
You can enjoy the first grape berries three years after planting a seedling of the Jaguar variety.
Vertical vines are pruned at a level of approximately 1.4-1.5 m. It is recommended to choose the cutting height individually - caring for the grapes should be comfortable.Young shoots must be removed regularly - the Jaguar grapes should not be allowed to thicken.
Grape propagation
To grow vines, you must keep in mind that the vegetative method is most often used. In the fall, cuttings of the Jaguar variety are cut in advance and buried in soil for the winter. Grape cuttings are planted in the spring.
Preparing for winter
It is advisable to dig up the soil under the vine - in this case, the moisture will be better absorbed and the plant will not freeze too much. In the fall, it is also recommended to prune the vines. Green shoots and fruit-bearing vines are cut off.
Jaguar grapes are considered frost-resistant, able to withstand frosts down to – 20˚ C. Therefore, in the southern and middle regions it is not necessary to specifically cover them. It is enough to carefully remove the vines from the trellis, tie them and tilt them to the ground. To prevent the vines from straightening out, they are pinned to the ground.
In more northern areas, it is recommended to make additional shelter - branches and film are placed under the tied vines. And on top the Jaguar grapes are covered with any “warm” material - sawdust, boards, straw mats.
Viticulture is very exciting, you just need a little patience and diligence. A large variety of varieties allows you to choose grapes that are suitable for growing conditions and taste.
