Dates for planting potatoes in Siberia

Siberia occupies a fairly vast area: it makes up about 57% of the territory of all of Russia. All of Siberia can be conditionally divided into Western and Eastern regions. The climatic conditions in them differ slightly, and, therefore, the timing of planting potatoes also differs.

The eastern regions are distinguished by their harsh, long winters and short but very hot summers. It is in these regions that the weather is capricious: frosts, uneven precipitation, most of which falls in late summer or early autumn.Taking into account all these factors, the planting time for potatoes in this region begins in mid-May, when the weather stabilizes a little.

But the western regions were a little luckier. Their climate is a little milder, so you can plant potatoes in Western Siberia as early as early May.

Advice! Many gardeners use folk guidelines based on various natural processes to determine planting dates.

According to these folk guidelines, you can plant potatoes only after the first buds begin to bloom on the birch tree.

Reviews

Valentina, 57 years old, Igarka
We first planted Udacha potatoes in 2000 and now we plant them every year. We do not plant them as whole potatoes, but divide them into eyes. Before planting, roll each piece in ash and plant. In the future, everything is as always: loosen, hill up and treat against the Colorado potato beetle. Every year, from 3 kilograms of planting material we get 6 bags of potatoes. We recommend.

Different varieties of potatoes were planted, but Lyubava and Udacha showed the best results. In our beds we plant them only under straw, and every year after harvesting we plant green manure in the bed. The harvests are always excellent. Both varieties store well.

We usually plant Zhukovsky early potatoes, but last year, on the advice of our neighbors, we tried to plant Lugovsky. Young potatoes of both varieties are very tasty, but Lugovsky’s slightly overripe ones seemed tastier to us. Therefore, we will now plant two varieties: one for early digging, and the other for late.
