Tomato Vova Putin: reviews and characteristics of the variety

The Vova Putin tomato, an amateur-selected variety with salad fruits, has become known to most gardeners quite recently. The plant is famous for its unpretentiousness in conditions of lowering the temperature regime usual for tomatoes and for its large fruit.

Description of the tomato variety Vova Putin

A medium-sized tomato bush with a large number of shoots that stretched in different directions, trying to break through to the light, prompted the author, Chelyabinsk experienced vegetable grower Nikolai Andreevich Aleksandrov, to call it Vova Putin, after the nickname of a village peer who was restless in childhood games. Thus, since the beginning of the 2000s, the collection of undemanding varieties of tomatoes, the seeds from which are distributed by a breeder from Chelyabinsk throughout Russia and other countries, has been replenished with a big name. The mid-early tomato variety with heavy fruits has become more famous since 2015, after publications in the press and television programs.

Tomatoes of the Vova Putin variety are not included in the State Register, but seedlings are actively planted by amateur gardeners who pass the seeds to each other along a chain or by mail.

Vova Putin tomatoes of indeterminate type.The author indicates their growth is up to 1.5 m, but many summer residents claim that plants in a greenhouse rise over 2 m. In open ground, tomatoes reach the specified height. The height of tomatoes depends on the fertility of the soil, planting pattern and lighting conditions, especially in the greenhouse. The leaves of the variety are medium in size and grow sparsely. The branches with leaves are long and often intertwined, so they must be thinned out and removed in time to prevent thickening. There are from 2-3 to 5-6 flowers on the racemes, which, with good pollination, all turn into ovaries.

Description of fruits

The tomato variety Vova Putin, as some gardeners note, is unstable in terms of shape. Tomatoes on one stem are:

  • flat-oval, as the author himself calls it, “boat”;
  • heart-shaped;
  • complex flat-rounded shape, which is often formed from the ovary on a double flower.

The ovaries first grow heart-shaped, then the lateral sides increase, creating an oval silhouette in a horizontal section. The dimensions of boat-shaped tomatoes with a weight of up to 1 kg exceed 12-15 cm in length of the fruit. Tomatoes up to 500 g also come in 10-12 cm in length. Most often, Vova Putin tomatoes are irregularly shaped, weakly or strongly ribbed. The usual weight is 200-400 g. The author of the variety notes that on the third cluster, Vova Putin tomatoes sometimes grow larger than on the lower two.

The tomato skin is thin, bright red, uniform over the entire area of the fruit. Sometimes yellow “hangers” remain on heavily ribbed tomatoes, which is a sign of the absence of certain microelements in the soil. When cut, the seed chambers are not visible, there are quite a few seeds, and they are not felt when consumed. The dense, fleshy and juicy flesh of tomatoes of the Vova Putin variety is red, almost continuous along the cut plane.The tomato taste is harmonious, pleasantly balanced between sweetness and slight acidity. It is often noted that the sugar taste predominates in the crumbly pulp of the variety.

The Vova Putin tomato variety is ideal for eating fresh fruits. The surplus is used for various preparations. The thick skin allows tomatoes to be stored in a cool place for up to 7-10 days. The ability to withstand transportation is low.

Varietal characteristics

The beginning of fruiting of the greenhouse tomato crop Vova Putin occurs in the last days of June, the beginning of July. In open ground, the fruits of the variety ripen a little later. Fruiting of tomatoes is extended, the upper clusters ripen until September, early October. The plants bear from 20 to 40-50 fruits. If standard agricultural technology requirements are met, 4 kg of fruit is harvested from a tomato bush. There are references to a harvest of up to 8 kg.

Conditions for good yield:

  • the tomato variety plant of the Ural folk selection is quite powerful, produces many stepsons, so their removal is one of the conditions for increasing the productivity of the tomato bush and earlier ripening of the set fruits;
  • to get large tomatoes, the plant is grown in 1 or 2 stems;
  • rationing of ovaries is no more than 4-5 per cluster, and for large fruits – 1-2.

The Vova Putin tomato, in accordance with the characteristics and descriptions of the variety by the gardeners who grew it, is different:

  • unpretentiousness to weather conditions;
  • drought resistance;
  • adaptability to reduced summer temperatures;
  • resistance to some fungal diseases.

The variety resists the pathogens of gray rot, even if there are bushes affected by the disease on the site. The following complex of works is used against pests:

  • preventive removal weed from the tree trunk circle, no less than 1 m;
  • insecticide treatment.
Comment! The author of the variety notes that tomatoes grow poorly in southern climates, with summer temperatures above + 28 °C.

Pros and cons of the tomato variety Vova Putin

Everyone who grew tomatoes of the Ural selection notes the advantages of the variety:

  • stable harvest;
  • large fruit;
  • high taste properties;
  • long fruiting;
  • the versatility of tomatoes;
  • minimum requirements for temperature conditions typical for the middle zone climate;
  • resistance to pathogens of certain fungal diseases.

There is an opinion that the disadvantage of the variety is the instability of the shape of the tomatoes.

Rules for planting and care

Gardeners, guided by the description of the tomato variety Vova Putin from an amateur breeder, grow plants using standard methods.

Sowing seeds for seedlings

The seeds of the variety are sown 70-75 days before transshipment to a permanent place. They buy special soil for seedlings or take their own, prepared in the fall. Typically, garden soil, humus or peat, and sand are mixed into the substrate in a ratio of 1:1:0.5. Tomato seeds treated with potassium permanganate are placed in a container with soil at room temperature to a depth of 1-1.5 cm. After 5-7 days, the seeds germinate and the sprouts are provided with sufficient lighting under special lamps. Water moderately, keeping the substrate slightly moist. Picking tomatoes is carried out by planting plants one at a time in separate containers when 2-3 true leaves appear.

Transplanting seedlings

Tomatoes are planted in film greenhouses in the middle climate zone and in the Urals in May, and in open ground even in June. Containers with tomatoes are taken out 12-15 days before planting for several hours for hardening in fresh air.Before transferring, the containers are watered generously so that the roots of the tomatoes can be easily removed along with a lump of earth. Variety Vova Putin, place 3-4 plants per 1 square meter. m.

Advice! When planting tomatoes, place 25-30 g of ammonium nitrate in the hole.

Caring for tomatoes Vova Putin

While the tomatoes are taking root, they are not watered for 4 days, then moistened regularly after 3-4 days. It is important to ventilate the greenhouse in a timely manner and keep the doors open in hot weather. In the garden, row spacing is mulched, especially in the southern regions, in order to retain moisture in the soil longer. Any weeds that take away nutrients from tomatoes and can be a secluded home for harmful insects - aphids or whiteflies - are promptly removed from the site and in the greenhouse. The plants are pruned once a week, removing shoots that have reached 4 cm. The stems and fruit clusters of the tall tomato variety Vova Putin, judging by the description, reviews and photos, are carefully tied up. In early August, the growing points of those plants that are in open ground are pinched so that the set tomatoes ripen before frost.

Important! To form large fruits, the buds in the lower racemes are pinched off, leaving only 2-3 flowers.

It is convenient to feed tomatoes with balanced ready-made complex fertilizers for the crop:

  • "Crystalon";
  • "Kemira";
  • "Ava" and others.

When the ovaries are formed, foliar fertilizing with boric acid has an effective effect on the amount of yield.

When late blight develops in damp weather, the affected plant is removed, and the tomato plantings are sprayed with Ridomil Gold, Fitosporin-M, and Quadris. There are cases when tomatoes were saved from late blight by spraying prophylactically with a solution of 10 furatsilin tablets in a bucket of water.Garlic, yarrow or tobacco will protect plants from whiteflies, and baking soda and soap will protect them from aphids.

Conclusion

The Vova Putin tomato is spreading in summer cottages and garden plots, attracting with its durability and tasty fruits. Even beginners in farming can grow this variety. Using standard agricultural technology, a good harvest of vitamin-rich homemade products is obtained.

Reviews

Irina Andreevna Bukaeva, 56 years old, Ivanovo region.
The Vova Putin variety has been growing in my greenhouse for 2 years. Very pleased, really unpretentious, disease resistant. The tomatoes are magnificent, large, sweet, with tender flesh. We eat them in salads, and the preparations are excellent. The first time I planted 4 bushes for testing, and the next time I gave the variety a whole row. The care is simple - I tie my stepson up. I feed it with chicken manure, which I let sit for a week along with herbs. The fertilizer is organic, ecological, and gives excellent results.

We grow tomatoes only in a greenhouse, the variety has shown excellent results. I received seeds from Nikolai Andreevich, sowed some of them for seedlings, and shared them with my neighbors. They are also happy with the new variety. Concerns familiar to greenhouse growers - pinching, gartering, pollination. We give mixed fertilizers, organic and mineral, as for other tomatoes. On 2 stems of each tomato, up to two dozen fruits, large and sweet, ripened. I will plant more.
