Varieties of Eastern Star peppers: Tangerine, Giant, White in Red, Red, Yellow, Chocolate

Sweet pepper is not an absolutely accessible crop for growing in most regions of Russia due to its heat-loving nature and at the same time long growing season. But what to do if many varieties, even with large sizes, do not yet have the most expressive taste, and even sometimes taste bitter? Probably try to choose a variety of bell pepper that will combine many useful characteristics, but, above all, excellent taste.

Pepper The star of the east is unique not only for its taste characteristics, but also because it is a whole series of peppers of the most diverse shades. Despite some differences in size, shape and, most importantly, color shades, all varieties of East Star peppers are distinguished by an excellent sweet taste and juiciness, which are comparable to the best southern varieties, and which are confirmed by numerous reviews from gardeners. Of course, it is unlikely that it will be possible to grow a decent harvest of these peppers in the open ground of regions with cool and short summers.But, if you have any greenhouse or greenhouse, then you can surprise your family and guests with a rare combination of beauty, taste, juiciness and, of course, usefulness that distinguishes all vegetables grown on your own plot. Well, in the south, your pepper beds will have the opportunity to sparkle with a real fireworks of colors and, with reasonable planting, can look even more picturesque than any flower bed. And your twists for the winter will not only be healthy and tasty, but also beautiful.

Description of the variety

In fact, all sweet peppers included in the Eastern Star series are hybrids. This must be remembered so as not to be disappointed after sowing seeds collected from grown pepper fruits.

Attention! That is, to grow pepper seeds next year, you need to buy them again from the manufacturer or in stores.

The series includes the following varieties:

  • Star of the East f1;
  • Red;
  • White;
  • Golden;
  • Tangerine;
  • Orange;
  • Yellow;
  • Gigantic;
  • Giant red;
  • Giant yellow;
  • Violet;
  • Chocolate.

These sweet pepper hybrids were bred by specialists from the famous seed-growing company Sedek, which is located in the Moscow region. It is also no coincidence that the sweet peppers of this series received such a romantic name - in cross section, any of the fruits resembles a star.

Not all representatives of the Eastern Star series were included in the State Register of Russia. Only 7 hybrids received this honor: Oriental Star, White, Golden, Red, Tangerine, Violet and Chocolate. This happened more than 10 years ago in 2006-2007.

The above hybrids of sweet pepper Zvezda Vostok differ not only in the color of the fruit, but also in other characteristics.The vast majority of pepper varieties in this series can be classified as early ripening hybrids - this means that on average 105-115 days pass from the emergence of seedlings to the ripening of fruits at the stage of technical maturity. At a later date (after 120-130 days), only all three giant varieties and the Chocolate Star of the East ripen.

As already mentioned, all varieties are intended for cultivation both in open ground and under shelters.

Advice! But still, in climatic zones north of Voronezh and beyond the Urals, it is preferable to grow them at least under film covers, otherwise the yield may disappoint you and the ripening period may be extended.

Pepper bushes are usually quite powerful, semi-spreading, medium in height (60-80 cm). The leaves are large, green, slightly wrinkled. In recent years, several unusual hybrids from this series have appeared - Orange and Yellow Star of the East, which belong to indeterminate species. That is, without formation, they can grow up to a meter or more. And when grown in winter heated greenhouses and formed into two stems, they can grow up to two meters in height and provide a seasonal yield of up to 18-24 kg of pepper fruits per square meter of plantings.

And for ordinary hybrids grown during one summer season, the yield varies depending on the specific variety from 5.8 to 11 kg of fruit per square meter.

Hybrids are resistant to tobacco mosaic virus and verticillium wilt. They ripen well in room conditions, being collected at the stage of technical maturity. The fruits are stored well and for a long time and are quite suitable for long-term transportation, which makes growing these peppers on farms profitable.

Varieties of Eastern Star

The Eastern Star pepper in its traditional version has a rich dark red color of the fruit. But it is interesting that at the stage of technical maturity, the cube-shaped pepper fruits have a milky cream color, as they ripen they become creamy-reddish and, finally, at the stage of full biological ripening they turn dark red.

Comment! Thus, on one bush you can simultaneously observe peppers of almost three different shades, and all of them are already quite edible and can be used for various culinary purposes.

After all, the stage of biological ripening is necessary only for the complete maturation of seeds so that they can germinate well in the next season. But,

  • firstly, the seeds can ripen well in peppers left to ripen indoors.
  • secondly, in any case, it makes no sense to plant seeds from grown hybrids next year, since they will not repeat the properties of their parents. Therefore, it makes no sense to wait for biological maturation.

And all the peppers in this series are distinguished by their amazing and variable coloring both at the stage of technical and biological maturation.

Purple

This hybrid does not have the highest yields (on average about 6-7 kg/sq. meter), but its fruits ripen relatively early and look very exotic. They turn dark purple at the stage of technical ripening, but at the stage of full maturity they become dark cherry. The walls of the peppers are average in thickness - 7 mm, the fruits are prism-shaped, weighing from 180 to 300 grams.

Chocolate

It is not for nothing that the Chocolate Star of the East pepper is mid-season in terms of ripening.Like many late varieties, it is characterized by high yield - up to 10 kg/sq. meters and fairly large fruit sizes - 270-350 grams. The color of the pepper fruits is also unique, but chocolate lovers will be disappointed - at the stage of full ripening, the peppers do not become completely chocolate, but rather dark red-brown. And during the period of technical maturity, the color of the fruit is dark green. In addition to its excellent taste, this hybrid has a distinctive peppery aroma.

Golden

This hybrid does not have particularly outstanding characteristics, except for the friendly ripening of fruits. Its yield is average - about 7.5 kg/sq. meters. The size of the fruit is also average - approximately 175-200 grams with a wall thickness of about 5-7 mm. Dark green, elastic, juicy fruits turn bright yellow when fully ripe.

White

Pepper White Star of the East becomes milky white only during the period of technical ripening. If you still leave it to ripen on the bush, the fruits will soon turn dark yellow. By the way, in this sense it is not much different from the hybrid White pepper in the yellow star of the east.

Only the White Star’s yield is slightly higher (up to 8 kg/sq. meter) and the wall thickness reaches 10 mm.

Comment! But the White in Yellow Star of the East has a more refined peppery aroma.

White in red

And in this variety of the Eastern Star, the cuboid-shaped fruits, after a period of white coloring, gradually turn red. Productivity, wall thickness and fruit size are at an average level.

Red

This hybrid differs from the traditional one in the prism-shaped shape of the fruits, and also in the fact that at the stage of technical maturity the fruits are dark green.The Red Star of the East pepper is also characterized by a weak but distinctive pepper aroma.

Tangerine

One of the most interesting varieties of this series of peppers. Productivity can reach 8-9 kg/sq.m. meters. The fruits themselves cannot be called small either; they reach a mass of 250-290 grams. After going through a dark green hue, the peppers become a rich dark orange color when fully ripe. The fruits are particularly juicy with a wall thickness of 8-10 mm and a rich peppery aroma.

Yellow

Yellow and Orange varieties of Eastern Star pepper differ from each other only in color at the stage of biological maturation, which coincides with the name of the variety. During the technical period of maturity, they are distinguished by a dark green color. Both hybrids are early ripening and have unlimited growth. Each bush can simultaneously ripen up to 15-20 fruits, weighing on average 160-180 grams. Although the weight of the largest peppers can reach 250 grams. These hybrids are most profitable to grow in heated greenhouses.

Attention! Under these conditions, they are distinguished by very long fruiting and from one bush you can collect up to 25 kg of pepper fruits per year.

Gigantic

Among the peppers of the Eastern Star series, three varieties are known with medium ripening periods and fairly large fruits, weighing up to 400 grams - Giant, Giant Red and Giant Yellow. Moreover, the first two hybrids are practically no different from each other. The latter variety, as you might guess, has fully ripened fruits that are bright yellow. During the period of technical maturity, the fruits of all three hybrids have a dark green color. The bushes grow quite tall, up to one meter. And although the size of the peppers is quite significant, these hybrids are not particularly productive.On average, from 7 to 10 fruits ripen on one bush.

Reviews

Galina, 47 years old, Moscow region
Last year I grew yellow, orange and white varieties of Eastern Star peppers, and this year I decided to try growing giants. I bought Giant Red Star seeds and planted the seedlings on warm beds in greenhouses. In general, I’m happy with the result; the peppers have grown really large and beautiful, and, most importantly, tasty. But the yield could have been higher. But, as they say, there is no need to look for the best from the good.

I read positive reviews on the Internet about the Eastern Star pepper hybrids and decided to try some varieties. I found white, yellow and red. Most of all I liked the white star of the east. These peppers ripened earlier than all others, had the thickest walls and rather large fruit sizes. Of course, the white peppers were only at the technical stage, but I grew them in open ground, and they simply did not have time to turn yellow. But other hybrids, in general, apparently did not have enough heat, and their yield was not up to par - literally a few peppercorns ripened on each bush.

I really love a variety of peppers, but I’m somehow no longer interested in growing red ones. The chocolate star of the east attracted me from the very beginning with its non-standard coloring. True, I cannot say that the peppers were truly chocolate-colored - no, rather, they were very dark red. I also liked the white and ordinary eastern star from this series. During the ripening process, they can observe unusual transitions from one shade to another. Well, and most importantly, all these peppers have a fantastic taste. Not a single hint of bitterness, very sweet and juicy.They are best eaten fresh.
Alevtina, 37 years old, Nizhny Tagil
I purchased this variety of pepper by accident. And although we live in the northern region, I have a greenhouse where I try to grow sweet peppers every summer. In principle, I was pleased with the harvest until I tried to grow Tangerine Eastern Star last year. My whole family and I really liked these peppers. They were so tasty and juicy that few people believed that I had grown them myself. Almost everything was eaten fresh; there was almost nothing left for freezing and canning. Some of the fruits had to be picked green from the bush - at home they ripened and were almost as tasty as on the bushes. So the pepper fully justified its name.

Conclusion

Peppers from the Eastern Star series could be called ideal. Only due to their rather tall growth and the abundance of relatively large fruits do they require obligatory garter. Perhaps this would be the only drawback of this series of peppers, if not for the too frequent complaints from gardeners about the poor germination of seeds in this series in recent years.

  1. Today, my friend shared with me information about growing the hybrid pepper Star of the East in a greenhouse last season. Delight: the peppers are delicious, juicy, of different colors, and I harvested them not in buckets, but in baths, sharing them with all my neighbors... I am very sorry that this year I was not able to buy their seeds. Intrigued me!!! And this is the Kirov region.
