Carrot varieties by ripening time

In its practical application, gardening and horticulture have always been oriented towards certain deadlines. These are the growing season and the associated planting time. You have to pay attention to the timing of their feeding and the time the moon is in a certain phase. The timing of the harvest and the duration of its storage cannot be ignored. Being in the same cause-and-effect relationship, these terms pursue one goal - the timely receipt of a good harvest.

Now is not the time when the harvest was the key to the successful existence of an entire family. For a long time now, all fruits and vegetables can be bought inexpensively in the store. And this can be done all year round. And economically, growing vegetables and fruits on your own is hardly a profitable activity. It is more of a pleasant pastime in the fresh air, and at the same time a personal hobby. All of the above also applies to growing carrots.

Carrots - worries and results

Carrots are one of the five most popular vegetables in home gardening. Along with potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes and onions, this root vegetable has not escaped the attention of any vegetable garden.It is difficult to name a section of cooking where there is no place to use ordinary carrots. Its popularity is great, but there are also a lot of worries when growing a seemingly simple root vegetable.

The article will not talk about tiny root vegetables the size of a little finger, but about full-sized, varietal specimens of carrots, which make up 80% of the total harvest. And about specimens that you are not ashamed to demonstrate not only to your own guests, but also to neighboring connoisseurs. And admit to yourself that you did everything right to get a good harvest. In the distant past there were ungerminated seeds, sparse seedlings and beds of carrot embryos stuck together due to crowding. Failures are difficult to overcome, but only with them comes experience.

There are no small details when growing carrots

Every child knows the riddle about carrots, and the gardener also knows the saying to this riddle. After all, in order to put a girl in prison, and at the same time see her braid, a lot of effort and sweat must be shed. Otherwise it won’t be a girl, but a runt from the cellar. And it won’t even be a braid, but just a thin, withered string. There will be several preliminary tasks:

  • select the required bed with suitable predecessors;
  • fill it with fertilizers in the fall, in accordance with the recommendations for varietal agricultural technology;
  • conduct an analysis of horticultural literature and online forums on the issue of new products and reviews of unfamiliar carrot varieties;
  • pay special attention to zoned varieties with different ripening periods of carrots;
  • buy or order carrot seeds of your favorite varieties;
  • outline, in accordance with varietal recommendations, possible dates for planting carrot seeds. Distribute the plantings among the beds depending on the ripening period of the root crops;
  • preparing carrot seeds for planting;
  • spring preparation of beds planting carrot seeds. Warming the landing site early varieties carrots.
  • planting carrot seeds and performing varietal and agrotechnical measures for growing root crops.
Important! Medium-ripening carrot seeds should be planted separately from early-ripening seeds. Otherwise, it is possible that less tall varieties will be oppressed by their more developed neighbors.

Choosing the right landing site

Carrots, as befits beauties from the dungeon, are a capricious and demanding crop. It needs light, light soil and good predecessors. The latter include tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, cabbage and legumes. Carrots can return to their original place no earlier than 4 years. At the place where the decision was made plant carrots, you should prepare a bed with high sides in the fall. The soil in it should be light and well filled with humus. The use of manure should be completely avoided.

The method of preparing a bed for planting without digging it up in the spring gives very good results. There are several options for such preparation:

  • autumn mulching of the surface of the bed with mowed, half-rotted grass. Before planting, the mulch must be temporarily removed. After the carrot seeds are planted, it should be returned to its place before the first shoots appear;
  • spring preparation of the bed using early planting of green manure. Overgrown green manure should be cut off with a flat cutter. After this, cover the entire bed with film for several weeks to overheat;
  • trench preparation of beds in early spring. The trench, 300 mm deep, is filled with a mixture of humus and sand.Waters well and ages for several weeks.
Important! An excess of mineral fertilizers will have an extremely detrimental effect on both the quantity and quality of the crop.

Choosing a variety is difficult, but interesting

All the beauties sitting in the dungeons are not alike. The same thing happens with carrots. All are good, but how can you tell one from the other? For this purpose, there is a specific variety for each carrot. Knowing it, any gardener will be able to choose exactly the variety that meets his requirements. One is interested in the shape of the root crop, another is interested in its size or color, and a third is interested in the growing season or shelf life.

If we have only 7 of them, then there are several dozen of them abroad:

  • "Amsterdamskaya" - thin, medium size, early ripening. Cylindrical in shape with a blunt tip. The skin is thin and tender. Poorly stored;
  • "Nantes" - large sizes, all ripening periods, juicy and very sweet. Has a cylindrical shape;
  • "Flakke" or "Vleria" - large root crops of late and medium ripening. The roots are spindle-shaped. It is characterized by a low content of carotene in its composition;
  • "Chantenay" - medium-sized, conical root crops, short and thick in shape. They are characterized by insufficient keeping quality;
  • "Berlicum" - root vegetables of large size and conical shape. Stores well and has excellent taste;
  • "Mini carrot" - an early ripening root crop of small size. Used for canning or freezing;
  • "Parisian Corotel" - small fruits with a high carotene content. Delicious carrots for fresh consumption. Poorly stored;
  • "Transitional varieties" - here are all root vegetables that are difficult to attribute to any specific variety.

Having understood the existing varieties, the seed buyer will certainly know what kind of harvest he can get at the end of the season. At the same time, he will be able to select seeds with specific characteristics for a given variety.

Planting seeds

Seeds also need preparation

Many gardeners have often felt sad about the poor quality of carrot seeds. But sometimes the situation could be corrected with your own hands. In other words, you need to be able to prepare the seeds before planting. Carrot seeds are very small, pubescent and covered with an oily ethereal film, which prolongs their germination. All methods of preparing seeds for planting are aimed at combating it:

  • First of all, the seeds are placed in a saline solution prepared from 1 liter of warm water and 2 tablespoons of regular salt. Any floating specimens should be thrown away. Then they are placed in a gauze bag and immersed in warm water.

    Keep the seeds in it, rinsing it periodically, until the water cools completely.
    To be more confident in the positive result of preparing carrot seeds, the procedure can be repeated again. After this, the carrot seeds should be washed under cold water and dried well.
  • The next stage of preparation will be germinating the seeds or directly planting them in the garden bed. Carrot seeds should germinate within a week, depending on the ambient temperature. Unprepared carrot seeds germinate depending on the weather, from 30 to 40 days;
  • A rag bag of carrot seeds must be buried in barely thawed soil. The digging depth must be at least 300 mm. Before sowing, dig up the bag of seeds and use the contents directly for planting. Germination time with such preparation is reduced by 3 times;
  • It is necessary to soak the carrot seeds in warm rain or melt water for 10 - 12 hours. During the soaking process, any floating carrot seeds should be discarded.After the specified time, the swollen seeds should be placed between layers of wet wipes.

    After three or four days, the carrot seeds should sprout. Their length should not exceed 5 mm. In this form, you can plant carrot seeds;
  • good results when preparing seeds for planting are obtained by soaking them in a solution of microelements or an infusion of ash. But infusion in various acids and peroxides raises great doubts.
Advice! Many experienced gardeners advise, before soaking carrot seeds, to grind them between layers of soft cloth.

This will make it possible to remove the bristles present on them and will facilitate the preparation process itself.

There are no small details when planting carrots

Early spring is the most long-awaited and favorite time of all gardeners and gardeners. She is also the most tense. The time for theoretical studies and preparatory work is over. Serious field work begins when any delay or wrong actions will lead to a sad result. Every nuance will have to be taken into account:

  • timing of planting work. To obtain an early harvest - the second ten days of April or the beginning of May - the harvest can be harvested from the end of June. During summer planting, in mid-May, plant carrots for winter consumption. Pre-winter planting - before mid-November will allow you to get very early root crops for summer use.
  • air and soil temperature, taking into account expected changes. Around the end of April, when the ground temperature will be close to 100, and the air will become no colder than 160, you can begin the sowing process.
  • the presence of covering and mulching material. This is especially true for pre-winter plantings and when there is a danger of return frosts.If carrots get frozen, they may not die, but go into bloom;
  • how to sow. The practice of planting small seeds has not developed one best method. Each gardener chooses only a convenient option for him. This could be an option with seeds glued to tape, rolling them in ash, or creating certain suspensions. The main thing is to achieve uniform placement of seeds along the length of the bed.
  • method of preparing the bed itself. It is better to do this with a narrow board (up to 100 mm), pressing it forcefully into the ground to a depth of 30 mm. After planting the seeds, sprinkle them with fluffy humus.
Important! Planting carrots in the last ten days of June will eliminate the possibility of them being damaged by the carrot fly, which flies out in May.

Pleasant worries

The most difficult work is left behind. The process of garden creativity and acting has begun and can only be stopped by force majeure. All that remains is to rejoice at the first shoots and occasionally thin them out in accordance with varietal agricultural technology. As the seedlings mature, feed young sprouts with complex fertilizers, avoiding chlorine-containing and excessive mineral compounds. This is especially important to do after each thinning.

The thinning process and time are quite simple:

  • The first thinning should be done after the appearance of 3 true leaves. The distance between sprouts should not be less than 30 mm;
  • the second – in a month. And the distance should be about 60 mm;
  • All excess sprouts must be immediately removed from the garden bed so as not to attract the carrot fly by the smell.
Important! You should not throw away bags of seeds that were planted in the garden.Based on the recommendations written on them, it will be easy to determine the expected harvest date.

If you harvest carrots too early, their taste and aroma will be lost. In the later stages, the harvest will lose quality due to various damages, which will affect the keeping quality of the carrots. A small amount of attention to the condition of plant leaves and the harvest will reward you for this with both quality and quantity.
