Varieties of carrots without core

Carrots are becoming increasingly popular today. without core or with a small core. The reason for the popularity of these varieties, unfortunately, is that carrot producers, in an effort to increase yield, are too zealous with nitrogen fertilizers. Just as cabbage accumulates the vast majority of nitrates in the stalk, carrots collect them in the core.

Demand creates supply, and breeders happily offered a choice of carrot varieties without cores, modestly keeping silent about the fact that carrots do not like excess nitrogen. An industrial enterprise is unlikely to be able to sell carrot roots grown on nitrogen fertilizers. Carrots oversaturated with nitrates grow ugly or produce many roots from one root collar.

In addition, carrots still deposit nutrients into the root crop, but if previously most of them were in the core, where do they accumulate now?

Nevertheless, such varieties have a lot of advantages that make them popular among summer residents. And fertilizers just need to be added in moderation.

Which varieties to choose

Natalia F1

Natalia F1

Mid-season new hybrid of Dutch selection with a ripening period of 4 months. Variety "Nantes". Carrots are long, blunt, without a core. Among the varieties of its type it is the best in taste.Contains a very large amount of saccharides, which children will certainly like.

The weight of the root crop is 100 g. The hybrid attracts with its smooth fruits, ideal for storage and transportation. It consistently shows high yields, and the yield record was set with this carrot in the northern regions.

Carrots of this variety can be stored for 8 months without compromising quality.

Seeds are sown in the first half of May in warm soil. The distance between plants should ultimately be 4-5 cm, between rows of carrots 20 cm. Subsequent care is usual: weeding weed, thinning crops, loosening the soil between rows.

Important! If there is an excess of nitrogen and water in the soil, the development of the hybrid slows down.

To obtain high-quality carrots, potassium fertilizers are needed. Fresh organic matter cannot be introduced at all.

Selectively, instead of thinning, Natalia carrots can be harvested starting in July. The main harvest is harvested in the second half of September.

Praline

Praline

It takes 4 months from sowing to harvest. Root vegetables are leveled, with a smooth surface, cylindrical in shape. The skin is thin. The core is missing. Carrots are long, reaching 22 cm.

Due to its juiciness and significant saccharide content, it is excellent for making freshly squeezed juices.

The variety does not require a large amount of fertilizer, but it is quite demanding on the presence of moisture. Praline requires watering regularly.

This variety is planted starting from the end of April. The harvest takes place in September.

Yaroslavna

Yaroslavna

This mid-season variety belongs to the Berlicum variety and is distinguished by excellent taste. After emergence, it takes 4.5 months to reach full maturity. The carrots are long, blunt, without a core, smooth along the entire length. Root vegetables are on average 20 cm long.

The variety is sown in mid-May. It can be harvested for bunch production in August. To bookmark on storage The main harvest is harvested in September.

Without core

Without core

Yes, that’s the “original” name of the variety.

From the manufacturer's description

Late ripening variety. Root crops up to 22 cm long, blunt-ended, cylindrical in shape. Suitable for winter sowing.

The pulp is juicy, with excellent taste. Root vegetables do not have a core. “Without core” is consumed fresh, processed into juices and stored for long-term storage.

The manufacturer produces carrot seeds in two versions: regular seeds and on tape.

In the case of ordinary seeds, sowing is done in early spring to a depth of 5-10 mm with a width between rows of 25-30 cm. Later, thinning of the seedlings is done, leaving a distance of 2-3 cm between the sprouts. The rest of the care consists of watering, loosening and fertilizing the on a regular basis. You can get an early harvest by sowing the seeds of this carrot variety in November.

The tape with seeds is laid out to a depth of 1.5-2 cm. Preferably “on the edge”. Before emergence of shoots, the plantings on the tape are regularly watered. Then only weeding and watering will be necessary. There is no need to thin out “ribbon” seedlings.

Consumer Reviews

Despite all the advertising advantages of the variety, the reviews, unfortunately, are not for the better. Seed buyers confirm the excellent taste of the variety. As is the juiciness of root vegetables. But they note that the carrots grow small, and the ability for long-term storage is completely absent. It is necessary to process the “Coreless” carrot harvest as soon as possible.

But perhaps in the case of this variety there were purchases of fakes.

Important! Check the authenticity of the seeds. Many companies not only produce packaging of a certain type, but also paint the seeds in “branded” colors, thanks to which you can recognize a fake.

Chicago F1

Chicago F1

High-yielding hybrid from a Dutch company. Variety Shantane. It was released recently, but has already found its fans. It has a rather short growing season: 95 days. The fruits are up to 18 cm long, juicy, with a small core, brightly colored. Contain a large amount of saccharides.

Not recommended for long-term storage. It is consumed fresh and in the form of juice.

The variety can be sown in early spring for summer harvesting and in summer for autumn harvesting. In the latter case, it can be stored until April. Resistant to the most common diseases and tolerant to bolting.

You can also learn about the advantages of this variety from the video:

A little about excess nitrogen and how it can be removed

Fresh sawdust, when heated, removes the nitrogen found there from the soil. For this reason, they are recommended to be used only for mulching and not added to the soil for those crops that require large amounts of nitrogen for fruiting.

In the case of carrots, the situation is the opposite. Excess nitrogen is harmful to the development of root crops, which means, if necessary, you can safely add fresh sawdust under the carrots. Although fresh organic matter such as manure or plant residues - sources of nitrogen - carrots are harmful, sawdust is an exception. Until they rot, they can’t be considered organic.

Therefore, under carrots, along with sand, fresh sawdust can be added to the soil to improve drainage and provide the looseness this crop needs.Sawdust has little effect on the size of root crops, but you can be sure that there are no significant amounts of nitrates in root crops “grown in sawdust.”

The video clearly shows which root crops grew in the beds with and without sawdust.

When choosing carrot varieties for the garden, it would be ideal to focus on their keeping quality, disease resistance and taste; the excess of nitrates in the carrot core, which is so terrible for many, can always be avoided. Although I must admit that cutting carrots without a core into soup is much more convenient than with a core.
