Gavroche tomatoes are ideal for whole-fruit canning. Its fruits are compact in size and have good taste. The variety tolerates most diseases typical of tomatoes well.
Breeding history
The variety was created in 1993, registered in Rosreestr and approved for use since 1997. The originator is Agrofirma Gavrosh LLC. Tomatoes are recommended for growing in open ground, but under film tunnels.
Description and characteristics of the tomato variety Gavroche
Gavroche tomato bushes are low-growing, 40-50 cm. Therefore, no tying is required. Branching is average.
The first ovary appears at the level of 6-7 leaves. The remaining inflorescences are formed after 1-2 leaves. Each inflorescence contains up to six fruits, and there are no more than six racemose inflorescences on the plant.
The tomato inflorescence is simple, intermediate type. The peduncle is articulated. There is no characteristic spot on the fruit near the stalk.
The fruits are small in size, weighing from 40 to 50 g. There are two to three seed nests. Tomatoes are red in color, spherical in shape, and have a smooth skin. The fruits are classified as cherry.
Ripening and fruiting
Tomato Gavroche is early ripening. From the appearance of the first sprouts of seedlings to harvest, 82-84 days pass.
In warm regions, ripening occurs at the end of June.
Productivity of Gavroche tomato
Despite the compact size of the bushes, the variety can be safely called productive. From 1.5 to 1.8 kg are collected from one plant.
Disease resistance
Tomato Gavroche resists the tobacco mosaic virus well. Tomatoes resistant to late blight. The variety is susceptible to cladosporiosis. However, to prevent the yield from decreasing, preventive measures are required against all diseases characteristic of tomatoes.
Where is it grown?
The variety is intended for cultivation in open ground and under film tunnels, but provided that we are talking about the southern region of the country. In the northern parts of the Russian Federation, in Siberia, in the Far North, they are grown in greenhouses, preferably with good heating. If these recommendations are followed, you can expect an increase in yield in the range of 20-30%.
Methods of application
Due to the small size of the fruit, tomatoes are ideal for whole-fruit canning and pickling. Tomatoes are consumed fresh and added to salads and other dishes.
Advantages and disadvantages
Gavroche tomatoes are sweet in taste, small in size and have many benefits.
Pros:
- bushes do not require garters or support;
- the small size of the fruits allows them to be preserved without cutting;
- ultra-early;
- dense skin, not prone to cracking;
- the entire harvest is harvested in two weeks;
- the tomatoes are in marketable condition;
- tomatoes can be grown even on the balcony;
- fruits tolerate transportation well;
- due to the compact size of the plant per 1 sq. m. cultivation of up to eight seedlings is allowed.
Minuses:
- thermophilic, therefore in cold regions it is grown only under cover or in a greenhouse;
- susceptibility to cladosporiosis.
Landing dates and rules
The seeds are sown 30-35 days before the expected date of transferring the seedlings to a permanent place of cultivation, that is, approximately in April. It is recommended to buy a soil mixture that is designed specifically for tomatoes. The seeds are buried 15-20 mm. After 5-8 days, the first shoots should appear, which are fertilized with manure. Picking is carried out after the appearance of 1-2 leaves.
Before planting in open ground, seedlings must be hardened off for seven days. The day before, humus and fertilizing with nitrogen are applied to the garden beds. The recommended planting pattern is 30x50 cm. 7-9 bushes fit on 1 square meter, but it is not recommended to thicken the planting too much so that the plants are well ventilated. The estimated landing date is May or early June.
Care instructions
It is recommended to water tomatoes in the morning, before the sun reaches its zenith, or in the evening. I water 1-2 times a week, depending on the weather and air temperature. Settled and warm water is best suited for irrigation.
Plants are fed three times per season:
- after transplantation - organic and nitrogen fertilizers;
- at the beginning of flowering - potassium;
- after the appearance of the first tomatoes - complex mixtures.
The bushes of the Gavrosh variety are standard and do not require staking or pinching. Beds with tomatoes necessarily require weeding so that weeds do not “crush” the tomatoes. The procedure helps to avoid the development of many diseases.
How to form a Gavroche tomato bush
Low-growing tomatoes, as a rule, do not require shaping. But in order to increase the efficiency of fruiting, pinching is allowed. This will allow a sufficient number of flower clusters to form, followed by fruit set. Forming is recommended for tomatoes grown in a greenhouse. This will avoid the development of late blight and accelerate the development of fruits. Pinching is carried out on the stem up to the first brush.
Disease and pest control
Cladosporiosis or brown spot causes damage to the foliage of bushes. When a problem occurs, there is a risk of losing the harvest by more than 30%. Tomato Gavroche does not cope well with this disease. The fungus is easily carried by dust and tolerates winter cold well. Two conditions are important for damage - comfortable temperature and high humidity.
Preventive measures against cladosporiosis:
- preventing an increase in humidity (refusing rainwatering, waterlogging the soil);
- mulching around bushes;
- ventilation of the entire bush, especially the lower tier.
If a fungus is detected, you can use traditional methods of control. One of the methods is a mixture of milk and iodine, followed by generous spraying of the lower foliage. Irrigation can also be carried out with serum mixed with water. The use of biological drugs at an early stage of the disease is allowed: Fitosporin, Alirin and others. In case of severe damage, fungicides Bravo, Kaptan, Consento and others are used.
Conclusion
Tomato Gavroche is an early ripening variety. The harvest ripens together. Tomatoes are ideal for harvesting and are not prone to most diseases. It tolerates transportation well, the peel does not burst. But the most important highlight of the variety is its ultra-earliness.
