Fertilizing cucumbers with urea

Urea or urea is a nitrogen fertilizer. The substance was first isolated from urine and identified at the end of the 18th century, and at the beginning of the 19th century the chemist Friedrich Wöhler synthesized it from an inorganic substance. A significant event was the beginning of organic chemistry as a science.

Urea appears as colorless, odorless crystals. As fertilizer is often produced in granular form, the substance dissolves well in water.

Urea is known to all gardeners without exception. The effectiveness has been proven by more than one generation of agronomists. Without being experts in the field of chemistry, most people know that cucumbers need nitrogen for a complete growing season. Urea contains almost 47% nitrogen. Fertilizer can be applied as the main type of fertilizing, or in combination with other types of fertilizers and fertilizing.

Fertilizer from domestic producers is affordable. It is produced in granular or tablet form, which is very convenient when you need to feed only a few plants. Therefore, a good ratio of price, quality, and efficiency attracts gardeners.

Signs of nitrogen deficiency

Cucumbers are everyone's favorite vegetable. In the summer, they are actively used together with other vegetables to prepare salads. It is the vegetable salad that stimulates digestion. Cucumbers can be eaten in any quantity, because they consist of 95% water.

Salted or pickled cucumbers occupy a special place in Russian cuisine. They are an independent, self-sufficient dish; they are included in salads and soups. Therefore, every gardener wants to grow cucumbers in sufficient quantity so that there is enough for both food and supplies.

You should not refuse to feed cucumbers with fertilizers. It is impossible to grow cucumbers without adding additional nutrition. If the plants do not have enough nitrogen, then you will see it immediately, because the external manifestations are very clear and understandable to any gardener:

  • Slow plant growth;
  • Cucumbers develop poorly, the plant looks lethargic and stunted;
  • The leaves turn yellow, the shoots become lighter. The dark green color of the leaves characteristic of cucumbers is absent;
  • Falling of leaves at the beginning or middle of the growing season;
  • If the plant does not have enough strength to form a foliage mass, then, accordingly, the ovaries will not be formed and the fruits will not be formed;
  • At lack of nitrogen low yields;
  • The fruits become pale green;
  • The growth of side shoots stops.

If there are signs of nitrogen deficiency in cucumbers, it is urgent to apply urea - the most accessible nitrogen fertilizer. The popularity of the fertilizer is also due to the fact that it is cheap, but at the same time very effective.

Too much nitrogen in the soil is also not good for cucumbers. The plant only grows green mass. The leaves become large and rich green. The fruits do not form or grow underdeveloped and twisted.

However, some features of urea should be kept in mind. When applied to the soil, bacteria act on the fertilizer, urea decomposes and releases ammonium carbonate.Therefore, if the fertilizer was embedded shallowly in the soil, then you should not expect a significant result from its use. And this does not mean that urea can be used exclusively in greenhouses and greenhouses. There will be benefits from fertilizing, but it needs to be incorporated into the soil to reduce the loss of ammonium carbonate to a minimum.

Urea can acidify and alkalize the soil. To avoid such effects on acidic soils, add 300 g of chalk per 200 g of urea.

Fertilizing cucumbers with urea

For the entire growing season it is recommended feed the cucumbers about 5 times to get an abundance of everyone’s favorite vegetable for salads and preserves. With a rich harvest, it is equally important that the grown cucumbers are smooth and healthy, without external flaws. Therefore, it is important to use it in time urea fertilizer for cucumbers. It acts very well as a fertilizer on cucumbers. There are several stages of feeding cucumbers:

  • Before planting, you can add urea while digging the soil. 1.5-2 weeks before planting cucumbers, fertilize the beds, try to plant its granules deeper (7-8 cm). This application of urea is carried out either in the fall or in the spring, combining the process with digging up the soil. Application rate: 5-10 g per 1 square. m of soil. It is advisable to divide the application into 2 doses: autumn and spring;
  • Immediately before planting the seeds, apply fertilizer to the holes. It is undesirable for it to come into contact with the seeds, otherwise there will be a delay in seed germination. Sprinkle urea (4 g per hole) lightly with soil, and then plant the seeds;
  • All subsequent fertilizing is best done by adding a urea solution.After the sprouts have hatched and grown to the first true leaves, you can water them with the solution. Dissolve 30 g of fertilizer in 10 liters of water;
  • If the cucumbers were grown by seedlings, then fertilizing with urea is carried out no earlier than 2 weeks after planting in the ground, when the adaptation period has passed and the plants begin to grow. At this time, the cucumbers begin to bloom. Fertilizing with urea lays the groundwork for future abundant fruiting. It is advisable to add 50 g of superphosphate when feeding;
  • The next fertilizing with urea is carried out at the beginning of fruiting. So that it is not a burden for the plants to increase their fruit mass. Superphosphate (40 g) works well in combination with urea and potassium nitrate (20 g);
  • The next time the addition of urea is indicated at the stage when cucumbers bear maximum fruitto increase fruiting, prolong it and help the plant. Dissolve 13 g of urea, add potassium nitrate (30 g), mix well in 10 liters of water and water the plants;
Advice! Do not apply urea in dry, hot weather. The best time to apply fertilizer is early morning or late evening, then abundant watering of cucumbers is required.

The root method of application works best in warm weather.

Foliar feeding of cucumbers with urea

Foliar feeding of cucumbers is a good help when they are sick or weakened, when the ovaries and leaves fall off. The effectiveness of foliar feeding with urea especially increases under unfavorable natural conditions: during periods of drought or cold weather, when the absorption capacity of the roots is reduced.

Benefits of foliar feeding:

  • The use of urea for foliar feeding can significantly extend the fruiting period of cucumbers;
  • Nitrogen is immediately absorbed by the leaves and therefore its effect occurs almost immediately, and is not extended over time, as happens with the root method of application;
  • The method is very economical. You spend the solution specifically on a specific plant. The fertilizer does not move to the lower soil layers, it is not affected by other elements, and is not absorbed weeds;
  • Foliar feeding can be carried out at any stage of cucumber development.

The foliar application method is very effective. Spraying with urea can also be used as a preventive measure in the fight against pests and diseases of cucumbers. Foliar feeding increases plant immunity.

When preparing a solution for foliar spraying of cucumbers, observe the dosage and processing conditions:

  • Dissolve 5 tbsp. l. urea in a bucket of water. Do not exceed the norm, as there will be no benefit, but only harm in the form of burnt leaves. For young plants, the dosage can be slightly adjusted downward so that the tender leaves of the sprouts are not affected;
  • Do not spray plants in the rain. Treat cucumbers growing in open ground early in the morning or in the evening, when there is no direct sunlight;
  • Cucumbers in the greenhouse can be sprayed in any weather, but so as not to cause sunburn;
  • Combine feeding cucumbers with urea with other elements necessary for plant nutrition;
  • Spend not only foliar feeding of cucumbers, but also root ones. If you apply fertilizers for cucumbers only by foliar method, you will have to do this quite often: once every 2 weeks, otherwise the benefit will be barely visible.
Advice! For spraying, have a control plant, by the appearance of which you will judge the benefits or harm of the measures being taken.

To be sure of the amount of fertilizer applied, remember that:

  • In 1 tbsp. l. 10 g of urea is placed;
  • Matchbox without slide – 13 g;
  • A glass with a volume of 200 g holds 130 g of fertilizer.

Follow the instructions, do not apply excess urea, so as not to be left without a harvest.

Conclusion

It’s not difficult to grow your favorite vegetable. Support the plant by adding urea and other necessary elements. And you will have another question: where to put the harvest? Urea is an organic fertilizer for cucumbers, which is in an easy-to-use form. When it is added, cucumbers receive the required amount of nitrogen, which is so necessary for growth and fruiting. When using fertilizer for foliar spraying, you can significantly extend the growing season of plants and get wonderful fruits for as long as possible.
