Potato Tuleyevsky

The Tuleyevsky potato is one of the hybrids bred by the Potato Research Institute of the Kemerovo Region, whose governor is Aman Tuleyev. A new variety was named in his honor; with this, scientists and agronomists of Kemerovo wanted to thank their governor for his services in significantly improving agriculture throughout the region. For ten years, breeders worked to obtain a potato variety worthy of bearing such a name, and in 2007 it was included in the State Register of Vegetable Crops of the Russian Federation. Now, along with many already existing potato varieties, Tuleyevskaya potatoes are gradually gaining popularity among industrial agricultural firms and private vegetable growers.

Description

In the certificate attached to the application for registration in the State Register, the manufacturer of the new potato variety Tuleevsky declares the following varietal standards:

  1. Tuleyevsky potato is a medium-ripening variety, the duration from planting in the ground to full ripening of the tubers is from 80 to 100 days.
  2. The Tuleyevsky table potato variety is used for preparing culinary dishes, especially good for side dishes in the form of puree.
  3. Morphology of the potato variety Tuleevsky: the height of the bushes is from 50 to 70 cm, they are mostly erect, but can be slightly lodging, the leaves are dark green with wavy edges, of medium size, the corolla of flowers is white and quite large.
  4. The yield of Tuleyevskaya potatoes is 180-420 centners per hectare, the record harvest was 458 centners.
  5. The root vegetable is an elongated oval tuber, the eyes are very small, the peel is earthy yellow, slightly rough, the flesh inside is pale yellow, a vein may appear in the center a shade darker than the pulp.
  6. The weight of an average root crop is from 120 to 270 grams.
  7. The taste of Tuleyevsky potatoes is noted as excellent or good, the starch content is almost 17 percent.
  8. Excellent presentation when harvested from 88 to almost 100%.
  9. Storage safety is 90 percent.
  10. Relation to diseases: the Tuleevsky variety is resistant to potato cancer diseases, it was noted susceptibility to golden nematode, To late blight This variety has a dual relationship - the tops are longer stable to this disease than tubers.
Attention! If there is a loose vein in the middle of the potato, this indicates a violation of the growing technology; the wider and more watery this core is, the more significantly the shelf life of the potato decreases.

In potato growing companies, potatoes are kept in warehouses under conditions that maintain their preservation throughout the winter, so there is never a shortage of potatoes in the trade. In the video you can see the Tuleyevsky potato warehouse, and a warehouse worker demonstrates its appearance after several months of storage.

Growing technology

Tuleyevsky potatoes do not require special conditions when growing, even on virgin lands in the first year of planting it gives a decent harvest, but we should not forget that some violations in the technological cultivation cycle can lead to undesirable consequences, so it is necessary to provide the required minimum for potato plantings:

  • the soil — the composition of the soil for planting Tuleyevsky potatoes should be loose, well aerated, fertile;
  • fertilizers — a complex of fertilizers: organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are applied in early spring 2 months before planting;
  • watering — the Tuleyevsky potato variety can grow excellently for a very long time without heavy watering, it gets enough rain, but during prolonged drought it is necessary to water it 1-2 times a month, alternating with loosening the soil;
  • hilling — potato tubers are planted in a square-cluster method (50x50 cm), this method is convenient for further hilling between rows of plantings, which is carried out at least 2 times during the growing season: once after the growth of 5-6 leaves, the second after flowering;
  • protection from diseases and pests - before planting, the seed (tubers) should be treated with special compounds intended for these purposes; to improve the growth of tubers, there are also means of stimulation;
  • pest control — the main potato enemy is the Colorado potato beetle. It is almost impossible to completely exterminate it, so potato tops are sprayed with pesticides several times a season: the first time before flowering begins, then after it ends, and the last time 2-3 weeks before lodging of the tops; this time you can cancel the spraying and collect the pests manually;
  • planting and harvesting dates - Potato tubers can be planted in the spring (early or mid-May) at an air temperature of at least +15°C; they are not afraid of sudden changes in night and day temperatures; potato harvesting begins in mid-August and ends at the end of September.
Advice! The harvested potato crop should be stored in cellars, basements or special warehouses at a temperature not lower than +8-10°C and air humidity not lower than 60%.

The storage room should have a good exhaust hood or ventilation system, then the potatoes will not deteriorate (rot, dry out or get sick) until the new harvest.

In this video, the vegetable grower talks about storing Tuleyevsky variety potatoes in a private storage facility and shows the result of such storage.

A little about the pros and cons

There is no such variety of vegetables or fruits that would have only one advantage; each has its own disadvantages. Tuleyevsky potatoes are no exception to the general rules.

Only pros:

  1. Productivity is higher than the average values of other similar varieties.
  2. Resistance to many diseases.
  3. Low maintenance and soil composition.
  4. Increased percentage germination of marketable tubers (subject to compliance with growing technology).
  5. Excellent presentation: small eyes, weak roughness.
  6. The taste is excellent, there are no aftertastes, the natural taste of potatoes.
  7. Versatility of use in culinary dishes: the starch content is normal, does not boil over for a long time when cooked, and retains its shape.

Possible disadvantages:

  1. The shelf life and percentage preservation of tubers leave much to be desired; the manufacturer of the variety claims only 90% out of 100.
  2. Tuber susceptibility to late blight and golden nematode (prophylaxis required before planting).

The ratio of good and bad qualities outweighs for the better, but in a separate section we have placed reviews of vegetable growers who, from their own experience, know everything about Tuleyevsky potatoes and will share their opinions with us.

The photo shows the treatment of seed potatoes before planting (from the Colorado potato beetle).

The fight against the main overseas pest on potatoes takes a lot of time, and such a remedy has not yet been invented, after treatment with which the Colorado potato beetle disappears forever, therefore the most effective method today is considered to be preventive treatment of tubers with special preparations: Confidor-extra, Klubneshit, Komandor and many others.

Reviews

Anna, age, Kostroma
“I liked the Tuleevsky variety from the first year of planting, its yield is high, most of the nodules are even and of the same size, but occasionally there were giants and midgets. They taste great, the potatoes are stored for a long time, they hardly spoil until May-June, then the eyes begin to sprout.”
Prokhor, 46 years old, Nizhny Novgorod
“I planted Tuleyevsky potatoes on virgin soil, the entire plot was covered in weeds, after several hillings weeds disappeared, and I also treated it against the Colorado potato beetle several times, I couldn’t do without it, but I didn’t apply fertilizer. The harvest exceeded all my expectations - from one bucket I got 5 buckets of potatoes, and they came out so big.”
Zhenya, 17 years old, Nizhnekamsk
“We planted potatoes in our garden at the orphanage, someone said it was the Tuleevsky variety. In the fall, they began to dig up this Tuleyevsky variety, from one bush I got almost a bucket of potatoes, apparently this is a very good variety. Our director said that now we will always imprison her.”
Nikita Petrovich, 67 years old, Chuvashia
“For many years I have tried to plant many varieties of potatoes, the Tuleevsky variety amazed me with its productivity and unpretentiousness.Over the entire summer, the plot with these potatoes was only once hilled up and treated for beetles, and the harvest turned out to be remarkable, I have never had anything like this before.”

A wonderful woman vegetable grower filmed and voiced her opinion about potatoes Tuleyevsky, and showed what her potatoes look like after storage.

Conclusion

Potatoes are the most consumed product after bread; life without crumbly, steaming potatoes for residents of Russia, and many other countries, will seem gray and dull. Stores sometimes offer customers such potatoes that they lose all appetite, so we advise every vegetable grower to grow his own natural product, update varieties at least every 5 years, and not forget that there is such a variety as Tuleyevskaya potato.
