Talisman grapes have long ceased to be a novelty. The hybrid was obtained more than 30 years ago, so it managed to win the trust of gardeners. The frost resistance and large-fruited variety led to the fact that breeders developed new varieties based on it. However, most winegrowers prefer to cultivate an already proven hybrid, which consistently produces high yields.
History of selection
The parents are the varieties Vostorg and White Beauty crossed with each other.
Based on the Talisman grape, domestic scientists have developed new varieties that have already proven themselves well in the collections of amateur gardeners.
By crossing the Kodryanka and Talisman grapes, the Atos variety with dark purple berries was obtained.
Description of the Talisman grape variety
The hybrid has only the female type of flower. To get a harvest, pollinators must be planted next to the Talisman. The best of them are: Kishmish-342, Augustin, KarMaKod, Aleshenkin.
Bunches
The weight of one Talisman brush reaches 1 kg, and on large forms it reaches 1.5 kg. The density of berries per bunch is average. Almost no peas. The shape of the brushes is close to conical.
Berries
The fruits are white with a greenish tint and have a waxy coating. At the time of full ripening, on the side facing the sun, the berries acquire a yellowish tan. They are oval in shape and quite large in size - 31x35 mm. Berry weight is from 12 to 16 g.
The skin on the fruit is thin, you can hardly feel it. The crop tolerates transportation well.
Vine
80-90% of shoots produce berries. 1-2 clusters can form on one vine. If there are more brushes, they need to be thinned out. Otherwise, the grape bush will not withstand the load. It is recommended to leave 26-32 eyes on one plant.
Characteristics of grapes Talisman
The variety has high immunity to diseases and is less attacked by pests. Compared to other representatives of the culture, Talisman has gained fame as a frost-resistant hybrid. When grown in the southern regions, it does not require shelter.
Ripening period
Talisman grapes are early ripening varieties. The berries are fully ripe by the end of August or the beginning of September. It all depends on the weather conditions in the region where the grapes are cultivated. The berries do not fall off for a long time if they are on the vine. They can stay fresh until frost.
Productivity
The productivity of the hybrid is high. From one bush they harvest from 10 to 12 kg. The variety shows good indicators of flower pollination in calm weather.
Taste
The taste of the grapes is excellent. Talisman berries are sweet, with a subtle nutmeg flavor. The fruits of the hybrid have high sugar content - 18-24%, acidity 6-8 g/l.
Growing regions
Favorable regions for cultivating Talisman grapes are the southern regions of the country. Provided a winter shelter is provided, the hybrid can be grown in the black earth district, the Moscow region and central Russia. The variety ripens early, which allows you to harvest before the onset of cold weather.
In Belarus and Ukraine, where the climate is much milder, the Talisman grape is quite popular.
Frost resistance
The hybrid tolerates frosts down to -25°C well. But for the winter it is recommended to build a shelter for the Talisman. With the onset of stable cold weather, the vine is removed from the support, placed in a dug trench or simply on the ground. The lashes are covered with spruce branches; in the northern regions, slate or roofing felt is added to them. The plant is released from shelter after March 15.
Drought resistance
The Talisman grape tolerates air drought better; its root system is well developed. But without enough water it will not grow and bear fruit.
Resistance to diseases and pests
The hybrid demonstrates high immunity. It is resistant to most diseases that affect berry crops.
Methods of application
Hybrid Talisman is a universal variety. It can be eaten raw or sent for processing. Suitable for the production of juices and wine.
Advantages and disadvantages
Over more than 30 years of cultivation of the Talisman grape, winegrowers have come to the conclusion that the variety has much more advantages than disadvantages.
Pros:
- frost resistance (withstands up to -25ᵒC);
- tolerates transportation well;
- excellent taste;
- immunity to diseases (it is enough to carry out preventive spraying in a timely manner);
- early ripeness;
- productivity;
- mature clusters on the bushes do not rot or fall off until the first frost;
- high degree of rooting (more than 90% of cuttings).
Minuses:
- the need to plant pollinator plants on the site.
Landing Features
The best place for planting Talisman grapes is in sunny areas, where the crop will not be shaded by other tall plants, and where no draft wind will reach the bush. As a rule, such a place is located on the south side between buildings or houses that do not allow the wind to pass through.
Cold air stagnates in the lowlands. This will affect the productivity and immunity of the bush. The soil must be well permeable to moisture, the level of groundwater should not be higher than 2.5 m.
This way the roots and the vine will not interfere with each other. Reproduction is carried out by taps, seedlings, cuttings. Talisman is planted in the spring (the event should be carried out before the buds open, i.e., before the beginning of April) and in the fall (the optimal time is the end of October). The young seedling must be carefully covered.
When a bush is planted in the spring, the planting hole is prepared in the fall. Organic and mineral fertilizers are applied. If the grapes are planted in the fall, the hole is dug several weeks in advance. The parameters of the hole are length and width 70 cm, depth 70 cm. A drainage layer consisting of pebbles or crushed stone is laid at the bottom of the hole.Experts advise placing a vertical pipe in the hole. It is necessary for root watering.
The seedling should not have any damage, broken or rotten branches. You should pay attention to the development of the root system.
Rules of care
The plant needs to be watered rarely, but abundantly. During the period of berry ripening, irrigation should not be skipped. Because the fruits will not be juicy. Over-watering can lead to rotting of the root system and the berries will be too watery and unsweetened.
Top dressing
Hybrid Talisman prefers organic fertilizers - wood ash and compost. In the spring, during the formation of the ovary, so that the plant’s strength is not spent on crown development, the portion of nitrogen fertilizers should be reduced.
Grape pruning Talisman
Grapes of the Talisman variety require annual shortening of the shoots, carried out by a qualified specialist. The plant will not withstand the overload of the ovary, the berries will be small and of poor quality.
Pruning is carried out in early spring. This is done before the juice begins to move in the tissues. First, diseased, rotten, weak, frostbitten branches are removed. Then they move on to the formation of the bush. In the summer, stepchildren and excess shoots are broken out. It’s better to do this right away before they become stiff.
The main pruning is carried out in the fall, when the bushes have completely lost their leaves. This allows manipulations to be carried out with minimal negative consequences for the plant. The lashes should have no more than seven eyes, 32 fruit buds - the largest number that can be left on an adult bush.
Protection from diseases and pests
Grape growers recommend carrying out preventive measures aimed at maintaining plant resistance to disease. This is what will provide the Talisman with high productivity. To protect the bush from fungus during the growing season, it is necessary to treat it with a solution of copper sulfate in the spring.
Among the pests, wasps cause great damage to crops. Berries contain a high percentage of sugar. When the fruits are ripe, insects suck the juice out of them. If there are a small number of pests, you can get rid of them by placing a container nearby with poison dissolved in water.
Mesh bags are placed on each bunch, after which the insects are unable to feast on the juice.
Conclusion
The Talisman grape differs from other varieties in its taste and high yield. The hybrid is resistant to frost, diseases and pests. The mascot needs a pollinator. Otherwise, you can’t count on the appearance of fruits.
