Reproduction of raspberries: in autumn, spring, cuttings, by dropwise

There are several ways to propagate the herb on your site. If the rules are followed, they all demonstrate good effectiveness.

Peculiarities of propagation of garden raspberries

Garden ezhemalina is a hybrid of raspberries and blackberries, first bred at the end of the 19th century in the USA. Currently, the plant is represented by many varieties and is very popular among summer residents.

Ezhemalina combines the best qualities of both parent cultures and has almost no disadvantages. Its advantages include:

  • high productivity;
  • large and juicy berries;
  • unpretentiousness to growing conditions;
  • increased frost resistance.

The shrub easily tolerates drought and has good immunity to fungi.

Attention! The thorns of the raspberries are small and soft, so they do not make picking berries difficult.

You can grow raspberries on fertile and poor soils.

You can increase the population of shrubs on your site without purchasing new seedlings. But the reproduction of every malina has its own characteristics. For propagation of plants, only vegetative methods are used.

Seed propagation of raspberries is usually not carried out.Shrub seeds do not germinate well, but the main disadvantage is that the interspecific hybrid does not retain the unique varietal characteristics.

How does garden raspberry propagate?

Propagation of the plant is carried out in three main ways. You can use woody and green shoots of shrubs, as well as root shoots.

Radical shoots

Most varieties of the crop produce abundantly basal shoots - young shoots formed on horizontally located underground rods. To prevent the shoots from spreading uncontrollably throughout the area, it can be used to deliberately breed raspberries.

The reproduction algorithm is as follows:

  1. In the spring, after the snow melts, but before the active growing season begins, an adult raspberry bush is dug up.
  2. Using a sterile sharp instrument, the roots are cut into pieces 10-15 cm long, leaving a growth bud in each section.
  3. The resulting cuttings are placed horizontally in fertile soil to a depth of about 20 cm.
  4. The shoots are sprinkled with soil on top and watered abundantly.

During the warm season, standard care is provided for root cuttings. By autumn the shoots should be sufficiently strong.

When propagating raspberries with pieces of roots, the growth buds should remain directed upwards

Cuttings of raspberries

Shrubs can be propagated by cuttings using last year's woody and annual green shoots. The diagram looks like this:

  1. At the end of spring, several branches are taken from a bush older than two years and divided into pieces 20-25 cm long.
  2. Leaves are removed from the cuttings and an oblique cut is made at the bottom with a sharp knife.
  3. The shoots are dipped in a growth stimulator and then planted in a container with nutrient soil or in a temporary bed.
  4. Plants are watered abundantly and covered with a glass or plastic container on top to create greenhouse conditions.

If you plant Ezhmalina from cuttings, then its roots will appear in about a month using this propagation method. After the shoots confidently begin to grow, they can be moved to a permanent place so that they have time to get stronger before the fall.

Before planting, raspberry cuttings can be dipped in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for a few seconds.

Reproduction of elkberry by tops

You can root raspberries from cuttings in the fall using layering. Reproduction is carried out as follows:

  1. In August, one of the lower young shoots of the bush is bent to the ground.
  2. The top is buried in a shallow trench to a depth of 20 cm.
  3. Fix the shoot so that it does not straighten.
  4. For the rest of the season, the cuttings are regularly watered, and with the onset of autumn they are properly insulated.

When using this propagation method, Ezhmalina will sprout in early spring. When the shoots reach a height of about 15 cm and are sufficiently strong, they can be separated from the main bush and moved to a permanent place.

Attention! If desired, the reproduction procedure is allowed in the spring. In this case, it will be possible to replant the shoots with the onset of autumn.

One shoot of raspberry, when propagated by the tips, can produce several sprouts at once

Caring for young plantings

After propagating raspberries by cuttings in the fall or spring, it is necessary to provide high-quality care for the developing plants. It comes down to several procedures:

  1. Watering. The plant should be moistened immediately after planting and then every two weeks in the absence of natural precipitation. You cannot overwater the cuttings, as their roots may rot.
  2. Feeding.For the first time, you need to fertilize the raspberries two years after planting young plants in a permanent place. Fertilizing is carried out three times per season, using standard complex minerals and organic matter.
  3. Garter. As the raspberries grow, it is necessary to install supports or trellises no lower than 2-3 m. The shoots of the plant are long and flexible, without support they will sag and break under the weight of the berries.
  4. Trimming. From the second year of life, young shrubs must undergo sanitary and shaping pruning. Every autumn, dry, weakened and twisted branches are removed from the plant.

With the onset of cold weather, the shoots of young shrubs must be bent to the ground and covered with peat, straw, fallen leaves, and spruce branches. With the onset of spring, the insulating material is removed so that the raspberries do not rot.

Conclusion

You can propagate Ezhmalina using several vegetative methods. The crop takes root well on the site and does not require special care, although the bushes need to be watered and pruned regularly.
