Garden Ezhemalina: description of varieties, photos, reviews

Varieties of raspberry differ in different yields, taste, color, and size of berries. When choosing, it is necessary to take into account winter hardiness: some species tolerate frosts down to -30 degrees, others require mandatory shelter even in central Russia.

Characteristics of the raspberry

Ezhemalina is a hybrid obtained from crossing different varieties of raspberries and blackberries. It reaches a height of 3–4 m, and the stems often spread along the ground, so they are tied to a trellis. Without a garter they grow no more than 50–60 cm. The shoots are often covered with thorns, although there are varieties without them.

The plant bears fruit on last year's shoots, which must be taken into account when pruning. The berries are quite large, always larger than raspberries. The weight reaches from 4 to 14 g, which also depends on the variety. The shape of the fruit is elongated, symmetrical. The color of the raspberry depends on the variety: it can be red, crimson, but more often blackberry (dark blue, closer to black). On average, one bush produces up to 4–5 kg.

Raspberry berries appear from July to the end of August. The entire harvest can be harvested before frost. The taste of the berries resembles both raspberries and blackberries, representing a cross between these two crops. There is always noticeable sourness, the degree of which depends on both the variety and growing conditions.

Ezhemalina often produces abundant root shoots. It also propagates using root cuttings and crowns. At the same time, the shrub is unpretentious: it can be grown in almost all regions of Russia. Standard care - watering, fertilizing, careful pruning, weeding and loosening the soil.

The taste and color of the raspberry resembles both raspberries and blackberries.

Types of raspberries

The culture is a hybrid, so not separate species are distinguished, but only varieties. The most common are:

  1. Tayberry.
  2. Loganberry.
  3. Boysenberry.

Conventionally, culture can be divided into two types:

  • with spikes;
  • without thorns.

Several dozen varieties of this berry are known: they are grown in cultivation, including in Russia.

The best varieties of ezhemalina

There are different varieties of raspberry - with and without thorns, with black or red berries. The best varieties are selected for taste, yield, and winter hardiness. Optimal varieties include Texas, Cumberland, Merry Berry and others.

Texas

Texas (Texas) is a tall variety (up to 4 m) with flexible shoots creeping along the ground. It has good immunity to diseases and moderate winter hardiness. It produces fairly large berries (up to 10 g) with a very pleasant sweet and sour taste, reminiscent of raspberries. At the same time, many thorns form on the shoots, which must be taken into account when caring.

Ezhemalina Texas bears fruit for 15 years, the average yield is 4–5 kg per specimen

Boysenberry

Boysenberry is an American hybrid obtained in the 30s of the 20th century. Named after the breeder R.Boysen's. Medium ripening period: mid-July – early August. Fruiting is not extended, the entire harvest can be harvested in 1–2 times. The fruits are dark cherry in color, then turn black. The pulp is very juicy and tender, the taste is refined, balanced, with a pleasant berry aroma.

The shoots spread along the ground and grow up to 2–3 m. They require tying to a trellis and regular pruning. Another feature is that the plant produces a lot of root growth, which must be removed periodically.

Boysenberry bush yield is average: 3–4 kg

Cumberland

Cumberland is a low-growing variety that grows up to 1.5–2 m. The shoots are curved, arched, and covered with thorns. The fruits of the raspberries are very small: the average weight is 2–3 g. At the same time, the yield is moderate and high: 4–6 kg per plant. Fruiting is extended, occurring in the second half of summer.

Cumberland produces sweet berries with a subtle blackberry flavor

Merry Berry

Merry Berry is a variety of blackberry with a distinct blackberry flavor (not noticeable raspberry notes). In tasting assessments, its taste qualities are considered standard. The shoots are thorny, so caring for the bush is not so easy. At the same time, the berries are not only tasty, but also quite large (weight up to 8 g). Another advantage is early maturation. The yield is moderate, comparable to raspberries: 3–4 kg per bush.

Merry Berry berries ripen from late June to mid-July

Marionberry

Marionberry is another hybrid with a standard taste. Sweet tones and delicate sourness are noticeable, and the blackberry aroma is pronounced. The berries are medium-sized, weighing about 4–5 g. A vigorous variety, the shoots reach a length of 6 m, spreading along the ground. The branches are covered with thorns.

When grown on an industrial scale, Marionberry yield reaches 7.5–10 t/ha

Important! This is one of the best commercial varieties. But it can also be cultivated in private households.

Silvan

Silvan is another creeping variety covered with thorns. It has good resistance to diseases and pests, but requires winter shelter. A variety of early ripening - the harvest is harvested from early July to mid-August. It is distinguished by very large berries of a rich burgundy color (weighing up to 14 g).

The average yield of the Silvan variety reaches 4–5 kg per bush

Marion

Marion is an American variety that began to be grown in the mid-50s of the last century. A creeping shrub, the branches grow up to six meters in length. Covered with small sharp thorns. Berries with dense pulp, black, medium size (weight about 5 g). The taste is standard - sweet, with rich tones of blackberries and raspberries. The fruity aroma is well expressed.

Marion's yield reaches 10 kg per bush

Varieties of raspberries without thorns

Some varieties of raspberries are thornless. This is especially convenient for both caring for shrubs and harvesting. The most popular varieties include Buckingham, Loganberry Thornless and Black Satin.

Buckingham

Buckingham – the name of this raspberry variety is associated with Buckingham Palace. It was bred in the UK in 1996. Buckingham is close to the Tyberry variety, but produces larger berries (length reaching 8 cm, weight up to 15 g). The taste is balanced, sweet and sour, with a pronounced aroma.

The bushes are quite tall, reaching 2–2.5 m. The first fruits are produced 2–3 years after planting. The berries of this raspberry variety ripen from July to mid-August without obvious waves (extended fruiting).

Important! In the conditions of central Russia, Buckingham bushes need protection for the winter. To do this, the roots are mulched, and the plant itself is covered with leaves, straw, and covered with burlap, spruce branches or agrofibre.

Buckingham produces large, rich red berries

Loganberry Thornless

Loganberry Thornless produces large, conical, pure black fruits. This is a late raspberry variety: the berries ripen from late August to early October, although flowering occurs, as usual, in June. The taste is very pleasant, somewhat reminiscent of mulberry. The pulp is juicy, sweet, with a rich aroma. The fruits are very large, weighing up to 15 g. At the same time, the bushes are decorative and can be used to make an attractive hedge.

Loganberry Thornless berries have a dense skin, which allows the crop to be transported over long distances.

Black Satin

Black Satin is another thornless variety with small (4–7 g) black berries. The taste is pleasant, with pronounced sweetness. Ripening later - from mid-August to the end of September. The bushes are vigorous, reaching 5–7 m in height. Black Satin is a high-yielding raspberry variety. Mature plants produce up to 15–20 kg in one season. Therefore, the crop is suitable for cultivation not only in private farms, but also for sale.

Black Satin is one of the most productive species

Varieties of garden raspberries for the Moscow region and central Russia

When choosing a seedling, it is very important to take into account its winter hardiness. The best varieties of raspberry for the Moscow region and other regions of the middle zone are Loganberry, Tayberry and Darrow.

Loganberry

Loganberry produces berries with a pleasant sweet and sour taste. The size of the fruit is average (reach 5–6 g), the shape is very elongated, almost cylindrical. The taste is good: the pulp is juicy, with sweet and sour notes. Keeping quality and transportability are low, so the species is not suitable for industrial cultivation.

Loganberry yields up to 10 kg per bush

Tayberry

Tayberry is a Scottish hybrid of medium vigor, reaching a height of 2 m. The stems are covered with small thorns. The fruits are large - about 10 g. Ripening begins in early July, so Tayberry is classified as an early variety of raspberry. Fruiting is uneven, so 4–5 harvests are carried out per season. Frost resistance is moderate - the shrub can be grown both in the Moscow region and in neighboring regions.

Tayberry yield reaches 3–4 kg per bush

Darrow

Darrow is a productive variety, yielding up to 10 kg per bush. The berries are small – 3–4 g, with a pleasant sweetness and slight sourness in taste. The shoots are straight, reach a height of 3 m, and require garter. Both the fruits and leaves of the plant are used for food and are brewed as tea.

Darrow is one of the most productive specimens

Conclusion

Ezhmalina varieties are suitable for growing in the Moscow region and other regions of the middle zone. Most varieties produce consistently high yields and are not very demanding in terms of care. Many shrubs are covered with thorns, so you only need to work with them wearing thick gloves.

Reviews of varieties of raspberries

Irina Pimenova, 49 years old, Smolensk
When I found out about the existence of the Tayberry raspberry and planted it, I realized that this was the best option. The bushes have been growing in the garden for five years. The harvest is at least 3-4 kg, even if the summer is cloudy. The berries are burgundy, have a very rich taste, moderately sweet, with barely noticeable sourness. The bushes are unpretentious - I feed them with organic matter a couple of times over the summer.
Ekaterina Sagalaeva, 58 years old, Ryazan
I grow several varieties of raspberry - Tyberry, Merry Berry and Marionberry. The berries are juicy and taste like a fruit mix. To say that this is just a mixture of raspberries and blackberries would be an understatement. The raspberry aroma is more powerful, and the taste is balanced. Growing bushes in the garden is no more difficult than cultivating ordinary raspberries.
