Rose Kahala is an exquisite plant used to decorate holiday bouquets. For its high decorative properties, the variety is popular in many countries. However, it requires care and compliance with all agricultural practices.
Origin story
Kahala is a young culture. It is interesting that the name of the rose is translated from Belarusian as “loved”. However, the variety was bred in the Hawaiian Islands, far from local latitudes. The plant got its name in honor of a rich house in Honolulu. Sometimes you can find another name for it - “Kohala”. But it is not correct from a botanical point of view.
Description and characteristics of the Kahala rose
Hybrid tea rose Kahala prefers regions with hot climates. Under natural conditions it can grow in Africa and Hawaii. The flowers stand out well against the background of the bush and have a bright, soft pink hue. A whitish “filling” is concentrated in the center of the rose.
Splendor is a distinctive feature of this culture. During the growth period, large buds are formed.Due to the small stem area, Kahala has a sophisticated appearance. Florists make huge bouquets of roses. When combined with other colors, the emphasis is placed on them.
After cutting the stem, the rose stays in the vase for a long time. If the plant was presented as a bouquet, you can first enjoy its appearance, and only then use it for propagation. Despite the heat-loving nature, the Kahala variety can also be grown in Russia. For this you will need a greenhouse.
The flower resembles velvet to the touch; one bud contains several dozen petals. During the growing season, the rose exudes a weak but pleasant aroma. The buds are large, about 11 cm in diameter. The stem grows slowly and rarely exceeds 110 cm in height. The leaves are covered with a glossy dark green shell.
When composing a bouquet, florists recommend using a variety with crocus. If the Kahala rose is grown in the garden, it is combined with other roses, spruce or juniper. For normal growth, a distance of 150 cm is maintained between plants.
Rose Kahala is a double peony crop. The gap between the petals is small, so the bud is packed very tightly. As they open, the petals first outline an intricate shape and then curl. The middle portion stays in place while the edges curve outward.
The stem of the rose grows straight, it is tall and slender. The shoots are not afraid of mechanical contact and are suitable for cutting. The foliage is long and wide, but there is little of it. In greenhouse conditions, Russian gardeners manage to grow Kahal up to 95 cm in height and 55 cm in width.
Flowering begins in mid-April, later in cold climates. The period lasts until August, then the plant “falls asleep.” If treated well, the Kahala rose can open as early as September and last until frost sets in. At this time, careful care is necessary: regular watering, adding additives, increasing the temperature, and pruning.
The plant has a close relative - the Kahala White rose. This is a culture similar in structure and characteristics. The difference lies only in color.
If the variety never produces flowers, this may be due to the following reasons:
- the ground is too hard;
- pest attack;
- disease damage;
- insufficient watering;
- abundance of moisture;
- lack of fertilizing.
To breathe life into roses, they use insecticides, medications, and follow the rules of care.
Advantages and disadvantages
Kahala roses look harmonious with other shrubs. It is a lush, repeat-flowering plant with moderate disease resistance.
Pros:
- good frost resistance (up to -22 ° C);
- decorativeness;
- large bud size;
- compactness.
The plant has one disadvantage - if the rules of care are violated, the crop will not be able to form a flower.
Recommendations for cultivation
First you need to determine the timing of planting. Rose Kahala is planted in the warm spring season, when the thermometer begins to show a temperature of +10 °C. In central Russia, work is carried out in April-May.
Roses need sunlight, so they are placed in open areas. Planting in partial shade is allowed.
It is fertilized in equal concentrations with sand, turf and peat. The roots are carefully straightened, trying not to damage the shoots. The grafting bud is deepened into the ground at a distance of up to 9 cm.
The plant will not delight you with abundant flowering if you do not take care of it. In spring, watering is carried out once every seven days. As soon as the top layer becomes dry, the soil is immediately moistened. In summer, watering is reduced to once every 14 days. In hot weather, Kahala is irrigated with a spray bottle. At the end of summer, at the beginning of autumn, they moisten less often, as young shoots may form and take away the juice.
Mineral supplements are applied two weeks after planting. Feed once every seven days. They use substances containing potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus.
Pruning is carried out in advance before transplanting to a new area. The best time to work is March or April, but summer is also possible. The top shoots are removed from the Kahala rose.
Reproduction methods
Cajal roses can be propagated in two ways - seeds or seedlings. The first is almost never practiced, since planting material rarely sprouts.If we take into account the peculiarities of the Russian climate, success becomes unlikely. In addition, the variety is a hybrid, so it is unknown which parental qualities will be passed on to the offspring.
Usually the plant is propagated by seedlings. They can be purchased at garden stores or online. It is worth asking what properties the plant had in order to prepare for the results in advance.
Diseases and pests
Kahala has average immunity, which can weaken if treated poorly. Aphids are the main enemy of shrubs. To prevent its spread, preventive protective measures are taken.
If the crop has already been attacked by pests, the bush is treated with insecticides. As a rule, they give results within the first week.
Application in landscape design
The Kahala variety is used to create landscape decorations. Along with the variety, shrubs that bloom in a different period are bred. For example, the plant harmonizes well with muscari, thuja and crocuses. White Kahal roses are combined with conifers. They are used for planting in open areas or in flower beds.
Designers advise decorating entrances to verandas and the borders of arched structures with roses.
Conclusion
Rose Kahala is a spectacular ornamental plant.It is used for landscaping park areas and alleys, as well as for creating bouquets. If you do not neglect care, the crop will be able to bloom a second and even a third time.
