Rose floribunda Angela: photo and description, reviews

Blooming floribunda Angela evokes associations with ancient roses. However, the original shape of the flower and the buds that continuously open for 2-3 months are far from its only advantage. Rose Angela has been steadily “in demand” for several decades due to its resistance to most negative “external” influences, good immunity and relative ease of care.

History of selection

Rose Angela or Angela is sold in some countries under the name Angelica or Angelica. Bred in Germany, belongs to the floribunda class. This is an achievement of the breeders of the world famous nursery with a very solid reputation - Kordes.

The variety is quite old; “stable” characteristics were achieved in 1975. However, it received national certification only in 1982, when it was given the “code” name KORday. International “recognition” had to wait another six years: the corresponding certificate was received at an exhibition in Paris.

The “parents” of the rose Angela were the British polyanthus variety Yesterday from the Harkness nursery and the hybrid tea Peter Frankenfeld.The latter was also created by Cordes specialists.

Description and characteristics of the Angel rose

Depending on the local climate, Angela looks completely different. In central Russia and more severe conditions, it is a rather lush, but “slender” bush with erect shoots. Its height reaches 1.2-1.5 m, diameter - approximately 1 m.

In the subtropical southern regions, Angela turns into a climber with powerful but flexible shoots 2-3 m long. Or even into a climbing rose, whose arched stems stretch 5-6 m.

Its stems are densely leafy and covered with sparse small thorns. The leaf blades are large and have a rich green hue typical for the crop. They cannot be called matte, but the glossy tint in the sun is not too noticeable.

Regardless of the appearance of the bush, rose Angela demonstrates high growth rates

However, the main advantage of the Angela rose is, of course, its flowering. The variety belongs to the category of remontant and fully justifies this characteristic. Not every remontant rose is characterized by such continuity and abundance of flowering. In temperate climates, buds open from mid-June to the end of September. In the south - from the second ten days of May to at least the end of October (often until the first frost).

The buds are collected in inflorescences of 5-10 pieces, occasionally there are brushes of 20-27 pieces. They open up gradually. Each of them “lives” for 12-15 days, the entire inflorescence – 20-25 days. The flowers are small (5-7 cm in diameter), semi-double.

The bright scarlet bud of the Angela rose opens slowly and not completely, turning into a pastel pink cup-shaped “antique” flower. The definition of “romantic rose” suits her very well.The texture of the petals seems to be “satin”; in the sun a pearlescent tint appears.

The delicate shade of Angela’s petals contrasts effectively with their crimson-raspberry underside.

Angela rose flowers have a faint, light and unobtrusive aroma. Experts believe that it is predominantly fruity and apple, although some gardeners detect “soapy” notes.

The decorative appearance of Angela's flowers during the season is not affected by any external influences. They retain their color and shape in direct sunlight, in hot weather, in strong gusts of wind, and in frequent heavy rains.

Important! In terms of cold resistance, Angela rose belongs to USDA zone 5. This means that it overwinters without damage at a temperature of -23-29 ºС, if it is provided with shelter.

Advantages and disadvantages

Angela has several namesakes: a miniature one with goblet-shaped flowers from the Italian nursery Motta and a French scrub bred by specialists from the rose growing company Lens. However, in terms of popularity, they are much inferior to the German floribunda, so there should be no confusion when purchasing.

Unlike many semi-double roses, Angela retains its decorative effect for at least a week after cutting.

Pros:

  • the ability of the bush to vary its appearance, adapting to different climatic conditions;
  • wide possibilities of use in landscape design;
  • cold resistance sufficient for many Russian regions;
  • the presence of immunity against the most dangerous diseases for the culture;
  • a small number of thorns on the stems;
  • abundance and duration of flowering;
  • unusual shape, spectacular coloring of flowers;
  • preservation of their decorative effect under any vagaries of weather;
  • suitability for cutting.

Minuses:

  • demands on the fertility of the substrate and regularity of watering;
  • the need for timely pruning;
  • lack of pronounced aroma.

Planting and caring for the Angel rose

It is best to plant the Angela rose on a small hill. Here the plant will receive enough sunlight and heat, and the risk of moisture stagnation at the roots will be minimized.

Direct sunlight and not the strongest wind will not harm Angela’s bushes

Planting is carried out both in spring and autumn. They take into account both their own preferences and the characteristics of the local climate.

Important! In group plantings, leave at least a meter between bushes. When forming a hedge or other vertical landscaping - 60-80 cm.

Caring for rose Angela includes the following procedures:

  1. Watering. The substrate should be moistened moderately, allowing it to dry 3-4 cm deep (on average twice a week). The approximate norm is 8-10 liters per bush. Rose Angela reacts very positively to evening sprinkling.
  2. Weeding and loosening. Both procedures are carried out as needed, 2-3 times a month, the day after watering. However, you can avoid them if you fill the flowerbed with mulch immediately after planting.
  3. Feeding. In the spring, nitrogen mineral fertilizers are applied at the “green cone” stage. Next - from the moment of bud formation until the end of flowering - complex preparations for feeding roses, which can be alternated with folk remedies. Frequency – once every 2-2.5 weeks.
  4. Trimming. Sanitary pruning of the Angela rose is carried out twice per season, formative pruning is carried out in the spring, before it “wake up”.
  5. Shelter for the winter. Whether it is needed at all and what it should look like, the gardener decides based on the cold resistance of the Angela rose and the characteristics of the local climate.Most often, it is enough to simply fill the base of the bush with peat or humus, creating a “mound” 25-30 cm high and wrap the stems with covering material.

The abundance and continuity of flowering of the Angela rose requires a regular supply of nutrients

Important! The degree of pruning of the Angela rose, if done correctly, has virtually no effect on the abundance of its flowering.

Features of reproduction

To preserve the varietal characteristics of the Angela rose, it is propagated only by vegetative methods. In principle, it is possible to divide the bush, but this is a labor-intensive task. In addition, there is always a risk of losing a single copy, rather than getting several new ones. Therefore, most often they resort to cuttings.

The best time to harvest planting material is June. Angela rose cuttings - shoot tips 10-12 cm long with 2-3 growth buds and without buds. The lower cut is made obliquely, the leaf plates are shortened by half.

Next, the cuttings are rooted according to the standard procedure:

  1. Soak for 2-3 hours in the root formation stimulator solution. Or sprinkle the lower cut with a powdered preparation with a similar effect.
  2. Plant at a slight angle in separate containers. In the south, they are often planted directly into closed ground (greenhouse, hotbed). The substrate should combine looseness, average fertility and neutral pH. You can also root in water, but you will have to change it every day and wash the container.
  3. Provide a “greenhouse effect” and daylight hours of 10-12 hours. Control the humidity of the substrate, not allowing it to dry out, but also not over-watering it.

The floribunda rose Angela takes 3-4 weeks to root. If it was carried out at home, the cuttings are grown during the winter and transferred to the flowerbed next spring.In a greenhouse or greenhouse in the southern regions, they can be transplanted to a permanent place in early autumn.

The appearance of new leaves indicates that rooting was successful.

Important! When transplanted into a flowerbed in the fall, the Angela rose will bloom next year, in the spring - only after a season.

Diseases and pests

Breeders have provided the Angela rose with innate immunity to the most dangerous diseases for the crop - powdery mildew and black spot. The practice of its cultivation, including by Russian gardeners, shows that it rarely “catch” other fungal diseases. To avoid infection by pathogens, two preventive treatments with fungicides are sufficient - when the bush is just “waking up” after winter and at the end of flowering.

Rose Angela is not particularly interesting to pests. However, in the event of “mass” attacks on the garden, they will not bypass it. Most often, roseate scale insects and leaf rollers appear on bushes. For prevention, in mid-spring the bushes are sprayed with suitable insecticides. During the season, they are regularly inspected, and treatments are repeated if pests are noticed on the Angela rose or on other plants in the garden.

Application in landscape design

The soft pink “cloud” into which the Angel rose turns during flowering looks very impressive in the garden “surrounded” by a well-groomed green lawn. In the southern regions, where it grows as a climbing rose, and not as a fairly compact bush, it is actively used for vertical landscape design, decorating the walls of gazebos, open verandas, decorative trellises, and fences.

In a small flower bed, the Angel rose will inevitably become the center of the composition.Successful “companions” will be any low flowering annuals, for example, violas, daisies, petunias, as well as decorative foliage ground cover plants.

Rose Angela looks especially interesting if you choose “neighbors” in white-yellow-blue-violet colors

In more “large-scale” compositions, the Angela rose is combined with:

  • decorative conifers;
  • euonymus;
  • holly;
  • maple;
  • hydrangea;
  • rhododendron.
Important! It is best to choose plants with dark, rich shades of leaves and needles. Against this background, rose Angela looks especially advantageous.

Conclusion

Rose Angela retains the presentability of its flowers in extreme heat, cloudy cool weather, and after heavy rains. For several months it resembles a soft pink “cloud”. This variety can be recommended to not particularly experienced rose growers.

Reviews from gardeners about the Angel rose

Elena Starostina, Orel
In the extensive collection (about 100 varieties), the Angela rose is one of the most beloved. I really like the original shape of the flowers. During flowering, nothing can spoil its appearance - neither rain, nor heat, nor wind. The bush overwinters without problems; it gets by with sanitary pruning and minimal care.
Valentina Azarenko, Krasnodar
I can confidently recommend the rose Angela to both the most discerning rose grower and the beginner. She is very neat, undemanding in care, and does not get sick. The flowers are simply charming: unusual in shape, delicate in color, the bushes are literally strewn with them from top to bottom for 2.5-3 months.
Alla Takhirova, Perm
Not all roses survive in our climate, but Angela is a successful exception. I have never regretted purchasing it. The bush is completely “unkillable”. There were no problems with diseases, pests, or wintering.The abundance of flowering and decorativeness of Angela rose flowers does not suffer in any way from the weather during the summer.
