Lily OT-hybrid Frontera: description and photos, reviews

The Frontera lily is a showy variety that is sometimes called the "aristocratic" lily. The plant attracts the attention of gardeners around the world. It is used by both designers and florists. Lily flowers make luxurious and fragrant bouquets.

History of appearance

The species was recorded in Holland in 2012. The originator was Marklily, which is engaged in the development of ornamental crops. The plant is a hybrid. Parent varieties are oriental and trumpet lilies.

Frontera can coexist with most annuals, roses and other lilies

Description of Frontera lily with photo

Frontera has a straight, strong stem with a dark green color. The foliage is located evenly throughout the bush, quite dense, greenish-yellow in color. The root system is shaped like an onion. The surface of the sheet is glossy, smooth, without notches.

Veins are clearly visible on the leaf

The buds are oblong and open alternately during flowering. Up to 15 voluminous flowers are formed on one peduncle. Their diameter exceeds 20 cm, so the plant is classified as large-flowered. The structure is simple, funnel-shaped. Frontera grows in one place for about four years.

Flower growers fell in love with the lily for its soft pink petals. They are cream colored at the edges. The palette is complemented by red splashes, green tongues and small burgundy lines in the middle. From the side, the long stamens are clearly visible. The aroma is weak but pleasant, slightly reminiscent of tropical fruits.

Under a layer of mulch, Frontera can easily survive the Russian winter. Landing in the Far North is not possible. The culture can withstand negative temperatures down to -32 °C. Lily is an OT hybrid, so she has strong immunity.

Complexes based on nitrogen or potassium are used as additives for Frontera lilies.

Attention! Basically, the variety gets sick due to insufficient care. Pests rarely bother you. As a rule, they become ants and aphids.

Frontera Lily Height

The variety has impressive dimensions. Frontera does not stop growing throughout its life. Adult specimens reach up to 1.4 m, but some gardeners have managed to grow giant lilies 2.5 m high.

Due to its rapid development, botanists call the plant a mini-tree.

Features of flowering

Frontera begins to bloom late. The buds open in mid-to-late summer. Up to 15 peduncles are formed. The sepals contain six oblong petals. The lower ones curl towards the roots, the upper ones are even.

The buds open one after another, so it seems that the lily is blooming the entire period. To increase the number and volume of flowers, you need to choose a sunny area with rich, well-drained soil. Flowering duration is a month.

Advantages and disadvantages

Frontera exudes a pleasant aroma; florists use it to add emphasis to bouquets. Unique decorative properties make it possible to decorate gardens, parks and alleys with lilies.

Frontera lilies are not afraid of the scorching sun, unlike other plants, they do not change color due to ultraviolet radiation

Pros:

  • large flower diameter;
  • frost resistance;
  • strong immunity;
  • fast growth.

The lily has one disadvantage - the variety is suitable for cultivation only by experienced gardeners. Beginners often have difficulties in the care process, as this is a demanding plant.

Planting and care

The Frontera lily is not used as an indoor flower. Planted in open ground in mid-spring or autumn. The bulbs are disinfected with a manganese-based solution. The hole should not be large - up to 16 cm.

Nutrient-rich soil is placed at the bottom

After planting, lilies require a lot of moisture. Watering is done several times a day, especially in hot weather. The place should be open to sunlight, but protected from drafts. Experts recommend choosing the eastern side.

Subsequent care consists of fertilizing and regular watering. Lilies are fed during flowering twice a year - in spring and summer. After replanting, the soil is not changed for two weeks. During the growing season, not only the soil, but also the leaves are sprayed.

The Frontera variety is prepared for winter by pruning. Stems up to 12 cm high are left above the ground. Arranging a shelter is necessary if severe cold weather is expected, in other cases it is not required.

Reproduction

The easiest way to propagate a lily is by dividing the rhizome or bulbs. Seeds are used less often - they are grown by professionals, since the variety is very capricious. In the early stages, special care and attention is required.

The bulb is separated only from the adult plant.From the main rhizome - no less than four years after planting, otherwise the crop will not take root.

Reviews

Anna Guskevich, St. Petersburg
The big disadvantage of the Frontera lily is its demands on the soil in which it grows. It does not live in one place for a long time, since the earth depletes all nutrients. If the area is small, this may be difficult. The plant is still very voluminous.
Inga Alieva, Neftekamsk
In harsh Russian conditions it can be difficult to grow ornamental crops. With great difficulty and with the help of a gardener friend, I still managed to propagate the Frontera lily. This is one of the most beautiful varieties I have come across. It is not surprising that the plant requires regular care.
