Strawberry variety Kamrad Winner: description and photo

Strawberry Kamrad Pobeditel is a bright representative of large-fruited varieties. The outstanding size of the berries is successfully complemented by their taste. The list of advantages of the variety is not limited to external presentability, but it is not without significant disadvantages. Therefore, this species is rarely found in garden plots.

Origin story

Kamrad the Winner (Kamerad Der Gewinner) is a strawberry variety that is rare not only in Russia. Therefore, there is no comprehensive information about its origin. What is known for certain is that his homeland is Germany. The variety was developed by breeders from the GDR in the mid-80s of the 20th century.

Characteristics and description of strawberries of the Kamrad Pobeditel variety

Comrade Pobeditel is a non-repairing strawberry of universal use, classified as one of the so-called giant varieties. It is distinguished by its endurance and “plasticity”, it can adapt to different climatic conditions, and survive the vagaries of the weather without harm.

Appearance and taste of berries

The bushes of the Kamrad Pobeditel strawberry are powerful, spreading, growing up to 35-40 cm in height and 45-50 cm in diameter. There are many leaves in the rosette, they are large, dense to the touch, even slightly leathery, with a pronounced “corrugation”.

On an adult strawberry bush, Kamrad Pobeditel, an average of 2-4 (less often 5-6) flower stalks are formed. The number of berries on them varies from 1-2 to 8-10 pieces.

The flower stalks are powerful, strong, raised above the rosette of leaves, but under the weight of the berries they gradually bend, almost lying on the ground

The weight of the Kamrad Winner strawberry is 40-100 g. Mostly the berries are comb-shaped, as if fused, but there are also specimens of a regular wide-cone shape. There is no “neck”, the seeds are small and not pressed into the pulp.

There are no voids in the pulp, despite the large size of the berries

The skin of the berries of the Kamrad Pobeditel variety is painted in a “classic” strawberry-red color with a glossy sheen. The pulp is pink-red, dense, but fleshy and tender, very juicy, with a pronounced aroma. It tastes sweet, but without cloying or blandness - there is also a light refreshing sourness. There is nothing outstanding in this regard in the Kamrad Pobeditel strawberry, but the taste is very decent.

Important! Strawberry Kamrad Winner does not need frequent renewal of plantings. The productive life of one bush is 7-8 years.

Flowering period, ripening period and yield

Strawberry Kamrad Winner in central Russia is classified as a mid-late variety. However, in different regions, the ripening time of berries shifts noticeably depending on the local climate, so in the south of Russia it is naturally considered mid-season or even mid-early.The Kamrad Winner strawberry blooms in the last ten days of June or early May. The harvest is harvested around mid-July.

There are a few berries on the strawberry bushes Kamrad Pobeditel. This is easily explained by their large size. Accordingly, the yield is low. In optimal conditions and with quality care, it reaches 1-1.2 kg per bush. But the average is noticeably lower - 0.5-0.8 kg.

You can’t count on record harvests of large berries

Important! Due to the low yield, the Kamrad Pobeditel strawberry is not suitable for cultivation on an industrial scale.

Frost resistance

The cold resistance of the Kamrad Pobeditel strawberry is not bad. If enough snow falls, it winters without damage at temperatures down to -30 °C, in seasons with little snow - down to -20-25 °C. The plants are quite hardy - even if the above-ground part or root system freezes, they are restored during the next season.

In spring, the Kamrad Pobeditel strawberry blooms quite late, which reduces the risk of the buds getting hit by return frosts

Important! Strawberry Kamrad Winner is heat and drought resistant. In the south of Russia, it successfully ripens at a temperature of 35-40 ° C without loss in yield and quality of berries.

Resistance to diseases and pests

There is no data on the presence of “innate” immunity in the Kamrad Winner strawberry. But the experience of gardeners shows that it is extremely rarely affected by fungi and other pathogenic microflora.

However, plantings need protection from pests that have a special love for the variety. Fruiting of the Kamrad Pobeditel strawberry is one-time, but very extended, since the berries take a long time to ripen.

If preventive measures are not taken, birds, slugs, insects, and rodents will have time to “taste” the harvest.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

It cannot be denied that the Kamrad Pobeditel strawberry has significant advantages. But it also has serious disadvantages that prevent its widespread use in household plots.

pros

Minuses

General endurance and “stress resistance” of plants, ability to tolerate prolonged heat and drought

Unsuitable for cultivation on an industrial scale

Standard agricultural technology

Entry into fruiting only in the second season after planting

Good keeping quality and transportability

Demanding on the quality of the substrate and regular feeding

Long productive life of bushes

Low yield compared to most other varieties and hybrids, small number of peduncles

Very impressive appearance and large size of berries

“Competition” from slugs, insects, birds, rodents, who often manage to try the berries first

Good taste, sweet, sugary and aromatic pulp

Rarity of the variety (means problems with purchasing planting material)

The versatility of the fruit's purpose

No voids in strawberries

For gardeners, the Kamrad Pobeditel strawberry is a kind of “museum exhibit”

Landing rules

Due to the “large size” of the rosettes, a minimum of 50 cm is left between the Kamrad Pobeditel strawberry bushes, keeping the row spacing within 50-70 cm. They are planted in an open, but protected from drafts place. The optimal substrate is sandy loam or loam, which combines nutritional value with looseness and “softness”. The soil should have a neutral or slightly acidic pH.In the process of digging up a bed for Kamrad Pobeditel strawberries, it is advisable to “enrich” the substrate with humus (4-5 l/m²) and complex fertilizer for garden strawberries (15-20 g/m²).

Kamrad Pobeditel strawberries become noticeably smaller when there is a lack of light

Plant Kamrad Pobeditel strawberries in holes with a depth and diameter of 15-20 cm. A handful of sand is thrown to the bottom, ensuring drainage. Fertile soil is poured on top, filling the hole about a third (you can mix it with fertilizer), and spill with water. After planting, the substrate is well moistened and the soil is mulched.

The main thing in the planting process is not to cover the “heart” with soil.

Important! For more uniform illumination of plantings, it is recommended to place the beds from north to south.

Features of care

Caring for strawberries Kamrad Winner does not require much experience from the gardener. It includes:

  1. Watering. In hot weather, the substrate is moistened once every 2-3 days, in cool weather - half as often. A bush uses 5-6 liters of water.
  2. Feeding. 10-15 days after the first leaves appear, the Kamrad Pobeditel strawberries are watered with a solution of mineral nitrogen fertilizer. At the budding stage, at the end of flowering and 2-3 weeks after harvesting, apply any store-bought preparation for garden strawberries. To maintain soil fertility, humus is distributed over the garden bed every 2-3 years in the spring.
  3. Prevention of pest attacks. Insects are quite effectively repelled by herbs planted nearby. Special traps are used against rodents and slugs. The only thing that will protect Kamrad the Winner’s strawberries from birds is a net stretched over the garden bed.
  4. Mulching. It allows the gardener to avoid loosening and weeding the beds and increase the intervals between waterings. At the same time, the mulch protects the Kamrad Pobeditel strawberries from rotting, preventing them from lying on the ground.
  5. Removing the mustache. They are left only on bushes chosen for propagation this season. On other bushes, the mustache is cut off so that all the nutrients are directed to the ripening of the berries.
  6. Preparing for winter. Includes loosening the soil, replacing mulch, trimming leaves, and covering the soil. It is advisable to cover the bed with Kamrad Pobeditel strawberries with coniferous branches or cover it with agrofibre.

Any method of watering is suitable, excluding drops from getting on the buds, flowers and ovaries

Reproduction

To propagate the Kamrad Pobeditel strawberry, a method provided by nature itself is used - rooting the mustache. There are only a few of them, but they are very powerful and thick.

To obtain strong and hardy daughter rosettes on one mother strawberry bush, Kamrad Pobeditel, leave a maximum of 2-3 tendrils, “dropping” them into pots with fertile substrate and watering them abundantly during the summer. Other tendrils and buds are cut off so that the plant does not waste energy on them.

By autumn, new rosettes are separated from the mother plant. “Quality criteria” for planting material are the presence of 3-5 leaves, a diameter of at least 6-8 cm and an intact apical bud.

Absolutely healthy, adult (over 3 years old), high-yielding plants are chosen as “donors”.

Important! To propagate Kamrad Pobeditel strawberries, only first-order rosettes, closest to the mother bush, are used.

Conclusion

Strawberry Kamrad Pobeditel is a rare variety, suitable more for “collectors” and exotic lovers than for “average” gardeners.Among its undoubted advantages are the large size and good taste of the berries, relative ease of care and good overall endurance. However, it cannot boast of high productivity; it does not begin to bear fruit immediately. The strawberry variety Kamrad Pobeditel also has other disadvantages that prevent its wide distribution in household plots.

Reviews from gardeners about strawberries Kamrad Pobeditel

Svetlana Lozhkina, Samara
Comrade Winner - very tasty strawberries. Unfortunately, birds are also well aware of this, pecking the berries when they just begin to turn pink. Without a protective net, it will not be possible to save the crop. There are no more nuances of care; the variety requires standard agricultural technology.
Andrey Simonyan, Taganrog
Strawberry Comrade The winner in the garden immediately attracts attention. The gigantic size of the berries surprises even experienced gardeners. The taste is also excellent - the flesh is very sweet, juicy and aromatic. Plants tolerate drought well - this is always important for our climate.
Elizaveta Rogova, Ivanovo
In my extensive collection of strawberries, Kamrad Pobeditel is one of the most spectacular varieties. There may be only a few berries on the bush, but they reach the size of a small apple. Their taste is very good - the flesh is tender and sugary, not only in fully ripe, but also in clearly unripe strawberries with a pinkish skin.
