Strawberry Jolie

The favorite of recent seasons has been the strawberry variety selected in Italy – Jolie. Having appeared ten years ago, this variety has not become very widespread and has not gained incredible popularity, but Jolie really deserves attention. This garden strawberry was developed as a productive variety with beautiful and even berries, ideal for sale. Jolie has a lot of advantages for which she is loved and appreciated not only by private summer residents and gardeners, but also by owners of large farms. Strawberries also have some disadvantages, which it is better to know about before purchasing and planting seedlings.

A detailed description of the Jolie strawberry variety, photos and reviews of those who have already planted it on their own plots can be found below. Here we will talk about the recommended planting of this garden strawberry and the care required for it.

Characteristics of Joly strawberries

Scientists from an Italian nursery began working on a new strawberry variety back in 2004. After a series of trials and tests, the new variety was named Jolie and was presented as a variety with medium ripening, high yield and large, beautiful berries.

Attention! Initially, Jolie was developed for large industrial farms involved in growing strawberries for the purpose of selling fresh berries.However, today this variety is actively used by medium and small farms; simple gardeners and summer residents know and love it.

Clery and Darselect are considered the “parents” of the new strawberry, although only some genes are similar in these species. Jolie belongs to the non-repairing varieties, but pleases with long-term fruiting - within three weeks new berries ripen on the bushes, the size of which practically does not change.

Description of the strawberry variety Jolie:

  • strawberries with medium ripening periods - the berries begin to ripen in early June (several days later than the related variety Clery);
  • the bushes are very similar in appearance to Clery, they are spreading and tall;
  • strawberry leaves are large, glossy, slightly drooping;
  • bushes are well leafy;
  • peduncles are located below the level of leaves, they are quite powerful and large;
  • the bushes throw out tendrils, which are how the Jolie strawberry reproduces;
  • The root system of strawberries is powerful and well developed, so the variety is distinguished by its vitality, the seedlings quickly take root after planting in the ground;
  • the berries are large and have the shape of a regular cone;
  • the size of the fruits is almost the same, they weigh about 20-35 grams;
  • towards the end of fruiting, the size of the berries becomes somewhat smaller, but not significantly;
  • strawberries are red in color, have a glossy surface with clearly visible yellow seeds;
  • the neck of the berries is practically absent; at the stage of technical maturity, the tip of the fruit may be white or greenish;
  • when fully ripe, the berries are colored a uniform, rich red color;
  • the pulp of the Jolie strawberry is homogeneous, without cavities, juicy and dense at the same time;
  • The strawberries taste sweet, with a slight sourness, and have a very pleasant aroma;
  • Jolie's taste qualities are highly valued, the variety is considered dessert;
  • the variety is suitable for transportation and short-term storage - the berries do not “drip” or wrinkle;
  • the variety is resistant to diseases of the leaf blade and root rot;
  • The yield of the variety is quite high - at the level of 800-900 grams from each bush.

Important! The productivity of the Jolie variety, of course, varies depending on the growing conditions and region, but strawberries always produce a stable harvest of high-quality berries.

Advantages and disadvantages

Probably, any variety or hybrid has both strengths and weaknesses. Jolie strawberries also have their pros and cons, although reviews from gardeners about the variety are mostly positive.

So, The advantages of the Jolie variety are as follows:

  • multifaceted and very pleasant taste of the berry, which is considered one of the best among the varieties of Italian selection;
  • shape and size of the berries – the strawberries are smooth, quite large, beautiful, with a regular conical shape;
  • good transportability - the berries do not wrinkle, do not leak, and can withstand long-term transportation and storage;
  • immunity to rot and fungal infections of leaves;
  • drought resistance allows you to grow strawberries even in the southern regions, and in the central part of the country Jolie feels excellent;
  • unpretentiousness to growing conditions and soil composition (on poor soils, Jolie only requires more frequent and abundant fertilizing);
  • the variety does not require complex agricultural technology - strawberries require standard care;
  • winter hardiness allows you to safely grow Italian strawberries in Russian winter conditions.

Attention! The average yield of the Jolie variety cannot be called a disadvantage (if we compare it with other foreign hybrids of sweet berries).The productivity of strawberries largely depends on the quantity and, most importantly, on the quality of fertilizing, that is, it is important what kind of fertilizer the gardener uses (humus, nitroammophoska, saltpeter or modern special complexes).

The disadvantages include the low location of the peduncles, as a result of which the berries often come into contact with the soil. However, the Jolie variety is resistant to rot, which means that strawberries in this case are threatened only by insects and the unaesthetic appearance of berries stained with soil.

Growing rules

The Jolie strawberry variety is grown in the same way as other varieties of Italian or French selection. For strawberries, it is important to choose a suitable place in the garden: the area should be well lit by the sun, not subject to strong winds or drafts, and contain soil with neutral acidity. It should also be remembered that the Jolie variety specifically does not like overly moist soil, so it is worth thinking about drainage of the area.

Planting strawberries

The time of planting young seedlings will determine how soon the strawberries will begin to bear fruit. If you plant Jolie in the spring, then this year it will not produce a normal harvest - you can only count on a couple of flower stalks from each bush.

In order for strawberries to actively bear fruit in the next season, it is necessary to plant them in the summer, and as early as possible. If you grow your own seedlings from rooted runners, the planting time is set for the end of August or the beginning of September. The most important thing is that the strawberries have time to form flower buds before winter - then next summer you will be able to harvest a full-fledged harvest.

Advice! Purchased seedlings in cassettes are planted even earlier - in July or, in extreme cases, in early August.

The area for planting strawberries is prepared in advance: humus or other fertilizers are scattered on the ground and the soil is dug to a depth of at least 25 cm. After this, when the ground settles, you can make holes for seedlings.

Considering the spreading nature of the Jolie bushes, it is recommended to plant seedlings with an interval of 25-30 cm between plants. In total, there should be no more than 4-5 strawberry bushes per square meter of land.

The seedlings are transferred into the holes together with a lump of earth, then lightly sprinkled with dry soil and compacted. The planting procedure is completed by watering and laying a mulch layer. It is recommended to use peat, sawdust or straw as mulch.

Important! Growing Jolie strawberries in tunnels or under film covers allows you to get earlier harvests.

How to care

Reviews about Jolie strawberries left by domestic gardeners allow us to develop a care plan for the temperate climate of Russia. It is very easy to care for Italian strawberries, because they are extremely unpretentious:

  1. Feed the bushes with mineral complexes during flowering and fruit formation - in mid-spring. Without sufficient nutrition or on poor soils, Jolie may suffer from a disease such as chlorosis. In the fall, it is allowed to use organic matter (humus, mullein, wood ash, bird droppings, etc.).
  2. The Jolie variety loves water, but excess moisture is dangerous for strawberries, so it is better to use drip irrigation systems. Per square meter of land you will need about ten liters of water.
  3. In autumn, strawberries are not mowed, but dry or infected leaves are simply removed to prevent the spread of infection.
  4. To prevent strawberry yields from falling, it is necessary to remove excess whiskers, since a lot of them are formed. For propagation, it is recommended to isolate the most productive uterine whiskers.
  5. Before frost, Jolie bushes must be covered with agrofibre or a layer of organic mulch. In early spring, the cover is removed to prevent flower buds from drying out.
Advice! To protect strawberries from insects, it is better to use Bordeaux mixture, and various fungicides are effective against fungal infections.

Review

Valentina Pavlovna
I saw strawberries of the Jolie variety on a neighbor’s plot, I liked the tall bushes with beautiful glossy berries. I purchased seedlings in cassettes - they are very easy to transplant to the site. Before planting, I fertilized the soil with humus, since our soil is poor. The strawberries began to bear fruit the following summer (I planted them last fall), although there were very few berries. But after another year, we managed to collect about 800 grams from each bush. For me, the advantages of the variety were its productivity, unpretentiousness to the composition of the soil and the attractive appearance of tasty berries. Among the minuses, I can note the dependence of the yield on the amount of fertilizing and the infection of bushes with rot in rainy summers. Despite everything, in three years Jolie multiplied her mustache by about 3-4 times.

Conclusion

Photos of Jolie's aligned, evenly colored strawberries look like pictures from a gardener's reference book. Aesthetic appearance is not the only advantage of the variety; farmers note the average yield of strawberries, its unpretentiousness and excellent taste.

Jolie is ideal for medium and small farms; it can be successfully grown in summer cottages and private garden plots.But for industrial scale today there are more productive varieties of foreign and domestic selection.
