Mospilan is an insecticide and pesticide created in 1989 in Japan by specialists from Nippon Soda Co., Ltd (Nippon Soda Co Limited). The drug, suitable for use on an “industrial scale” and on personal plots, was quickly appreciated by Russian gardeners due to its effectiveness, affordability, possibility of use simultaneously with other chemicals and long-lasting protective effect. However, despite the relative safety and low toxicity, the instructions for use of the Mospilan insecticide are required to be studied before using it.
Purpose
Mospilan is a broad-spectrum pesticide and insecticide.It can be used to treat agricultural and ornamental crops grown indoors and outdoors, as well as indoor plants. The drug helps get rid of most “omnivorous” pests (their eggs, larvae at different stages of development and adults):
- Colorado potato beetle;
- aphids;
- thrips;
- whiteflies;
- scale insects and shield beetles;
- leaf roller;
- sawflies;
- codling moth;
- mealybugs;
- weevils;
- secretive proboscis;
- mining moth;
- bread ground beetle;
- locusts;
- bedbugs;
- leech larvae.
The active ingredient of the drug Mospilan
The insecticide Mospilan contains acetamiprid at a concentration of 200 g per 1 kg. This substance is from the class of neonicotinoids, a more chemically stable synthetic analogue of acetylcholine. It differs from other substances of the same class, also used in the production of insecticides, by the rapid period of “decay” on the surface of plants.
Acetamiprid is not phytotoxic. The unabsorbed substance completely disintegrates within 3-4 days. When introduced into the vascular system of plants, it provides protection against pests for up to three weeks.
Principle of operation
The insecticide Mospilan penetrates the tissue of the plant when it comes into contact with it from the outside anywhere and quickly spreads through the vascular system to all its parts, including the roots. This is a drug with enteric contact action. It is destructive for pests both in direct contact with the solution and when feeding on the tissues and sap of the treated plant.
Acetamiprid is a nerve poison for insects. It “inhibits” the activity of their nervous system, preventing the transmission of nerve impulses, and “inhibits” the production of enzymes necessary for the normal course of all biological processes. The inevitable consequence is convulsions, spasms, the inability of the insect to move and its death within 24 hours.
Advantages and disadvantages
Reviews of the use of the insecticide Mospilan (sometimes marketed under the name Mospilan-Profi) highlight the following advantages of the drug:
- suitability for processing a wide variety of garden crops, regardless of growing conditions, and indoor flowers;
- combination of contact and intestinal principles of action;
- wide range of protection;
- relative safety for human health, domestic animals, and the environment in general;
- ensuring long-term protection of plantings;
- almost instantaneous (within an hour) onset of action and quick results (within 2-3 days);
- different release forms and package volumes;
- high penetration into plant tissue;
- economical consumption;
- absence of a pronounced odor in the working solution;
- weather resistance;
- inability of pests to develop immunity to the drug;
- Possibility of combination with other insecticides and pesticides.
There are also some disadvantages:
- impossibility of use in water protected areas;
- prohibition of use during flowering;
- a noticeable decrease in efficiency outside the temperature range of 15-29 ° C;
- unsuitability of the finished solution even for short-term storage.
Instructions for use of the drug Mospilan
Instructions for use of the drug Mospilan (or Mospilan-Profi) include the following general recommendations:
- use water at room temperature (20-25 °C);
- pour the powder into a container filled with water in small portions, stirring constantly;
- use the prepared solution as soon as possible;
- spray only the front side of the leaf blades, without trying to treat the entire plant;
- carry out treatment in dry weather, waiting for the dew to dry;
Mospilan from the Colorado potato beetle
The working solution of the Mospilan insecticide against the Colorado potato beetle is 5-8 g of powder per 10 liters of water. The approximate consumption of the working solution is 5 liters per hundred square meters.
Mospilan for whitefly
The insecticide Mospilan against whiteflies is used mainly for treating plantings in greenhouses and indoor flowers. To destroy the pest and prevent its attacks, 1 g of the drug is diluted in 2 liters of water.
Mospilan for thrips
To combat thrips, a “standard” solution of the Mospilan insecticide is suitable; this is the concentration recommended on the packaging. A sachet (2.5 g) of powder is diluted in a liter of water, after which the liquid is poured into a bucket (10 l) of clean water.
Mospilan against ticks
Mospilan is an insecticide, not an acaricide. However, there are some reviews from gardeners about positive experiences in controlling spider mites using the insecticide Mospilan on garden and indoor plants. To do this, 5 g of the drug is diluted in a liter of water and poured into a large container, bringing the total volume to 10-12 liters.
Mospilan for mealybug
To combat mealybugs and scale insects, the most concentrated solution of the drug Mospilan is used. Powder (15 g) is poured into a liter of water and mixed thoroughly. The liquid is poured into clean water, obtaining 10 liters of working solution.
Consumption rate per 10 liters for specific plants
On average, 10 liters of working solution of Mospilan insecticide is enough to treat 200-250 m² of bed area. The consumption of the drug for such a volume of water is determined by the type of pest that has to be combated. Therefore, we can only talk about approximate standards.
Culture | Consumption of Mospilan insecticide per 10 l |
Cereals | Up to 15 g |
Cucumbers, tomatoes | Up to 20 g |
Potato | 5-12.5 g |
Beet | 5-7.5 g |
Sunflower | 5-7.5 g |
Apple trees and other fruit trees | 20-40 g |
Houseplants | 2.5-5 g |
Compatibility with other tools
Mospilan can be used in a common solution with the vast majority of pesticides and insecticides. The exceptions are drugs:
- giving a highly alkaline reaction;
- containing sulfur.
Preliminary “test” mixing of drugs planned for simultaneous use in small volumes is mandatory. The resulting flocculent precipitate indicates their incompatibility. If the result is a homogeneous solution that retains its original color and does not emit a pronounced “chemical” odor, it is suitable for use.
Safety precautions
The insecticide Mospilan is classified as hazard class III. This means that the drug is recognized as moderately dangerous for humans, any warm-blooded animals, birds, fish, and beneficial entomofauna (bees, bumblebees, earthworms).
However, the use of personal protective equipment for the respiratory and visual organs (glasses, respirators) cannot be neglected.The beds are sprayed wearing rubber gloves, and closed clothing made of thick fabric and shoes are worn to minimize the risk of the working solution getting on the skin.
General rules for safe work with Mospilan insecticide:
- do not eat, drink, or smoke while spraying plantings;
- cultivate the beds for a maximum of four hours at a time;
- prepare a working solution in a plastic or glass container;
- Avoid spraying in the immediate vicinity of apiaries and open water bodies, and remove domestic animals from the area in advance.
After finishing treating the plantings with the Mospilan insecticide, you need to wash your face and hands with soap as quickly as possible. It is also advisable to rinse your mouth with a weak solution of baking soda or potassium permanganate.
If the Mospilan insecticide gets on the skin or mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, or mouth, you need to wash it off with cool running water without rubbing it. If accidentally swallowed, induce vomiting.
If you experience symptoms indicating an allergic reaction or a general deterioration in your health, you should consult a doctor. There is no specific “antidote” to combat the consequences of poisoning with this drug; medications are selected based on “individual” symptoms.
Analogues of Mospilan
There are quite a lot of preparations with the same active ingredient as the Mospilan insecticide.The main differences between them are the content of the active ingredient, the form and volume of release, and the toxicity class.
Grinda
Fast-acting systemic insecticide. Penetrates into all plant tissues and does not affect the taste of the fruit. Effective against all “universal” pests that are well known to Russian gardeners and affect most crops.
Agent
One of the newest insecticides that provides plants with protection from many pests for three weeks. Helps get rid of insects at different stages of development, “settled” on the front side and back of the leaf plate, stems, in the root region and soil.
Dexter
Contains not only acetamiprid, but also lambda-cyhalothrin. There are no other insecticides with such active ingredients. The composition ensures effectiveness against any pests of agricultural and ornamental garden crops. Available in the form of a ready-to-use solution.
Storage and shelf life of the drug Mospilan
In unopened packaging, Mospilan insecticide can be stored for a maximum of five years at temperatures ranging from -15 °C to 30 °C in a place with normal air humidity. It is kept separate from food products, medications, household chemicals, and out of the reach of small children and pets.
Conclusion
Instructions for using Mospilan are quite simple. The requirements and recommendations set out in it should in no case be ignored, otherwise the health of the gardener, the crops he grows, and the environment as a whole may suffer. The drug, if used correctly, has proven itself to be a highly effective insecticide and a broad-spectrum pesticide that provides relatively long-term protection to crops.
