Tomatoes Russian Domes: variety description, photos, reviews

The Russian Domes tomato is one of the relatively new varieties. The originator claims that it is undemanding in care, consistently high yields and excellent quality of fruits. The experience of gardeners who grew the hybrid generally confirms this information. The new product looks quite promising and suitable for beginner gardeners.

History of appearance

The domestic tomato hybrid Russian Domes F1 is an achievement of the team of breeders of the Tsvetushchy Sad agricultural company. It appeared on sale quite recently (in 2017), so it is not yet listed in the State Register of Breeding Achievements. It is also unknown whether the originating agricultural company submitted the corresponding application.

Important! There is a variety of tomatoes with a very similar name - “Domes of Russia”. However, despite the “consonance”, these are not the same thing.

Description of the tomato variety Russian Domes F1

Russian domes F1 is a determinate hybrid of tomatoes. This property means that the height of the bush is “programmed” in advance by breeders; plants cannot stretch more than 50-60 cm.

The bushes are quite powerful, “squat”, densely leafy

The fruits are a classic bright red color for a vegetable. The name of the hybrid is due to the original shape of the tomatoes - they are round, noticeably flattened, with a small but clearly visible sharp “nose”. The skin is glossy, quite dense and elastic, which provides the crop with good shelf life and transportability.

The seed chambers of Russian dome tomatoes are small, there are few seeds in them, they are very small

The tomatoes are one-dimensional (weighing approximately 200 g). According to this indicator, the hybrid is noticeably different for the better from other determinate varieties. The pulp of tomatoes is dense, not particularly juicy, and “grainy” when cut.

The taste is very good - rich, balanced. It has a distinct sweetness and light refreshing sourness. Tomatoes also have a distinct aroma.

Important! The originator of the Russian Domes tomato is positioned as a hybrid for open ground. But, in principle, it can be grown in a greenhouse. And in the northern regions, “protected” plantings are the only option for obtaining a harvest.

Characteristics of tomato Russian Domes

In the characteristics and description of the hybrid, one immediately notices the seemingly obvious “discrepancy” between the compactness and short stature of the bushes and the declared yield. However, reviews from gardeners who have had time to get acquainted with the hybrid confirm the information of the originator.

Ripening period and yield

Russian domes are a medium-early ripening tomato. From the moment the seed sprouts until harvest, 95-105 days pass. The specific period varies depending on the climate in the growing region and weather conditions in each season.

In the description of the originator, the yield immediately attracts attention. According to the agricultural company, it is 13-15 kg/m² in open ground and up to 17 kg/m² in greenhouses. This became possible thanks to the carpal type of fruiting and frequent “laying” of bunches. The first one is formed already above the 6-7th sheet, the next ones - at an “interval” of three sheets.

Each cluster of Russian Dome tomatoes contains 4-6 fruits

Resistance to diseases and pests

The immunity of Russian Dome tomatoes is not too high. Plants are prone to infection by any of the pathogens typical for the crop if weather conditions favor the activation of the pathogen.

Pests to the hybrid Russian Domes, according to the description of the originator and reviews from gardeners, do not show much interest. Although the experience of growing these tomatoes is not yet rich enough to say for sure.

How to use

The purpose of tomatoes is universal. They are suitable for fresh consumption and for preparing any first and second courses. For whole-fruit canning, this is not the best option due to the rather large size of the fruit, although Russian Dome tomatoes look presentable even after heat treatment - the skin rarely cracks, the richness of the color and the density of the pulp are preserved. These tomatoes are quite suitable for homemade sauces, ketchups, adjika, lecho.

Advantages and disadvantages

To breed the Russian Domes tomato, several specially created “parent” varieties were used. Therefore, it is not very typical for determinate hybrids, differing for the better in yield and large-fruitedness.

After harvesting, Russian Dome tomatoes can be stored without loss of quality for two months

Pros:

  • comparative low maintenance requirements;
  • possibility of planting in open ground and in a greenhouse;
  • compactness of bushes;
  • consistently high productivity;
  • original appearance, one-dimensionality, fairly large fruit size;
  • pleasant balanced taste, pronounced aroma;
  • keeping quality and transportability are above average for the crop;
  • versatility of tomatoes.

Minuses:

  • susceptibility to any pathogenic fungi typical of tomatoes;
  • impossibility of propagation using seeds collected from independently grown fruits.

Features of agricultural technology

Despite the early ripening period, the hybrid is grown in seedlings. It is recommended to treat seeds with biostimulants and fungicides to improve germination and prevent fungal diseases. The easiest way is to immediately plant them in individual containers, avoiding picking in the future.

Seedlings are ready for planting in the ground at the age of 50-55 days. The seedlings grow to 12-15 cm in height and have 3-4 true leaves. It is impossible to indicate specific dates for planting them in open ground and greenhouses. The time is determined based on the local climate and weather in the current season. In central Russia, you can focus on the first ten days of May.

12-15 days before planting, it is recommended to begin hardening of tomato seedlings Russian Domes

Important! Containers and soil for planting tomato seeds Russian domes must be disinfected in any way. This is another measure to prevent infection by pathogenic microflora.

The compactness of the bushes allows plantings to be compacted to 6-8 plants per 1 m². The minimum interval between them is 35-40 cm with a row spacing of 55-60 cm.

Seedlings are planted in holes about 15 cm deep.A handful of humus and a tablespoon of sifted wood ash are thrown to the bottom. It can be replaced with complex fertilizers for tomatoes.

Tomato seedlings Russian Domes are buried in the soil up to the lower cotyledon leaves and watered abundantly before and after planting.

Caring for Russian Domes tomatoes includes:

  1. Watering. Intervals vary depending on cultivation in open ground or in a greenhouse, frequency and intensity of precipitation, and air temperature. On average, bushes are watered once every 2-5 days, spending 4-5 liters of water per bush. In extreme heat, daily watering may be required.
  2. Loosening and weeding. You can refuse them by filling the bed with mulch immediately after planting. Otherwise, you will have to loosen and weed the Russian Dome tomatoes once every 10-15 days.
  3. Feeding. Complex store-bought fertilizers are recommended - compact bushes are severely depleted due to the large size of the fruits and high yields, folk remedies cannot fully compensate for the resulting deficiency of nutrients.
  4. Bush formation. It is recommended to grow plants in two or three stems, leaving, in addition to the central shoot, 1-2 more stepsons below the first fruit cluster.

Forming a tomato bush Russian domes includes regular removal of “extra” stepsons - they should not be allowed to grow longer than 2-3 cm

Important! Despite the small height of the bushes, they may require support or tying. This is necessary so that the fruits of the Russian Dome tomatoes do not touch the ground, where they can become infected with fungi.

Pest and disease control

One of the main disadvantages of the Russian Domes tomato is its low resistance to pathogenic microflora. Simple preventive measures will help you avoid the development of diseases:

  • taking into account crop rotation rules;
  • compliance with the disembarkation scheme;
  • providing access to fresh air plantings;
  • avoiding waterlogging and drying out of the substrate;
  • regular inspection of plantings.

Also, as part of the prevention of fungal diseases, it is recommended to pre-treat Russian Domes tomato seeds in a solution of any fungicide or potassium permanganate (pale pink). They are also used to treat plants and soil after planting in open ground or in a greenhouse. The first spraying is carried out 12-15 days after transferring the seedlings to the garden bed, then they are repeated throughout the season with an interval of 2-3 weeks.

Any copper-containing preparations effectively destroy pathogenic microflora

Important! If there is less than a month left before the Russian Dome tomato harvest, only biofungicides or folk antifungal agents are used to treat the plantings in the open ground and in the greenhouse.

Conclusion

The Russian Dome tomato owes its name to the original shape of the fruit. In addition to its recognizable appearance, the hybrid has very good taste and high yield. However, it must be borne in mind that you can lose the entire harvest if you do not regularly pay attention to the prevention of fungal diseases.

Reviews from gardeners about the Russian Domes tomato

Svetlana Nelyubina, Lipetsk
Last year my neighbor in the country treated me to tomatoes of the Russian Domes variety. I really liked both the original shape and the taste of the fruit. This year I planted them at home. It took a minimum of time and effort to care for the bushes, and the harvest definitely pleased me with both volume and quality.
Matvey Rozhkov, Krasnodar
I have been planting Russian Dome tomatoes for two years in a row (in open ground).When choosing a variety, I was captivated by the combination of small-sized bushes with high yield and large fruit size. We eat tomatoes mostly fresh; they are too big for canning.
Alena Opletina, Perm
Russian domes are tomatoes with a very rich taste. There is both a noticeable sweetness and a pronounced aroma. They are good in slices and fresh vegetable salads. Caring for the plantings is not difficult - with my minimal gardening experience, I reaped a very decent harvest.
