One of the popular tomato varieties in Russia is the Pink Souvenir tomato, specially bred by breeders for the harsh Russian climate. It is intensively grown by summer residents in open beds and greenhouses.
Who brought it out and when?
Tomato Pink Souvenir was developed by Russian breeders. The originator of the tomato variety is the agricultural enterprise JSC Sortsemovoshch.
The Pink Souvenir tomato was registered in the State Register of the Russian Federation in 2004 and is approved for cultivation by both agricultural enterprises and private gardeners.
Description and characteristics of the tomato variety Pink Souvenir
Bushes of the determinate variety Pink Souvenir grow in height to a maximum of 60 cm. The leaves of the tomato are medium in size, have a regular shape and a light green color.
The first fruit cluster is formed above the 6-7th leaf of the crop, each subsequent one - after 1-2 leaves. Each fruit cluster of the Pink Souvenir bush produces 5-7 tomatoes weighing 80-120 grams.
The fruits of this tomato variety have a slightly flattened spherical shape.
Ripening time
The Pink Souvenir tomato is characterized by an ultra-early ripening period. The first ripe tomatoes of this variety can already be harvested after 78-80 days, i.e. at the very beginning of summer.
Tomato productivity Pink souvenir
Pink souvenir tomatoes reach a weight of 80-120 grams; individual fruits can be larger and heavier.
With proper cultivation of these tomatoes, taking into account the type of soil and climatic characteristics of the region, up to 8 kg can be harvested from 1 m2 of bed.
Resistance to adverse factors
The culture tolerates temperature changes well.
In regions with cold, rainy summers, there is a risk of tomato bushes being damaged by fungal plant diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out preventive measures to prevent diseases in a timely manner. It is also recommended to treat tomatoes against pests.
Growing regions
Pink souvenir tomatoes can be grown in all climatic regions. In areas with cold and short summers, it is recommended to cultivate the variety in a greenhouse.
Purpose and application
Pink Souvenir tomatoes are quite juicy, have dense flesh, and excellent taste. Small fruits are perfect for canning for the winter.They can be consumed fresh, in salads, made into juices, tomato paste, ketchup, and used for preparing hot dishes.
Advantages and disadvantages
The Pink Souvenir tomato is an excellent choice for growing in Russian regions with a harsh climate. The vegetable crop bears fruit well, the fruits have excellent taste qualities inherent in tomatoes.
Pros:
- possibility of cultivation in all Russian regions;
- standard rules for planting seeds and seedlings;
- resistance to temperature changes;
- high productivity;
- excellent taste;
- versatility of application;
- marketable condition;
- resistance to transportation;
- good keeping quality.
Minuses:
- Garter required;
- stepsoning is necessary.
Landing dates and rules
Pink Souvenir tomato seeds are planted at the end of March, but no later than the beginning of April. They can be sown at home in flowerpots, special containers for seedlings, or directly in open ground in a garden bed under plastic film.
To grow seedlings, soil is taken from the permanent place where the crop grows and inorganic and organic fertilizers are added to it. Before planting, it is recommended to soak seed material in a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
After the first shoots emerge from the ground, the temperature in the room is maintained no higher than +20ºС, and the soil is periodically irrigated. At this stage, the plant requires high humidity.
After the first two leaves appear, the sprouts are planted in individual containers, i.e. perform picking of tomato crops.This is necessary for the proper development of the root system.
In order for Pink Souvenir tomato seedlings to quickly adapt to the climatic conditions at their permanent place of growth, before directly planting them in open ground, they need to be taken out into the fresh air for at least a few hours every day and the frequency of watering reduced.
The plant can be planted under film cover 1.5-2 weeks earlier.
The sprouts are placed in holes up to 20 cm deep in increments of 35-45 cm. A good seedling has 7-8 leaves and a main stem 0.9-1 cm thick.
Features of care
To achieve maximum yield, the crop must be thoroughly watered, at the same time loosen the soil and promptly apply the necessary fertilizers to it.
Rules for irrigation of tomato crops:
- The first watering of the plant after transplanting the seedlings to a permanent place of growth is carried out after about one week. During this period, the root system of the bush will grow and strengthen in the soil.
- For the next two weeks, the plant needs to be watered periodically so that the soil is constantly moist and does not dry out completely.
- Next, the bushes are watered once a week so that fruits set normally. At this stage, it is not recommended to water frequently, as the green mass will grow rapidly, and the risk of the plant being damaged by harmful microorganisms will also increase.
The intensity of watering tomato bushes also depends on the climatic region. If it rains once a week, then you don’t have to water the crop at all.
Disease and pest control
Like other tomato varieties, the Pink Souvenir tomato requires preventive measures against diseases and pests.
The most common diseases of tomato crops and options for combating them:
- Late blight is a fungal pathology that affects the fruits of tomato crops. Also, characteristic spots of the disease appear on the lower green leaves of the plant. Bushes are treated with a copper-containing solution against late blight.
- White rot is characteristic of ripe tomatoes. During storage, a white coating appears on them. The source of the disease is contaminated soil. To prevent this disease, plants are treated with Fitosporin.
In such a situation, you need to remove all the weeds around the bushes, carefully dig up the soil and treat the green mass with Fitoverm.
Conclusion
The Pink Souvenir tomato is a universal breeding variety bred by domestic breeders specifically for cultivation in the harsh climatic conditions of Russia. The plant is characterized by increased resistance to significant temperature changes and tolerates sudden cold snaps and heat when the air temperature rises above +30ºС. The crop is characterized by high productivity. The fruits tolerate transportation well, last a long time, and are suitable for fresh consumption and canning.
