Winter garlic Podmoskovny: variety description, photos, reviews

Podmoskovny garlic is one of the popular winter varieties. It is successfully cultivated by gardeners not only in central Russia, but also in more severe climatic conditions. The cold resistance and hardiness of Podmoskovny garlic is very good, but you won’t be able to reap a good harvest if you don’t ask in advance about the important nuances of autumn planting and spring care.

History of appearance

Garlic Podmoskovny is a variety of Russian selection. The originator is NPF Russian Seeds CJSC; planting material is produced under license by Intersemya LLC and Agrofirm Poisk LLC. Authors: M. S. Vinogradov and M. Saryev.

The variety appeared in the late 90s; an application for official registration was submitted in 2000. All the necessary procedures and variety testing took relatively little time; since 2002, Podmoskovny garlic has been listed in the domestic State Register of Breeding Achievements.

Description of the Podmoskovny garlic variety

Moscow region garlic is grown mainly by amateur gardeners, although the State Register notes that it is also suitable for small farms.A variety from the shooting category.

The rosette of leaves is not too high (35-40 cm). Leaf blades 1-2 cm wide, of a typical color for the crop, covered with a dense layer of bluish waxy coating. The flower arrow extends to approximately 80 cm in height and bends slightly.

The rosette of leaves does not fall apart, is quite compact

The heads are not particularly large, flat-rounded. They are one-dimensional, weighing about 60 g. The surface dry scales are whitish, with dull brownish-violet streaks. The inner ones are beige, with an inky purple undertone. The pulp is light cream, almost white, very dense and juicy.

Podmoskovny garlic heads consist of 5-7 cloves weighing 9-12 g

Taste qualities

The taste of Podmoskovny garlic is officially described as spicy. It is characterized by a pronounced aroma and a long, burning aftertaste. In the eyes of some gardeners, this is an undoubted advantage of the variety, while others, on the contrary, consider taste qualities to be its disadvantage.

Important! The characteristic pungency of Podmoskovny garlic is also inherent in the green mass (leaves, shoots). They are often used for home preparations for the winter, and can also be preserved separately.

Ripening and yield

In terms of ripening time, Podmoskovny garlic is mid-season. It takes 95-110 days from the moment mass shoots appear in the spring to yellowing and lodging of the leaves. This fairly large scatter is due to the climatic characteristics of different growing regions.

The yield is stable, it practically does not depend on how lucky the gardener is with the weather in spring and summer. If you provide the plantings with minimal care, you can count on 1.6-1.9 kg/m².

The harvest can be stored for up to six months. Then the cloves wrinkle, dry out, and the characteristic pungency of taste disappears.During the specified shelf life, it practically does not deteriorate - the percentage of commercially available heads is reduced to no more than 90%.

The variety cannot be called high-yielding, but many gardeners claim that this is quite enough for them

Disease resistance

Podmoskovny garlic can generally be called hardy and stress-resistant. This characteristic also includes good immunity. It is extremely rarely affected by diseases and pests that are dangerous to the crop, of which there are few.

Due to its pungent odor and pungent taste, it is inedible for most insects. And the phytoncides secreted by Podmoskovny garlic successfully destroy many types of pathogenic fungi in the soil and in the air.

Growing regions

Garlic Podmoskovny is often positioned as a variety for the middle zone. However, the State Register lists as suitable for planting all Russian regions in which farming is, in principle, possible, including the most problematic areas for gardeners - the Urals, Siberia, the Far East, the North and the North-West.

The variety did not become particularly popular in the former Soviet republics. This is probably due to its lack of outstanding characteristics, with the exception of the pungency of taste.

Advantages and disadvantages

On each arrow of Podmoskovny garlic, small aerial bulbs ripen. They can be used for planting the next season, obtaining one-toothed trees and saving on planting material.

From Podmoskovny garlic shoots you can prepare a vitamin paste that is extremely beneficial for the immune system.

Pros:

  • cold resistance sufficient for wintering even in Russian regions with the most severe climate;
  • the presence of good immunity against fungal diseases, rare cases of infection by pests dangerous to the crop;
  • ease of care, undemanding to growing conditions;
  • fairly good shelf life and transportability;
  • versatility of purpose;
  • juicy and dense pulp;
  • distinctly pungent taste, rich aroma.

Minuses:

  • not particularly large head size;
  • limited shelf life of the crop;
  • unsuitable for planting in spring.

Landing rules

The most important thing when planting winter garlic Podmoskovny is the right time. If you rush too much, the cloves, deceived by the autumn warmth, will begin to form leaves. Such young greenery is guaranteed not to survive the winter, nor will the bulbs themselves, weakened by forcing them.

When a gardener delays planting too much, the cloves do not have time to adapt to the new habitat or grow the root system. In this state, they freeze out when the temperature drops to just -10 °C.

It is impossible to accurately determine the timing of planting Podmoskovny garlic. Each region has its own, and they also change from season to season. They are influenced not only by local climatic conditions, but also by long-term weather forecasts.

About an hour before planting Podmoskovny garlic, the soil should be well watered

Important! Podmoskovny garlic takes 3.5-4 weeks to take root. Accordingly, it is planted about a month before the first frost.

The preparation of the bed follows a standard algorithm: it is dug up, humus or rotted compost (3-5 l/m²) and complex fertilizer containing basic macroelements (nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus) are added. You can also use specialized fertilizers for garlic. The dosage of the fertilizer is determined in the instructions for it.

Planting scheme for Podmoskovny garlic - 10-12 cm between holes with a row spacing of about 25 cm. Planting depth - 6-8 cm.

12-15 days after planting Podmoskovny garlic, the bed is mulched, covered with a layer of humus, peat chips, pine needles, sawdust 2-4 cm thick

Care instructions

Caring for winter garlic Podmoskovny is essentially limited to watering and fertilizing. In the absence of precipitation, the soil in the garden must be moistened every 5-7 days.

After each watering or at least 2-3 times a month, the soil is carefully loosened

Approximately two weeks after emergence and another 12-15 days, nitrogen root fertilizing is carried out. Podmoskovny garlic reacts positively to both mineral fertilizers (urea, ammonium sulfate) and natural organic matter (infusion of cow manure, bird droppings, weeds).

Nitrogen in the early stages of development is necessary for the active growth of green mass

Then they switch to complex preparations, preferably specialized ones, for onions and garlic. They are applied 2-3 times, with the same frequency. Root feeding is stopped when the leaves begin to turn yellow and fall on the bed, 10-15 days before harvesting.

Specialized fertilizers contain not only the main macroelements, but also microelements in the proportions required by garlic

Weeding the beds with Podmoskovny garlic cannot be neglected. Its root system is shallow; it may not be able to withstand competition for water and nutrients with weeds.

Important! The approximate harvest time for Podmoskovny garlic is the end of June or the first ten days of July. To do this, be sure to choose a dry day, and dig up the heads so as not to damage the roots.

Roots and leaves can be cut only after drying

Conclusion

Winter garlic Podmoskovny is valued by Russian amateur gardeners for its cold resistance, stable and very good yield, simplicity of agricultural technology and vigorous taste. The most important point when growing it is to guess the timing of planting and carry it out correctly so that the cloves successfully survive the winter.

Reviews from gardeners about Podmoskovny garlic

Vitaly Alexandrov, Samara
I was looking for truly killer garlic for a long time until they recommended the Podmoskovny variety. The taste is exactly what I wanted: very hot and rich. In terms of care, the crop is completely problem-free - basic agrotechnical measures are enough to reap a very good harvest.
Irina Sorokina, Kirov
Podmoskovny garlic in the beds pleases every season. Of all our varieties, this is the most stable in terms of yield and quality of heads. They are always strong, dense, and quite large. Podmoskovny garlic is stored until about mid-winter, maintaining its juiciness and richness of taste.
Maria Yakovleva, Yaroslavl

I’ve been planting Podmoskovny garlic for five years now, and I don’t plan to give it up. The variety suits all parameters: unpretentious, frost-resistant, productive, very spicy. There is not even any waste left - we eat the cloves or add them to preparations for the winter, pickle the arrows, and the husks are used in tinctures to protect indoor flowers from pests.
