Storing garlic in braids

Gardeners have been weaving garlic braids for a very long time. Beginners often face a number of problems. They don’t know how to knit a vegetable correctly and where to store it. There are many ways to braid garlic, some of which are quite simple and affordable.

Advantages and disadvantages of the method

Storing food using this method has its own unique characteristics. The ratio of pros and cons is the same, but this does not prevent summer residents from continuing to use braided braids.

There are more than 20 ways to weave garlic

The advantages include:

  • garlic is always at hand, which is convenient when you need to use a head;
  • the vegetable is a measure to prevent the spread of diseases;
  • the heads are in the air, so they do not rot from contact with other environments;
  • braids fit harmoniously into the design of private houses;
  • Regardless of the method chosen, garlic will not take up space in the kitchen.

Flaws:

  • the smell is noticeable - when you plan to invite guests, it is better to remove the garlic for a while and ventilate the room;
  • if there is high humidity in the room, the vegetable may begin to rot;
  • with regular contact with the sun, sprouts appear;
  • During storage, the garlic will peel off and you will have to clean the kitchen more often;
  • if one bulb begins to rot, it will become a threat to the others, in addition, insects will constantly fly near the spit.

Before you start braiding garlic, you should familiarize yourself with both the positive and negative sides of the process. If the conditions are suitable, then it’s time to start collecting the bulbs.

Collecting and preparing garlic for weaving

Collection conditions are the same for spring and winter vegetables. Usually the harvest is harvested towards the end of the growing season. The modified shoots (i.e., the bulbs themselves) are dug up, cleaned of soil and dried well. Some people lay them out on a towel or sheets and place them in partial shade.

If there is a lot of garlic and there is nowhere to hang it, you can lay the braided braids on a mesh

Advice! Another method is more often practiced - the vegetable (along with the root) is collected in bunches, fastened with a rope and hung with the bulbs down. This way the garlic loses moisture faster and is easier to weave.

For proper drying, at least four days are required. However, when it is necessary to keep the tops healthy, another week is added to this time. After this, the bundles are removed and the roots are removed. If greenery is necessary, it is cut off, leaving about 28-32 cm. The main thing is that it is whole, only after that they begin to weave.

How to braid garlic for storage

Storing garlic in braids has been practiced for a long time. Over the years, a large number of decorative features have been invented and woven in different ways. It was believed that the larger and more beautiful the bunches, the more responsible the owner.

It's easy to braid garlic into a simple braid. It is enough to prepare a rope, tourniquet, twine and follow the instructions.

With twine

To create a beautiful braid that will fit into the interior, you need to select bulbs that are approximately the same size. Also, thanks to this, the material will not break and fall off.

The braid is woven as follows:

  1. You need to select twine measuring about 1.5 m and fold it in half.
  2. Place the first garlic at the junction and tie it inside - one end comes out from the onion and two ends from the twine, 3 pieces in total.
  3. Subsequent garlic are added to the first one until the tackle is full.

After this, the ends are tied into a knot and a ring is woven, by which the product is suspended from the ceiling.

With rope

Garlic is woven using a rope, two heads in a row. That’s why the method is called “with a rope.” The braid comes out more voluminous, and more bulbs fit on it. The weaving process is quite fast.

Instructions with photos on how to weave garlic into a braid step by step:

  1. Select a small rope, for example, for a balcony, measuring 1.5 m, and fold it in half.
  2. One end is formed from the garlic and two ends from the selected tackle - three in total, the braiding is done in the same way as a simple braid on the hair.
  3. To increase strength, tie a knot every ten bulbs.

The ends of the rope are fastened together, and then a ring is woven to hang it.

With tourniquet

Garlic can also be braided using a rope. To do this, select shoots with small (up to 14 cm) tops. It is advisable to keep the stems moist. This will increase adhesion to the tackle. Weaving is done according to the following formula:

  1. Select a rope measuring about 1.5 m, fold it in half, tie the ends together and form a bun.
  2. Tops are woven into the formed bundle;
  3. The greens are woven to the tackle one by one, in a zigzag motion, until the stems fill the entire strand.

After this, a knot is formed, resulting in a full-fledged braid.

Along with onions

Select heads that are identical in size. Any of the above materials – twine, rope or tourniquet – will be suitable as tackle. Braids are woven according to general instructions, sometimes adding other crops, such as onions, to the design.

Common mistakes

Despite the fact that braiding is quite simple, beginners often make mistakes. This can ruin not only the decorative appearance, but also call into question the entire storage technology. The most common mistakes include:

  1. The heads are located far from each other. When the husks dry out and fall off, the garlic will fall out of the braid.
  2. If you use too short a tackle, such a design will look inappropriate from the outside.
  3. When weaving, dry tops are used. This may cause a fracture.
Attention! Before you start weaving, it is better to practice on an unnecessary rope. This will be the best error prevention measure.

Terms and conditions for storing braids

In order for the braid to stand for several months without consequences, it is necessary to create the following conditions for its storage:

  • the structure is suspended rather than folded on the surface;
  • garlic is placed away from drafts;
  • if damaged samples are detected, they are promptly removed;
  • the room is ventilated.

If there are no materials for weaving, you can use another method. Garlic and herbs are tied into bundles of 6 pieces, placed in a stocking and placed in the refrigerator, box or bag. Vegetables can be stored for a long time on the balcony. It’s convenient that you don’t need to weave any braids for this.

Conclusion

Braiding garlic in a braid is a simple task. This will require a small rope and a little patience.If you follow the instructions, the vegetable can be stored without taking up space. In country houses this method is often practiced. With a high-quality braid, the room becomes more comfortable.
