Garlic: spring care, feeding

Almost all gardeners grow garlic. Those who have been farming for many years know very well that feeding garlic in the spring is a mandatory procedure. Without it it is difficult to grow a good harvest. Feeding a spicy vegetable is not so difficult, the main thing is proper care and selection of the right fertilizer.

After feeding, the plant gains strength, grows not only greenery, but also a large head with many vigorous, aromatic cloves. Therefore, you should not forget, let alone neglect, the spring feeding of the spicy crop. Our article is intended for beginner vegetable growers, but we think it will be interesting for “oldies” too.

Types of garlic

Garlic can be planted before winter or in early spring, as soon as the soil is ripe. The method of planting also affects the name of the species - winter and spring.

Cloves planted in the fall germinate very early, producing green feathers. Spring garlic is just being planted at this time. Naturally, the ripening of these types of spicy vegetables occurs almost a month apart.

First feeding of garlic, regardless of winter or spring, occurs in early spring. Vegetables receive their first dose of microelements and nutrients from a well-fertilized garden bed.

Attention! The growth of green mass removes some of the fertilizer, so the garlic needs to be fed.

Spring fertilizer of garlic, like all previous ones, is combined with regular watering.

Both types of spicy vegetables are fertilized three times in the spring. The first spring feeding of winter garlic is carried out immediately after the snow melts, and spring garlic after 3-4 feathers appear. Second time after 14 days. The third time is in June, when the heads are formed.

What to feed

The question of what fertilizer to feed garlic in the spring often arises among gardeners, especially beginners. It should be noted that in the spring you need to fertilize the garlic bed well with humus or compost, and add wood ash to the soil. If gardeners do not neglect mineral fertilizers, then ammonium nitrate (20-25 g) is applied to each square meter to stimulate the growth of green mass.

When carrying out the first spring feeding a solution of urea (carbamide) is used. One tablespoon is enough for a ten-liter container. Urea is poured onto each square, 3 liters.

Second time in the spring garlic is fed with nitrophoska or nitroammophoska. When preparing the solution, you will need two large spoons for 10 liters of clean water. Garlic beds need 4 liters of this nutrient solution per square. This is useful fertilizer for garlic feeds plants with phosphorus.

Feeding garlic beds in early spring with mineral fertilizers does not end there. The third time superphosphate is used. The working solution is prepared from two tablespoons of fertilizer per ten-liter watering can. This portion of the solution is enough for two square meters of garlic bed.

Feeding by leaves

Fertilizing garlic and onions in spring and summer is carried out not only at the roots, but also at the leaves. In other words, foliar plant nutrition is one of the principles of proper care. Vegetable feathers are able to receive microelements through the green mass. You can use any mineral or organic fertilizers, only the solution needs a lower concentration.

Spray the spicy vegetable in the evening or early in the morning, before the sun rises. Foliar feeding is carried out twice during the growing season. But in order to get a rich harvest of garlic, so that a large number of cloves form in the heads, you do not need to give up root feeding.

Feathers have turned yellow, what to do?

Vegetable growers who are starting to grow garlic for the first time have a question about why the leaves turn yellow, despite care, and how to deal with the problem. To return plants to their previous appearance, you must first find out what is causing it. Most often, the leaves may turn yellow due to a violation of the technology of growing the vegetable, an attack by pests, or you simply forgot to feed the garlic in the spring.

If you do not feed the plants in a timely manner, you can use root or foliar feeding of garlic to eliminate yellowed feathers. To water under the roots, add 1 tablespoon of fertilizer to a bucket of water.

Attention! For spraying garlic, the solution concentrate is half as much.

Saline solution

Watering plants with a saline solution saturates the soil with sodium and chlorine. Add 3 tablespoons to 10 liters of water. Up to three liters of solution are poured onto one square. Salt is not only a fertilizer for garlic in the spring, but also helps get rid of onion flies, aphids, and secretive proboscis. A salt solution is also used in case of yellowing and drying of feathers.

Folk remedies

Many vegetable growers use popularly proven means to feed garlic: wood ash, ammonia, yeast nutrient mixtures.

Wood ash

Previously, our grandmothers used ash for almost all garden crops. When planting garlic, it was added in dry form before digging the earth and sprinkled under the plants. Ash solutions were also widely used for fertilizing: 100 grams of ash were added to a ten-liter bucket, mixed thoroughly and poured into the furrows between plantings. Then they covered it with soil.

Important! The ash contains a large amount of microelements necessary for the growth of a large head of garlic.

Ammonia

Garlic plantings are treated with ammonia not only as a fertilizer, but also as protection against pests. It contains ammonia with a pungent odor. It repels pests primarily the onion fly and the secretive proboscis. And plants receive the necessary nitrogen. It is easily absorbed by plants, but does not accumulate in them. Therefore the solution ammonia You can safely add it to the garlic or spray it on it. Add 3 tablespoons of solution to a bucket of water. Such procedures can be carried out several times per season.

Chicken droppings

When feathers turn yellow or growth stops, they often use Chicken droppings. It contains a large number of elements useful to plants:

  • cobalt;
  • boron;
  • zinc;
  • sulfur;

Chicken manure will improve the structure of the soil, and beneficial bacteria will develop better in it. And this, in turn, will have a positive effect on productivity. Additionally, watering your garlic beds with chicken manure in early spring will help the plants cope with temperature changes.

One part of the litter is poured with 15 parts of water and left to ferment.To prevent the unpleasant smell from interfering with working in the garden, it is better to cover the container. The finished solution will become dark in color. Add 1 liter of infusion to a bucket of water.

Warning! The proportion must be maintained so as not to burn the leaves.

Fertilizing garlic with chicken manure in the spring accelerates plant growth.

Yeast feeding

Food for spicy vegetables can be made from wet or dry yeast. The main thing is not to overdo it, otherwise the effect may be negative.

Yeast (10 g), sugar (5-6 large spoons), chicken manure (0.5 kg), wood ash (0.5 kg) are added to a ten-liter container. Fermentation lasts no more than two hours. The resulting composition is added one liter per ten-liter bucket and watered under the root.

Attention! It is not necessary to add chicken manure and ash.

Let's sum it up

Caring for garlic plantings is not that difficult. Of course, beginning gardeners will have to work hard and study useful materials. The main thing is to remember that you need to comply with agrotechnical standards.

Feeding plants during the growing season should be not just the norm, but a responsibility for gardeners. Only in this case can you get large heads of the spicy vegetable.
