Eggplant Ilya Muromets

Eggplants attract gardeners with their delicious taste and the ability to diversify the winter table with home-made canned delights. Plants with a long growing season manage to ripen in a short summer even in the northern regions with the use of coverings under film or in stationary greenhouses. Eggplant Ilya Muromets is one of the popular varieties of the Gavrish seed company.

Description of the heroic variety

Eggplant Ilya Muromets

Mid-season eggplant variety Ilya Muromets for growing in open ground and under film reaches technical ripeness in 110–115 days after full germination.

Attention! Seeds for seedlings are sown in the third ten days of February. Eggplant seedlings grow slowly. Formed bushes are planted on the site in May, when the weather stabilizes and the night temperature exceeds +15 degrees.

In the southern regions, eggplants of the Ilya Muromets variety are cultivated in open ground, in the central and northern regions - under film cover and in greenhouses. Film tunnels are preferable: heat-loving eggplants overheat in the greenhouse on hot days and can lose their ovary and color.

The variety lives up to the name Ilya Muromets: the bush reaches a height of 1 m, branched, dense, powerful. The deep dark purple fruits are striking in size - irregular spindle-shaped cylinders with a diameter of 10 cm and up to 40 cm in length, weighing more than half a kilogram. The yield of the variety exceeds 10 kg/m2. Favorable reviews contribute to the spread of the Ilya Muromets eggplant variety.

Agricultural technology for cultivating the variety

In two and a half months of active growth of eggplant seedlings of the high-yielding variety Ilya Muromets, the plant acquires 5–7 true leaves and a branched root system. Picking, if necessary, is carried out until the plant has lost its cotyledon leaves. If it is possible to do without transplants that are traumatic for the roots, immediately plant the germinated eggplant seeds in large pots.

Eggplant Ilya Muromets

A medium-sized eggplant of the Ilya Muromets variety is planted in fertilized soil. The holes are filled in advance with compost or humus and filled to the brim with water. After repeated moisture-recharging watering, we plant the seedlings with a lump of earth in the slurry, deepen the root collar by 1–2 cm. The roots are not injured during such planting, the survival rate of plants is 100%.

We mulch the top of the hole with a 2 cm layer of dry humus. The moisture does not evaporate and a crust does not form on the soil surface. After 2 days, we rake the mulch and carry out loosening - gardeners call this operation dry watering. After loosening, the mulch returns to its original place. The air has access to the roots of the plant; the capillaries through which moisture evaporates are broken. The roots do not dry out. In hot weather, eggplant seedlings are shaded, but given plenty of sunlight in the morning and evening.

After planting, the shoots and lower leaves up to the first fork are removed. So, a bush is formed so that every plant and leaf gets enough sun. With the appearance of the ovaries, another removal operation is necessary. 5–7 large fruit ovaries are left on the bush. Others are removed, including flowers. This is a necessary measure: the eggplant of the Ilya Muromets variety is a large-fruited plant, if you do not lighten the bush, the ripening of the fruits will extend until cold weather. The fruits are crushed.

Vera Tsikunova, 43 years old, Saratov
If the soil is not just fertile, but oily, eggplants of the Ilya Muromets variety grow by leaps and bounds. I now apply manure to the soil in the fall, fertilizing with a thick infusion of bird droppings or cow dung, and deep loosening not only for one crop. The bush produces up to 5 kg of fruit. The variety is thermophilic, but heat depresses it. In autumn it stays young.
Turysheva Larisa Nikolaevna, 56 years old, Serov, Sverdlovsk region.
Under film in the northern Urals, eggplants of the Ilya Muromets variety ripen in open ground under film. I sow the seedlings in peat tablets, but do not plant them. I start harvesting in mid-August. The real Ilya Muromets is not afraid of short-term cold snaps. It is surprising that the giant fruit produces a pinch of seeds.
