Rowan Kene is a miniature tree used in landscape design. In nature, rowan with white fruits is found in the central and western regions of China, sometimes it can be seen in Russia and the Far East.
Description of Rowan Kene
Rowan of this variety in nature grows up to 3-4 m in height, and cultivated seedlings do not exceed 2 m. The crown of the tree is spreading, with openwork foliage. The main difference between the Kene rowan and the ordinary one is the color of the ripened fruits.
The bunches of the common rowan have an orange-red hue, while the berries of the Quene variety (pictured) acquire a creamy white color.
The shape of the clusters and berries is the same as that of the mountain ash. The perianths on the white background of the berries look like black dots, so the berries resemble beads. The berries are not poisonous, but have a bitter-sour taste; birds readily feast on them.
Approximate flowering time is May, June. The flowers are white, collected in corymbose-shaped inflorescences. The diameter of the inflorescences is about 10 cm in diameter.
The bark of the trunk is brownish-red. The length of the foliage reaches 25 cm, which is much longer than the length of the leaves of the mountain ash; the structure of the leaf plates is similar.The color of the foliage changes depending on the season. In summer the crown is covered with emerald green leaves, and in autumn they turn purple.
Pros and cons of the variety
Considering the positive qualities of Kene mountain ash, it should be noted:
- decorative appearance;
- compactness and small height;
- undemanding to soil composition.
The variety tolerates planting in polluted industrial regions, so it is suitable for urban landscaping.
The disadvantages of this variety include the following:
- the possibility of freezing of flower buds, which leads to the absence of flowers and fruits;
- seedlings of this variety are light-loving, so planting with tall trees is not recommended.
Planting and caring for Kene rowan
In order for the Kene mountain ash to delight with its decorative qualities, it is necessary not only to purchase a viable seedling, but also to correctly select and prepare a planting site, as well as care for the crop.
Preparing the landing site
Kene rowan is not recommended to be planted in damp lowlands. Its root system may suffer from close groundwater. There should be no tall trees within a diameter of 5 m from the seedling. In the shade from other crops, rowan will stop forming and may not bloom.
A good place for planting is southern or western areas; you can choose the upper part of the slopes or flat areas. When planting mountain ash, the upper third of slopes has advantages over other areas. There's a lot of sun there, and the cold air goes down, so the trees don't freeze. The slopes protect the seedlings from the north wind. Snow accumulates on sloping areas and does not melt for a long time in the spring, protecting trees from returning frosts.
Landing rules
Kene rowan feels best in fertile, well-drained soils.
Average hole dimensions: 50x50 cm. If laying a drainage layer is required, then the depth of the hole is increased to 70-80 cm. The following components must be added to the planting hole:
- turf soil - 3 parts;
- humus – 2 hours;
- sand – 2 hours
If the purchased seedling has an open root system, it is replanted in the fall or early spring. Autumn planting in September-October is preferable to spring planting. If the seedling has an earthen lump, it can be replanted at any time of the year (except winter).
Rowan Kene can be planted individually or en masse. In the second case, a distance of at least 4 m is left between the planting holes.
Watering and fertilizing
The frequency of watering an adult tree depends on the conditions of the region. In dry times, the amount of watering is increased (1-2 times a week); if it rains, additional moisture of the soil is not required.
To keep the root zone moist, the seedlings are watered regularly and the soil must be loosened. Loosening and mulching helps get rid of weeds. Peat, humus, compost or sawdust are used as mulch. The mulch layer should be at least 5 cm. 1-2 times a year, the mulch is dug up with soil, and a new layer is poured on top. This procedure is especially relevant before wintering.
In the third year after planting, seedlings need feeding. The most successful option for applying fertilizers:
- before flowering in the spring, use nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compositions (20-25-15 g, respectively) per 1 m² of tree trunk area;
- in summer, the amount of fertilizer is reduced.The nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium composition is added in the following ratio: 10-15-10 g;
- In autumn, nitrogen fertilizers are excluded from the composition of fertilizers, since they stimulate the growth of branches and do not allow the tree to prepare for winter. Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are taken in equal parts - 10 g per 1 m² of planting area.
Trimming
In spring, rowan bushes begin to grow very quickly, so it is important not to be late with pruning. The longest shoots are shortened, pruning is done to the outer bud. Fruiting shoots are shortened a little, and the crown must be thinned out.
If the mountain ash does not grow well, rejuvenating pruning is performed on 2-3 year old wood. This stimulates the formation of new shoots.
Preparing for winter
It is advisable to mulch young seedlings of the white-fruited variety for the winter. A layer of mulch will protect the root system from freezing. In central Russia, an adult Kene mountain ash is able to overwinter without shelter; it is not frosts that are scary for it, but wet and windy weather in winter. If the flower buds of a crop freeze, it quickly recovers, but does not bloom or bear fruit this season.
Pollination
It is advisable to plant white-fruited varieties at a distance of 4-5 m from each other; in addition, to obtain a high yield, gardeners recommend planting several varieties at once. Single trees are self-fertile, but their yield is less than in mass plantings of different varieties.
Harvesting
The harvest hangs on the branches of rowan even after frost. Birds feast on the berries, but the harvest can also be harvested by humans.To prevent the berries from becoming bitter, harvest after the first frost. If the berries are collected before frost, they must be sorted, removing leaves and stalks, then left in the air to wilt and dry. Fresh fruits can be stored in the freezer.
Due to the strong bitterness, the fruits of the Quene variety are not recommended for consumption.
Diseases and pests
The main pests of Kene rowan are:
- aphid;
- rowan moth;
- spider mites.
The most common disease is rust, which can destroy a seedling if a person does not take any action to combat the disease.
To combat insect pests, insecticides are used, and to prevent and prevent diseases, they are sprayed with copper-containing products.
Reproduction
Propagation of this variety of rowan can be carried out using several methods:
- seeds. Planting material must be stratified or sown before winter;
- cuttings. The method is considered effective because the percentage of rooting even without the use of chemicals is about 60;
- vaccination can be used Common rowan is suitable as a rootstock.
Conclusion
Rowan Kene is a white-fruited variety, characterized by its small height and beautiful appearance. Mature trees of this variety are unpretentious and do not require special care. White-fruited mountain ash is used for landscaping city parks and squares, and can be planted in a private courtyard.
Reviews of Rowan Ken
I decided to make a hedge at my dacha. I chose Kene rowan seedlings for landscaping. I really liked her look.The white berries with black tail dots, reminiscent of beads, seemed especially unusual. I planted it alternating with rowan bushes.
I watered the seedlings, mulched the tree trunk circle, I can’t note any other difficulties with care. The variety is unusual, so it attracts attention. The hedge turned out very beautiful. The combination of white and orange fruits is eye-catching.
I work as a landscape designer. People like unusual ideas and new varieties. I started offering Kena rowan; customers like its appearance, small size and undemanding nature in terms of growing conditions.
Kene rowan can be planted against the background of coniferous seedlings (pines, spruces, fir). Shrubs are also combined with deciduous trees (linden, black poplar, white willow).
If the area is small, Kene rowan can be planted in a single copy.
