Replanting honeysuckle: autumn, spring and summer

You can replant honeysuckle at any age, but it is better to choose a favorable season when the plant is dormant. When moving, the bush is divided or transferred to a new area as a whole. They pay special attention to proper care of the plant, since survival rate depends on it.

After transplanting adult honeysuckle bushes, fruits can be obtained as early as next year if the main agrotechnical conditions are met.

When can you replant honeysuckle bushes?

Honeysuckle is an unpretentious plant. Replanting can be tolerated at almost any stage of development, and if agrotechnical conditions are met, throughout the entire warm season: early spring, summer, autumn. Each transplant period has its own characteristics, which are carefully studied. Development and fruiting depend on compliance with the requirements.

The autumn period is considered especially favorable for transplanting an adult honeysuckle bush, when the plant has already entered the dormant phase. In spring, it is not recommended to move the crop due to the early start of the growing season; the bush blooms dormant buds at the slightest warming.

Honeysuckle is transplanted for the following reasons:

  • the bush has developed and become spreading;
  • inhibits neighboring plants that are more valuable to the gardener;
  • tall trees began to shade the honeysuckle, and the crop bears fruit well only with sufficient sunlight.

Is it possible to replant honeysuckle during flowering?

Experienced gardeners advise not to replant old honeysuckle bushes during flowering. The procedure has a bad effect on survival rate and subsequent fruiting for 1-2 years. It is better to move honeysuckle before the buds begin to swell, as soon as it is possible to work in the garden after the snow melts.

Is it possible to divide a honeysuckle bush for replanting?

Often honeysuckle grows in the form of a tree with one trunk, and then division is impossible. But if several shoots emerge from the fibrous root, new seedlings are obtained. The root ball is cut with a sharp, disinfected shovel, and the shoots are transplanted separately.

The cuttings are treated with a disinfectant and fungicide.

The root system of honeysuckle is densely fibrous, superficial, located in a soil layer up to 15-25 cm deep. In favorable conditions, the bush quickly takes root in a new place.

Important! If the roots are weak, the trunk is cut to a stump; after the root system has taken root, it will certainly produce new shoots.

How to dig up honeysuckle for replanting

When transplanting an adult bush, carefully inspect the crown of the honeysuckle, remove old, broken and thickening branches that grow inward. The crop is not pruned until it is 5-6 years old. Before moving, water thoroughly 1-2 days before the procedure so that the soil is not hard, but slightly moist, and the root ball is tightly connected to the surrounding soil.

The roots of honeysuckle are superficial, not single, but with numerous small shoots, which it is advisable not to damage and preserve:

  • bushes are dug up from all sides, retreating from the trunk by 40-50 cm, to a depth of 30 cm;
  • then dig under the center of the root ball;
  • lift and remove along with the soil onto a previously prepared thick film or fabric;
  • do not shake off the soil from under the roots, trying to preserve the lump in order to less disturb the small root shoots;
  • The honeysuckle is dragged or transferred and carefully placed in a prepared planting hole.

When replanting honeysuckle, concentrate on carefully digging up and carefully moving the plant. After transshipment, possible remnants of root shoots in the same place under favorable conditions grow into full-fledged seedlings the next year.

The preserved roots and above-ground parts tolerate movement painlessly

How to transplant a honeysuckle bush to another place

Before transplanting the shrub, find a place that meets all agrotechnical requirements:

  • a bright, well-lit area;
  • there are no drafts or sharp gusts of wind;
  • the soil may be low-lying, but not swampy, because excess moisture leads to rotting of the roots;
  • the soil is light in structure, with low acidity;
  • the distance to neighboring bushes is 1.5-2 m.

Currants, mock orange, and lilacs are considered good neighbors for the crop; their thick foliage protects honeysuckle from strong winds. A prerequisite for productivity is planting 3-6 or more seedlings of different varieties to ensure effective cross-pollination.

When transplanting an adult honeysuckle bush, the conditions for development are improved - they are moved into a hole that is larger in volume than the previous one. When filling the planting site with substrate, make sure that the soil is loose, with a large proportion of sand, to which peat, humus and garden soil are also added in equal proportions.

Prepare a hole for honeysuckle according to the same requirements for all seasonal replanting periods:

  • dig a hole in 7-10 days to a depth of 30-40 cm, width 45-50 cm, along the width of the bush for replanting;
  • lay a drainage layer 10-12 cm thick;
  • mix the necessary components of the substrate, according to the soil on the site, adding humus or compost;
  • enrich the soil in the hole with 3-4 tbsp. l. superphosphate, 2 tbsp. l. potassium sulfate, 1 tbsp. l. ammonium nitrate;
  • if the soil is acidic, lime the substrate - add 200-400 g of dolomite flour or slaked lime.

When transplanting, the root collar of the honeysuckle should be at the same level as before, above the garden soil. The plant is watered with 1-2 buckets of water, depending on the size of the root system. The tree trunk circle is mulched with straw, hay, peat, and humus.

Comment! Some gardeners recommend that before transplanting honeysuckle, mark one of the sides of the plant, for example, the south, in order to also plant the shrub in a new place. It is claimed that the technique helps restore yields immediately next year.

How to transplant honeysuckle to a new place in spring

Honeysuckle is transplanted in the spring only if absolutely necessary. Carefully dig up an earthen ball with the root system, if possible without damaging it, and transfer it to the nearest planting site. It is not recommended to transport bare-rooted seedlings over long distances. Most often, such plants lag behind in development. If wintering is successful, honeysuckle will begin to grow within a year.

The buds of the culture begin to awaken very early, as early as March.

There are varieties with a late start to the growing season and, accordingly, late fruiting, which can be moved in the spring. Most common varieties of honeysuckle bloom already in April, just in time for gardening. From the video it is clear how to properly transplant honeysuckle in the spring:

How to transplant honeysuckle to another place in the summer

The berries on the bush ripen early - in June. And after harvesting, a more successful transplant is possible if the roots are carefully dug up. Early varieties of honeysuckle are easy to replant in August, because shoot growth in the crop stops already in July. Before transplanting, remove dry and broken shoots and branches. Young seedlings from containers tolerate summer replanting without problems.

For plants moved in summer, it is important to create the most convenient conditions:

  • shading on hot August days;
  • regular abundant watering;
  • mulching the tree trunk circle.

How to properly transplant honeysuckle in the fall

The crop is often replanted from the end of summer, when shoot growth stops and a period of calm begins. The timing of transplanting honeysuckle in the fall differs depending on the geographical climate:

  • in most central regions and weather similar to them - from late August to mid-October;
  • in the south - until mid-November;
  • in the northern regions - until mid-September.

With timely autumn transplantation of honeysuckle, the shrub has time to take root in the days remaining before frost.

Rules for caring for a transplanted honeysuckle bush

It is important not only to preserve the roots and select a suitable site, but also to subsequently care for the shrub. There are also features of agricultural technology depending on the growing region:

  • in areas with long warm autumns, varieties with a long dormant period are selected so that the buds do not bloom already in November or during winter thaws after early autumn transplantation;
  • in the South Ural region with high summer temperatures, it is recommended to transplant honeysuckle into partial shade and abundant watering in June, during the ripening phase of the berries, as well as mandatory mulching of the tree trunk to protect the surface root system from overheating;
  • It is recommended to replant honeysuckle in Siberia mainly in autumn or with abundant watering in spring and early summer;
  • in regions with harsh, long winters and a short warm period, you cannot add nitrogen preparations to the planting hole or feed the plants with them during the second half of summer.

After transplantation, plants are watered abundantly, but rarely; in the middle zone, 2-3 times per season is enough, especially during the ripening phase of the berries. For each bush give 10-15 liters, taking into account the size of the plant. Watering in the south is carried out regularly throughout the growing season, during the ripening of berries up to 2 times a week, 15 liters per plant. And in the fall, in the middle, end of September or October, depending on the climate, they do moisture recharging by simultaneously pouring up to 30 liters of water under the bush. The slightly dried soil is loosened so that a crust does not form and oxygen penetrates to the roots.Weed shallowly due to shallow roots.

The crop is fed once every 3-4 years with organic or mineral preparations for berry bushes. In April, fertilizers are simply placed on the snow in the tree trunk circle. They begin to prune the branches 5 years after transplanting the honeysuckle. Young shoots are not removed because they are fruitful.

When replanting, take into account that there should be 4-5 different varieties nearby for good yield.

Advice from experienced gardeners

Work with honeysuckle on replanting and care is carried out based on knowledge of the characteristics of the shrub:

  • buds on the plant awaken at + 3 °C, and flowering begins at + 9 °C;
  • growth occurs in April and early May;
  • flower buds of the future harvest are created at the end of May;
  • berries are formed on last year's shoots, so rare pruning is done very carefully, removing only damaged branches;
  • on young branches 15-25 cm long, from 18 to 45 fruits are set, and on old branches the fruiting shoots are short, up to 5 cm with 2-4 berries.

Conclusion

Replanting honeysuckle is not difficult, because a well-preserved fibrous root system easily takes root. It is more important to choose a suitable site and properly care for the plant.
